She was born Nov. 12, 1918, in Brazeau, Wis., the daughter of the late Gust and Emily (Cudnofsky) White. She grew up and attended school in the Pound, Wis., area. She moved to Iron County as a young lady, first living in Gibbs City and then Iron River. Frances worked as a bookkeeper and cook in local lumber camps and then moved to Milwaukee for a short time. She returned to Iron River and was employed as a sales clerk and bookkeeper at the former Kroma€™s Department Store and at the former J.J. Newberry Store for 24 years. She owned and operated a restaurant, Frana€™s Snack Shop in Caspian, for a short time and then worked at the F.W. Means Co. She also helped at the St. Vincent De Paul Store in Iron River.
In her younger years she helped with the local 4-H program. She also enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Smitham; an infant sister, Laura; a very special nephew, Larry Smitham; and an infant brother.
She is survived by a son, Jerry (Sherry) White of Caspian; two grandchildren, Jamison and Melissa White; a very special niece, Ginger (Clayton) LaBine of West Bend, Wis.; a brother, Walter (Ella) White of Tipler, Wis.; and their children, Linda, Betty, Tommy, Jeanie, Mary Lou, Gary, and Kevin; and a niece, Suzanne Smitham Ginter.
Friends may call Sunday, Feb. 18, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Langenberg Funeral Home - Stambaugh Chapel. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Howard Martis, pastor of the Maple Grove Baptist Church in Tipler, will officiate. Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery.
