Oconto Falls
—
Mr. and Mrs. John Burgois announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Gloria and Kenneth Naniot, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Naniot, all of Oconto Falls.  The ceremony will take place at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at eight o’clock Saturday morning, February 7th.  The Rev. Francis Francart officiating.

Oconto Falls — The thirty-fifth and the ninth wedding anniversaries of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Coopman and their son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gustaveson of Wausaukee were celebrated here on Thursday evening of the last week.  The happy date is June 17th.  A delicious dinner was served, the decorations on the table being two lovely bride’s cakes.  Besides the Gustavesons and the Coopmans, guests included Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Hicks and family of Gillett and Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Vincent and son of Denmark.  Oconto Falls friends join the Herald in Extending best wishes for many more anniversaries to the Coopmans and the Gustavesons.

Oconto Falls — J.P. Anderson, who is leaving the teaching staff of the high school, Mr. and Mrs. Goerke and Mr. and Mrs. Spears, newly married members of the faculty, were honored at the first social meeting of the Oconto Falls Teachers association in the high school Monday evening.  Bridge was played, with prizes going to Mr. Wright and Miss Goggins, followed by refreshments.  Four wedding cakes, baked by the school home economics classes, were served with ice cream and cake.  Superintendent Richter gave a short talk on Mr. Anderson's Work during his nine years as member of the school faculty and conveyed the congratulations and good wishes of the association to the newly married faculty members and their wives.  The party closed with the singing of “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Goodnight Ladies,” led by Mr. Wright.  Mr. Kjer, president, was in charge of the program, assisted by Misses Tucker, Flowers and Beck.

The info  on Attic Treasures page (above) refers to my Mother and dad...Mabel (Bostwick) and Cliff Goerke. I would guess the article was from about 1935-6. They later taught in the Waukesha School system, where my dad retired as principal 1972. I cannot remember who the folks were that my Mom roomed with,  she always spoke with great affection of her friends in Oconto Falls.

Oconto Falls—Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wolfe announce the engagement of their daughter, Janice, to Harold Aprill, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Aprill.

Oconto Falls—Miss Mary LeComte repeated nuptial vows with Dean Magnin Saturday morning, June 4th at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.  The Reverend Joseph Tomczyk was the officiating clergyman.

Oconto Falls — With 317 votes being polled, one of the largest numbers ever recorded here, Mayer E.J. Shellman was re-elected for his third consecutive tem with 521 votes, over 271 polled by Emil Plain.  A close race was run for clerk, with A.W. Johnston, the incumbent, coming out ahead of his opponent, P.H. Sharp, by votes of 413 to 373.  Mrs. Lydia Sladkey was reelected treasurer without opposition, and Paul Gauthier was reelected assessor without opposition.  In the first ward, William Davis, the incumbent, defeated Yarward Matravers, in a close race for supervisor, winning by two votes, 102 to 100.  A.B.Metzler was reelected supervisor in the second ward over W.J. Kadlec, getting 151 votes to the later’s 36.  W.A. Flatley, was reelected supervisor of the third ward, with 177 votes as compared with Art Desremaux’s 161 votes.

Chase — Pink and white majestic daisies decorated the altars of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chase on Saturday, May 21 for the marriage of Miss Marion Rose Valentine, Abrams, and Mr. Louis Peter Stepien of Sobieski.  The Rev. Father L. Lisowski officiated at the 10 am ceremony.  Miss Bernadete Rosera, Lena, was the organist while students and friends of the bride sang the nuptial high mass.  Miss Carolyn Blaser, Milwaukee, Sang Schubert’s Ave Maria.  Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Roland Valentine of Abrams and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Stepien of Sobieski.

Oconto Falls — According to word received this week from Oconto Falls high school officials, Judy Porter, high school senior, was given the American Legion School award.  This award is presented by the Oconto County Council of the American Legion.  The selection is made by the faculty.  The award is given to a student displaying high qualities of honor, courage, scholarship, leadership and service.  All qualities that are necessary for good citizenship.  This is the first year that this award has been given at Oconto Falls high school.  Judy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Porter of Oconto Falls.  She has been very active in school activities, being a cheerleader for four years, co-captain her final year; a class officer for three years, a majorette in the band, and an officer in both the GRA and the dramatic and forensic club.

