note: The area of the cemetery was visited regularly to service settlers and
Native Americans by Revs. John C. Perodin, then pastor at Fond du Lac, Father
Bonduel of Green Bay and B. De Goey of Duck Creek, as early as 1848,
although burials were known to have taken place earlier. A small church was
first built near to the cemetery under the direction of Rev. A. M. Jos.
Mazeaud in 1865 as the first Catholic Parish in Marinette. Over the years,
the congregation was under a long series of short-term pastors. Starting in
1889 and going through 1892, the French members of the congregation withdrew
to begin their own parish in Marinette, followed four years later by the
Polish members of the congregation, leaving a greatly diminished number of
families to support the parish, rectory, church building, large elementary
and regional high schools, and convent for the teaching sisters of Notre
Dame. The parish was incorporated into St. Mary's for a time and
re-established later, again as Our Lady of Lourdes. Source "The
Catholic Church in Wisconsin" published October 6,
1896.)
MARINETTE COUNTY
CITY OF MARINETTE
CALVERY CEMETERY - OUR
LADY OF LOURDES
Calvary cemetery, is
located on Pierce Avenue in the City of Marinette. It is between Cleveland
and University Avenues about a quarter of a mile south of Woodlawn
Cemetery. The Cemetery was established by the old Our Lady of Lourdes
Congregation. Title later passed to the Marinette Catholic Central High
School, when the new Our Lady of Lourdes was created. The school had
insufficient funds to maintain the cemetery, and the cemetery deteriorated.
In 1980, the Marinette Cemetery Board
contacted the Green Bay diocese, regarding this unfortunate situation. A
proposal was drawn up to allow the Marinette Board to accept responsibility
to provide maintenance to the cemetery. This did not allow for the
prevention of the deterioration of the markers, and age and weatherization
soon got the best of these memorials. The cemetery was in such poor
condition that it was impossible to determine the exact location of all
markers to the proper grave. Therefore the markers and the graves may no
longer match.
Records
state that Calvary did not open until 1 September 1891. However, burials are
recorded as far back as 1881 (History
of the area has burials going back at least to the 1840's).
The last burials occurred in the 1920's.
As new cemeteries opened families had loved ones transferred. Records were
not kept of the number of who was transferred; the records that are
available list some persons in two or three different burial grounds. It
is thought that the last property purchased is the final resting place. In
some of these cases, old markers were cast aside and new memorial purchased
to conform to the rules and regulations governing the new site.
