Alfred "Alfie" A. Strei, 86, Gillett, died peacefully at his lifelong
home on April 19, 2004, with family by his side. Alfred was born to the
late William and Olga (Deering) Strei on May 5, 1917, in the home in
which he lived his entire life. On June 2, 1945, he married Clarice
Heier, Oconto, who preceded him in death on Sept. 4, 2002. In addition
to farming until his retirement, he was also an avid woodworker who
built, refinished and remodeled thousands of projects from toys to
birdhouses to cabinetry. All of these items were painted, varnished and
otherwise finished by his wife, Clarice, who kept a meticulous record of
everything they ever created. Alfred and Clarice were longtime 4-H
leaders and gave freely of their time and talent to the young people who
loved working in Alfie’s workshop. Alfred was a lifelong member of
Christ Lutheran Church in Hintz, where he was baptized and confirmed. He
was the youngest of seven children, all of whom preceded him in death,
Walter, Art, Raymond, Emma (Clemonts), Helen (Behm) and Alma (Fischer).
An infant daughter, Mary, also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, Wayne Strei, Gillett; along with numerous
nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2004, at 2 p.m. at
Christ Lutheran Church in Hintz with Deacon Michael Zamzow officiating.
Friends may call at the church from 12 noon until the time of the
services. Interment will be in the Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Zastrow Funeral Home in Cecil assisted in the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers and other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund
has been established.
The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Sarnwick and the staff of
Shawano Medical Center for their kindness and compassion. The care and
concern given to Alfie and his loved ones during this time was greatly
appreciated.