Augusta—Mrs. Myrtle Leigh, 74, Augusta, died Saturday at her home.  The former Myrtle Kieffer was born September 8, 1892.  She was well known in the Oconto County area as teacher and supervisor of teachers.  She is survived by her husband, Klyke, formerly of Oconto; two sons, William, Madison; Richard, Miami, Florida; one daughter, Mrs. Neva Bell, Madison; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Marcouiller, De Pere.  Funeral 2 pm Tuesday, Methodist Church, Augusta.  Burial 1 pm Wednesday, Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto.

Oconto Falls—Mrs. John J. Cross, was elected and installed president of the Oconto Falls Parent-teachers association at a meeting held recently at the Washington school.  The PTA will continue to sponsor and support the Boy, Girl and Cub Scout movement in Oconto Falls, and the school safety patrol as in the past, it was decided.  The program was arranged for and presented by C.E. Wright, local music instructor.  The next meeting will be Tuesday evening, Dec. 10, at the Jefferson School.  All parents and teachers are urged to attend.
 Oconto Falls — Mrs. D.J. McIlree, who observed her birthday and who is also leaving for an extended visit in California Tuesday, was a guest of honor at a supper party Thursday evening.  Hostesses were Mrs. E.M. Ama, at whose home the party was held, and Mrs. Rex McKeever.

Gillett — Adolph I. Winther, at present the assistant principal and social science instructor in the high school, won the election of county superintendent of schools with a majority of over 1500 votes over the incumbent, S. V. Wilson.  Mr. Winther won in all but five precincts to pile up his large vote.  The village of Gillett alone gave him a vote of almost ten to one when Mr. Winther received 370 votes to 38 for his opponents.  He will take office the first Monday in July.  Mr. Winther has taught in the Gillett schools since 1930.  He is a graduate of Augsburg college in Minneapolis and has attended summer sessions of the University of Wisconsin graduate school for the past four years.  He has also spent one year at the University of California in Los Angeles.  He has held the position of athletic director in the high school since coming here and has coached the football, basketball and baseball teams.  He is a member of the Gillett Lions club and Phi Delta Kappa, national educational fraternity.

Oconto Falls — Twin sons were born to Attorney and Mrs. Howard N. Lehner at Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay on Saturday, May 6th.  This date is also the mother’s birthday.  The Lehners’s have a daughter, Barbara, who will be three in June.  This means there are two more potential lawyers in the firm of Lehner and Lehner.  The boys have been named David Nelson and Richard James.
Oconto Falls — Changes in administrative assignments made necessary by war conditions were announced recently be M.E. Skinner, Vice-president of the Buffalo, Niagara and Eastern Power corporation.  With the departure of Mah. Walter S. Schmidt for service with the Army Ordance department the appliance and lighting businesses are being merged for the duration under the direction of Howard M. Sharp, son of Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Sharp, Oconto Falls.  Nationally known in the lighting field, Mr. Sharp is first vice-president of the illuminating engineering society, a member of the British Illuminatin Engineering society and is the author of a number of papers dealing with fundamental principles of lighting application; radiant heat and light; light and air conditioning.  Mr. Sharp’s design method for floodlighting buildings and plant properties is being extensively used by industry in many parts of the country.  He is chairman of the Lighting Advisory Committee of the Erie County War Council, a patrol officer with the Coast Guard Auxiliary and a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Power Squadron.  The Sharps have another son who is a sergeant with the R.A.F.


Oconto Falls — Mr. And Mrs. Ben Saecker and son Don of Beloit were over night guests at the R.M. Putnam home Monday.  Mrs. Saecker and Mrs. Putnam are sisters and Mr. Saecker will be remembered by many as he was at one time employed in Oconto Falls.

Oconto Falls — Miss Arvilla Spitzer, who had been a guest at the A. A. Rudolphhome for the past two months, has returned to her home in Green Bay.

William E. Flatley came to Oconto Falls, Wisconsin about 1847.  Mr. Flatley came to Green Bay, Wisconsin with his cousins from County Slig O Ireland.  The cousins remained in Green Bay and surrounding area.  Mr. Flatley went on to Oconto Falls, Wisconsin as the opportunity offered in cutting timers brought him there.

