Heart Attack is Fatal to Former Fire Chief

Charles Phillips, 61, former city fire chief, succumbed to a heart attack Saturday evening, at his home at 207 Scherer-Ave. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3:30 PM from the Gallagher funeral home with Rev. Fr. John Hilton officiating. Pallbearers were Joseph Minarik, Sr. J.K. Karban, Joseph Dedds, Louis Grunert, Charles Grunert and Charles Blucher. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Francis Hoppe, Mrs. Gladys Weigelt, Doris Strom and Lillian Fields. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery.

The deceased was born February 27, 1879 in Winterburn, Pa., and came to Oconto with his parents at the age of three. He has resided in the city since that time. He was married in 1907 to Minnie Goodchild in Oconto. He served on the city fire department for many years, and on the retirement of chief Bert Harris served as fire chief until his own retirement in 1935. He was a member of Company M of the Wisconsin National Guard.

Survivors are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Strom and Mrs. Joseph Macos of Oconto, and Hele Mae, at home; two sons, Leonard, of Oconto, and Jackie at home, ten grandchildren and one brother, William of Oconto.

Those who attended the funeral from out of town were: Mr and Mrs Willard Rost and Mrs. Bertha Rost of Coleman; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rost, Little Suamico, Mrs. Tena Swaer, R. G. Swaer, Oak Orchard, Wm. Swaer and Lester Rost of Garden , Mich.; Mrs. Nellie Swaer, Pensaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Goodchild, Mr. and Mrs Frank Goodchild of Laona; Mrs. Daniel Wicker, Sr. and daughter and husband, and Mrs. Daniel Wicker Jr., and Mrs Ida Krueger, all of Green Bay; John Moynihan and Mr. and Mrs. James Moynihan of Oconto, Mr. and Mrs. William Moynihan of Brookside; and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Makos of Klondike.
