September 1937 Oconto Falls—Mrs. Spice is the former Jeanette
K. Janssen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Janssen of Mather street,
was married Monday in the Sacred Heart church in Sherwood. Mr. and
Mrs. Spice will make their home in Oconto Falls.
1937 Oconto Falls—A
ceremony which united two popular young people in marriage was performed
by the Rev. David Johnson at the Methodist Episcopal parsonage, Oconto
Falls, at four Saturday afternoon. The principals were Miss Arvilla
Bartz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bartz, of Mountain, and Robert Johnson,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson, Oconto Falls.
1937 Oconto Falls—Having served a recreation director
of Oconto county under the state WPA recreation program since November
21, 1935, Mr. Byron S. Foster left Oconto Falls in which his office has
been situated, yesterday to take over his duties as assistant in charge
of training in the Milwaukee office of James W. Crossett, zone recreation
supervisor. He will be succeeded here by G.E. McDougal, who has been
a recreaton leader under Mr. Foster almost since the inauguration of the
program.
1937 Oconto Falls—Many honors have been conferred
during the last few years upon Miss Joyce and Robert Wright, daughter and
son of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Wright. Most recently, Miss Joyce, 18, won
a $ 700 music education scholarship at Cornell university, Ithica, N.Y.;
and Robert, a junior at Oconto Falls High School, won first place for the
second time at the state national forensic league tournament at Ripon in
non-humorous declamation, and is eligible to enter the national contest
in Iowa next week. Miss Wright is an honor graduate of Oconto Falls
High School with the class of 1937 and was director of the school band
and also drum major. Starting her musical career as drum major of
the kindergarten band at Lake Geneva, she entered concert band work in
third grade. In sixth grade she took up snare drumming, band bells
and tympani. She started playing the trombone in her sophomore year.
She was cheerleader of pep club for three years. Miss Wright was
prominent in other activities during her school career. She won a
great many forensic honors, entering the humorous declamatory contest all
four years of high school, winning each time, and representing the school
in sectional contests. In 1936 she was fourth in the national contest.
She received musical medals nine years straight and solo awards on snare
drum and trombone in six contests. Miss Wright was a member of the
all-state champion one-act play cast in 1936, attended all state band,
all state chorus meets in 1935, 1936, and had one of the leading parts
in the senior class play. She also was a member of the school notes
staff. Robert, who won the state non-humorous declamatory contest
this year, was winner last year in humorous declamation in the state and
has competed in one national contest. This year he can enter the
national contest in both non-humorous and humorous declamation. He
was a member of the debate team for two years and in 1936 was in the state
play, winning first place. In 1937 he took the lead in the state
contest play. Besides this he was a letterman on the football team
and king of the carnival.
1937 Funeral services for Betty, 7-year-old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. George Yong of Gillett, former
Falls residents, were held at St. Anthony's catholic church on Wednesday
morning with the interment in the local cemetery. Rev. F.J. Meldhiors
officiated at the Angle mass. The little girl had been in ill health
for some time, but she had been at the Oconto hospital for about ten days
previous to her heath there. Little Betty is survived by her parents
and several brothers and sisters.
1937 Oconto Falls—Mr. and Mrs. John Birr, who lived
in this community for over 50 years, are moving to Neenah where Mr. Birr
is employed as millwright for the Kimberly Clarke Paper Company.
Mr. Birr worked in the local paper mill for over 25 years as millwright
and at the time of the shutdown seven years ago was head millwright.
Since that time he has been in the employ of the Kimberly Clarke company.
Mr. and Mrs. Birr were married here 32 years ago by the Rev. H. Best.
They both have lived here all their lives. Mr. Birr is 55 and Mrs.
Birr, 52. They are the parents of seven children; Lawrence, Howard
and Myron, Oconto Falls; Mrs. Henry Radler and Miss Carlin Birr, Milwaudee;
Gaylor, Minocqua, and Mrs. Lawrence Leach, Ashland. Mr. Birr has
been a member of the Masonic order for over 15 years and is a member of
the independent Order of Odd Fellows. Mrs. Birr has been active in
civic as well as social affairs in the city. She has been vice oracle
and oracle of the R.N.A. Society, Treasurer at present in the G.A. R. society,
a member of the Eastern Star and has been one of the Star points.
A member of the Oconto Falls Woman’s Cub, a member of the Foreign Missionary
society of the M.E. Church and the Ladies Aid.
