Mrs. Denis (Dorothy Richter) O'Malley, 66, 2914 Hwy 41-141, Abrams, died Friday, January 15, 1999 at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born June 21, 1932 in Oconto to the late Emil and Aurelia (Bourassa) Richter. In 1951 she graduated from Kaukauna High School. In 1962, she graduated from Georgetown School of Nursing in Washington, D.C. Dorothy also held a Bachelor of Art degree in Christian Counceling and a Master's of Phychology degree.
Dorothy and Denis O'Malley were married on November 30, 1963 in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. She and Denis moved to Abrams, WI in 1964 and operated O'Malley's Mini Mart for 37 years. Dorothy was a journalist and photographer. For 20 years, she wrote "Top of the Morning" for the Oconto Falls Times Herald. She also wrote articles for the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the Wanderer and the Oconto Reporter.
Dorothy was a member of the Latin Mass Association of Green Bay and sang in the church choir. Dorothy held the fight of the unborn dear to her heart and was an avid foe of abortion. She was a member of Birthright. In May of 1978 she formed the Shield of Roses. She marched and prayed weekly in silent protest. She started the A&A Alexandrina Pregnancy Center in Green Bay. Mrs. O'Malley was a member of Pioneer Total Abstinence Association.She was in the United States Army Reserve-WAC and was also in the singing group, The Angels, in Green Bay.
She is survived by her husband Denis; one daughter and son-in-law, Maura and Jarlath Harkin, Suamico; one grandson, Colin Patrick Harkin; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Joyce Richter, Oconto; one sister and brother-in-law, Karen Rose and William O'Sullivan, Grafton. Dorothy leaves behind many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Jim Keenan and Vaughan Rose.
Friends called at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., Green Bay from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 1999. The Rosary was recited. Further visitation was held at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Monday. A prayer service was held Monday at 9:50 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a funeral procession to St. Joseph Chapel on the Green Bay Catholic Diocesan Grounds. A Requiem Mass in the Traditional Latin Rite was held at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Joseph Chapel with the Rev. Gregory Micula from the Institute of Christ the King officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick Church Cemetery in Stiles.
