OLD RESIDENTS OF COUNTY PASS AWAY THIS WEEK
Frank Whiting, 83
Mr. Whiting was born in Boston, Mass. in 1851 and came to Wisconsin with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Whiting at the age of two years. The family settled a tract of wild land in the town of Oconto at about where Cream City now stands. At that time it wa a wilderness and not having a road on which to travel the only way they could reach the city of Oconto was to blaze a trail from their farm to Couillardville and then follow the river into town.
Frank Whiting helped to build the first bridge across Little River in the town of Oconto on the road between Oconto and Lena, going through Louisville. He helped to organize the first school district in the northwestern part of the town of Oconto, and built the first schoolhouse there. The district took in some of the territory in Little River, making it a joint school district. He was school officer and held the chairmanship of the town of Oconto for several years. While serving on the county board he was appointed to several important committees.
Mr. Whiting was married to Julia Ordway, who preceded him in death several years ago. Of his immediate family only one brother remains to mourn his demise, seven sons; Charles, Frank, Albert, Fred, William, Louis, and Jacob, having died before him. No daughters were born to the union.
He was buried from the Oconto Presbyterian church Sunday with Rev. Starr Lloyd officiating at the funeral services. Six nephews acted as pallbearers. Two other nephews who were honorary pallbearers, took charge of the flowers. Interment was made in the Evergreen cemetery.
