The deceased was born in the East Indies, of English and
Irish parentage, but in his early youth accompanied his step father, Mr.
P. Guck to this city, and here he resided until his 15th year when he went
to Philadelphia, where he entered a printing office and served and apprenticeship
of three years. He afterwards spent a year or two in traveling through
a portion of the southern states, and in 1875 returned to this city and
for 2 years was foreman of the Reporter office. At the close of 1877 he
went to Chicago and secured “cases” in the Times office, where he remained
until 1881, when he returned to this city and commenced the publication
of the Enquirer, and was editor and proprietor of that newspaper up to
the time of his death. Mr. Sharp was an ardent and consistent Democrat,
and in the last general election gave a hearty support to the ticket nominated
by his party, and for his efficient services was rewarded by being appointed
postmaster in this city in April 1886, which position he held for nearly
a year when failing health compelled him to resign the arduous duties connected
with the office. He has been a victim of that dread disease, consumption,
for five years past, and though he took the utmost care of himself,
yet he has gradually yielded his vitality to the fell destroyer, and last
Thursday passed peacefully away, surrounded by loving relatives and
sympathetic friends. Mr. Sharp leaves a wife and two young children to
mourn his early death. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Sunday) from
St. Joseph’sR.C.Church.
