Eugene T. Lyons

Eugene T. Lyons, 76, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who served as a
medical historian and then was a government management consultant, died
of cancer February 7 at his home in Columbia, Mo. He considered
Lakewood, Wi. his part-time home.
Col. Lyons was born in Chicago. He received bachelor's degrees in
English and military history from the University of Maryland. He served
during World War II and was posted to Alaska during the Korean War. In
the early 1960s, he administered a field hospital in Germany. He retired
as a medical historian at the Forest Glen Annex of Walter Reed Army
Medical Center. His main assignment there was to write about the wartime
work of the Army Medical Corps. Col. Lyons, also edited the post
newspaper and wrote a chronicle for the Army surgeon general on the
Vietnam War.
After he retired in 1967, he was a management analyst for
the District government, the federal Office of Management and Budget and
the Agriculture Department. Col. Lyons, who had a second home in
Lakewood, Wis, was president of the Retired Officers Association of
Washington. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Redeemer
Catholic Church in College park, St. Louis Catholic Church in
Clarksville, Clarksville Lions Club and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Lou Lyons of Columbia and
Lakewood; three children, Kathleen Galante of Columbia, Daniel C. Lyons
of Frederick, Md., and Charlotte Blazel of San Rafael, Ca.; two
brothers, two sisters, and five grandchildren.
