Clyde E. Whiting Killed in Accident Near Stiles Jct.
Collision Claims Life of One, Injures Five on Highway 22 Sunday;
Funeral Services Held Tuesday
Clyde E. Whiting; 26 son of Mrs. Norbert Polhana of Oconto was killed instantly when his car a 1932 Chevrolet sideswiped another car driven by Clarence Bannon, 32 of Stiles, approximately one-half mile east of the junction of highways 22 and 141. The accident occurred at 3:20 Sunday morning when Mr. Whiting, driving south on a town road, swung east onto highway 22 crashing in to the Bannon car which was going west. The Whiting car, following the collision veered, across the road into the southwest ditch and rolled over on its side. The Bannon car, a 1929 Oldsmobile sedan, rolled over on its side from the impact but remained on the highway.
Passengers in the Bannon car were Dayton Wuaterbath, 20, Stiles, who suffered minor lacerations to his face and forehead; Ivis Ward, 19, Stiles, and David Truckey 32, Stiles, both suffered similar lacerations; Charles Huisman, 57, Stiles, who had multiple cuts and bruises and Betty Mineau, 19, Oconto, who suffered multiple cuts and bruises on her legs. The later two were pinned under the overturned vehicle. They were all taken to the Oconto Falls hospital for treatment all, with the exception of Miss Mineau, were released that same morning.
The accident was investigated by Sheriff Foral and Deputy Sheriff Frank Lingelback. Mr. Whiting was taken to the Gallagher funeral home where a coroners jury viewed the body at 11:15 Sunday morning. The jury was composed of Dewey Rosenfeldt, Xavier Suprice, Harley Grandall, Kenneth Bostedt, Joseph Chatel and Xavier barribeau, and no definite date for the inquest has been set.
The deceased was born August 16, 1915 in Oconto and has resided here all of his life. Funeral services were held at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church with Rev. Thomas Smart officiating at the ceremony. Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery. Gallagher funeral home had charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Norbert Polhans, Oconto; his widow, Mamie, 234 Michigan Ave., Oconto; two sons Roger and Wayne; three brothers, Leslie of Green Bay; Harry and Delbert of Oconto; and four sisters, Mrs. Alfred Bitters, Town of Oconto, Mrs Harry Exferd , Mrs Alice Bellow and Mrs. Louis Belongia, all of Oconto.
Pallbearers were Burton Bitters, Junior Whiting, Lyle Bitters, Milton Exferd, Vernon Whiting and Calvin Bitters. Flower Girls were Verne Whiting, Joyce Bellow, Doris Whiting, Carmen Belongia and Clarice Whiting.
