Gordon Irvin Frees

Mr. Gordon Irvin Frees, 119 Memorial Drive, Oconto, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2000 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Plover, Wisconsin on June 26, 1921. In his youth, he was involved with the Civilian Conservation Corps Reforestation program and planted many pine trees throughout Wisconsin, some of which we now know as the Machickanee Forest. Gordon was an officer in the Army Airforce in World War II and was an accomplished pilot. During the war he was involved in the African Conflict, then later transferred to the British Isles where he met his war-bride, Phyllis Scott Frees who preceded him in death on November 22, 1999. They were happily married for 55 years.

Gordon was the Chief of Police in Omro and also served as Commander of the Foreign Legion there. He spent his retirement years in Oconto and enjoyed his hobbies of writing fiction, carpentry and woodworking. Gordon was a volunteer for the Theater group Machickanee Players and helped design and build a beautiful set, for the play 'Later Life' that will be remembered, for years to come. He was a published author and enjoyed writing fiction and was working on his audio books prior to his death. Gordon had three daughters, Cynthia Frees Demske and her husband Jim Demske of Plano, Texas, Tammy Frees and her fiance Joe Noel of Oconto and Sylvia Frees Raymond who preceded him in death on December 24, 1988. He has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister Doris Dodd of Janesville.

Relatives and Friends will be received at First American Lutheran Church, 511 Madison Street, Oconto from 1 until 2 pm Saturday January 6, 2001 at which time a Funeral Service will be held. Interment at Fort Howard Memorial Park, Green Bay.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund has been established.
