GREEN BAY -Alvin L. "Al" Schmoniak , 78, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at a Green Bay hospital.

He was born on May 13, 1922 in Oconto, to the late Herman and Josephine (Chezek) Schmoniak. Al served in the United States Army during World War 11, and participated in the D-Day, Invasion. Following the war, he married Dorothy Modrow in Oconto on February 4, 1946. They later moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked for the Pentagon in their intelligence division. In 1951, Al and his family moved to Green Bay where he worked as a foreman, for Green Bay Drop Forge. He was known through-out the company as "Mr. Drop Forge". Al was a dedicated member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars De Pere Post #2133, and actively participated in the VFW Color Guard for parades and many other functions of the association. For the last 15 years, Al was president and treasurer of the Site Council for Meals on Wheels at Mason Manor Retirement Community. Before his wife's passing, Al, and Dorothy were active members of First Assembly of God Church, especially with the churches bus ministry. Al, was known for his gift of woodworking and he enjoyed making and building things for his family and friends. He and Dorothy enjoyed fishing together with their friends.

Al is survived by his children and their spouses: Sherry and special friend Ed Waldron, both of Green Bay; Sandy and Larry Steininger, of Green Bay; his grahdchildren: Justin Waldron, Lesley Waldron, Larry "Nick" Steininger, Mothers Steininger and Mike Steininger, all of Green Bay; his sister Lucille Thomas of Eau Claire; and his, special friends; Vera O'Donnell of Howard, Larry Propson and Wayne VanderMissen both of Green Bay.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy; his parents; and his brother-in-law Tommy Thomas. The funeral was held Saturday, Januaury 27 at Bayside Christian Fellowship Church, Green Bay with the Rev. Arni Jacobson officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto. Arrangements through Blaney Funeral Home, Green Bay.
