He was born January 28, 1910 in Milwaukee to the late Frank and Elizabeth Kandler Kraus. Gilbert was employed at Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee for many years as a millwright. He and his wife Dorothy moved to Mountain following retirement in 1969. Gilbert enjoyed walking in the woods, feeding the deer, and truly loved the outdoors. He was a member of St. Mary's of the Lakes Catholic Church in Lakewood. Dorothy preceded him in death July 27, 1975.
Survivors include his two sons and their families, Robert (Lynn) Kraus of Mountain, Dave (Susan) Kraus of Verona, WI; his brother, Joseph Kraus of Waukesha; three grandchildren Zae, Abby, and Molly.
Gilbert was also preceded in death by his two brothers, George and John and five sisters, Anne, Catherine, Betty, Jean, and Marie. Friends called at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lakewood Wednesday May 12, 1999 from 10:30 a.m. until Funeral Mass 11 a.m. with Father Gerald Schmidt officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Gruetzinacher Funeral Home in Suring was in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established- at Woodland Village Nursing Home in Suring in memory of Gilbert.
