Last Rites Are Held For Mrs. John Cross
Oconto Falls, Wis.-Funeral rites were conducted by the Rev. John P. Simon of
the Methodist church on Saturday afternoon for Mrs. John Cross, the former
Evelyn Rice, who died at her home in Milwaukee, on Jan 16th at the age of 56.
Mrs. Aaron Rudolph presided at the organ and Mrs. James Schaub, soloist,
sang "In the Garden" and "abide With Me". The services, held in the John
Crooks Funeral Home, were largely attended. Interment took place in the Volk
Family cemetery with six nephews carrying the casket to its resting place.
They were Maynard, Merle and Lyle Rice, Howard Lucas and Orville and Roy
Grinebeler of Milwaukee. Mrs. Charles Angus and Yarwood Mateavers were in
charge of the flowers.
Mrs. Cross was born in Oconto Falls on Dec. 5th 1895, the daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Rice, had spent the major portion of her life in
this community. She attended the local schools and took the teacher training
course at Marinette. After teaching for a while, she was married to Mr.
Cross. The couple lived for a time at Lakewood, and also for a few years in
Oconto. About a year and a half ago, they moved to Milwaukee.
Survivors are her husband, three daughters, Olive, Mrs. Kenneth Rugg of
Lakewood, Marie, Mrs. Marie Franks of Oconto and Betty, Mrs. Francis
Greenwood of Madison, and one son, John, Jr. who is serving with the Airborne
Troops stationed at Pine Camp, New York. She is further survived (Turn to
