A solemn requiem high mass was held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in St Charles Catholic church with the Rev. J.A. Labno as celebrant. The Rev. Leo Przybylski of Spruce and Rev. Kenneth Rogers of Manitowoc assisted. Interment was in the Lena Catholic cemetery. A rosary was recited in the Steffen funeral home by the Holy Name society, Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus, of which he was an active member. All village business places were closed Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Born in Horst, Holland, on February 19, 1870, he served in the Holland army from May, 1890, to September 1891. He came to De Pere with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mathey, in 1892. In a ceremony there in April 1896, he married the former Petronella Arts and later moved to Trenary, Mich., where he was employed by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron company. He later transferred to Trenary, Mich., where he was a timekeeper, he then opened a general store.
On January 20, 1908, Mr. Mathey came to Lena and purchased the Sly Duquaine store which he had operated for 40 years. In 1916 the store was remodeled. His wife died in 1912 and in 1913 he married Mrs. Anna Whelan, who died in 1941.
Mr. Mathey was active in civic and religious organizations. He was president of the Holy Name society from its inception until a year ago, was a charter member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, having been a member of Oconto council for 25 years. He was on the village board for many years.
Surviving him are three children, Peter, John, and Mrs. Rynold Rosera, all of Lena; two brothers, Peter of Sarasota, Fla., Martin of Sturgeon Bay; one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Caron of West Winfield, N.Y. and five grandchildren.