A hand written partial history of the Delano Family:

327 years.  Laura DeLano family of Oconto Falls, Wis.  Phillip DeLano came to American from the Netherlands on the ship Fortune at the age of 19.  In 1634, he married Hester Dewsbury.  Their 7th child was Jonnathan DeLano, who married in 1687 Mercy Warren, a grand daughter of Richard Warren and Elizabeth Jeweth, who both came to American on the Mayflower in 1620.  Jonnathan DeLano’s 2nd child was names Jonnathan DeLano Jr. born in 1670.  He married Amy Hatch in 1704.  The 11th child of Jonnathan DeLano Jr. and Amy Hatch was Thomas DeLano Jr. who was married in 1747 to Louise ?  Their 6th child, Thomas DeLano Jr. was born in 1760 and in 1883 married Olive Gruswalk.  Thomas and Olive’s 5th child, Leonard was born in 1792 and married in 1822 to Mersilvia Piper.  The 4th child of Leonard and Mersilvia was born June 5th, 1826 and was named Marcus Doty DeLano.  Marcus Doty DeLano married Jeanette Sutton in Watertown (Waltertown) N.Y. and soon thereafter moved to Brookside, Oconto, County.  To this marriage was born three daughters, Jeanette, Hattie and Laura.  Laura, the youngest was born December 25, 1859 and married July 8, 1885 to George W. Volk of Oconto Falls, Wis.  George and Laura Volk had four children, Mark, Lenora, Raymond and Vivian (Mrs. Albert Swain)  who now live in California (1948).  Laura DeLano Volk was a descendent of the second son of Jonnathan DeLano, Jonnathan Delano Jr.  President Franklin DeLano Roosevelt was a descendent of another son of Jonnathan DeLano.

Oconto Falls—Bride-to-Be—Mr. And Mrs. William Strei, Oconto Falls, announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Bertha Strei, to Stanley Staffeld, Neenah.  The marriage will take place November 1, at the St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church.  The Rev. Arlen Adams will officiate.

Mr. And Mrs. Floyd Lane and daughters, Paula and Barbara, of Wauwatosa are enjoying a two weeks vacation at the home of Mrs. Anna Lane.  Mrs. Lane had spent the early part of the summer in Milwaukee; Miss Lorraine Toepfer of Wauwatosa is enjoying her vacation with the Lanes.

Oconto Falls—Mr. and Mrs. Russell Putnam, Oconto Falls, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary here Friday, featuring a dinner in the Methodist church parlors at 5 o’clock in the evening.  Open house will be in order at their home Sunday afternoon and evening.

The Putnams have lived in Oconto Falls nearly 45 years.  Mr. Putnam was born in De Pere.  His wife is the former Ida White of Menominee, Michigan.  They have a daughter, Mrs. George (Helen) Jaster of Carey, Ohio, and two sons, Marvin, of West Bend, Wis. And Kendall, Oconto Falls.  There also are seven grandchildren.

After having worked in the paper mill here for many years, Mr. Putnam is now the head of an insurance agency.  Both he and his wife have been active in church, civic and fraternal affairs.

Some miscellaneous information about Oconto Falls as taken from an article published in a local paper because someone sent a copy of the Oconto Falls High School yearbook to a TV station in Green Bay.  The information is as follows:  The year is 1907.  Eighth graders include such names as Bertha Wittmann, Vivian Raymond, and Ruth Volk, Frances Henry, Annie Carroll, Nellie Clapp, Albert Jelinski.  The year book contains photos of the old West Side School, Now the Jefferson school, and the old Lincoln school, hidden in what is now the Parish hall and part of St. Anthony’s school.  Coach of the football team was Dr. W.F. Goddard.  The girl’s basketball team consisted of Amelia Pfiffer, Della Wagner, Emma Patterson, Josephine Salchert and Pauline Ohswaldt.  Other photos in this first annual include the pine grove on the west side, small trees then, a view of the Falls and the old bridge—and the rapids below the Falls, a view of part of Main Street, McCune Block with the school in the background, four churches, the Methodist, Zion Lutheran, St. Jacobs, (now Grace Lutheran) and St. Anthon’s Church and Rectory.  Advertisements which helped finance the printing of the book were the State Bank, George Fye, Jeweler; P.H. Sharp, drugs; Peterson Bros. Hardware; Charles D. Wilson, the double front store; Dr. W. F. Goddard, dentist; E. J. Marcouillier, Optometrist; Falls Manufacturing Co., makers of sure fiber and manila papers; Hotel Saunders; M.C. Schaal, livery stable; R.F. Volk, Hardware; J.C. Meyer, City Barber Shop; Wm. Lemorande, Bus, Dray and Baggage Line; R.F. Birr’s City Meat Market; Falls Mercantile Co.; F. J. Kilmer, Retailer of Hardware; and R.F. Birr, photographer.  The year book was published by, Oscar Schaal, Florence Fitzgerald, Zoella Perrigo, Richard Kaufmann, Morris Baughn, Cecelia Gallagher, Joseph Baughn, Edna Elliott and Harry Elliott.

Oconto Falls—The Sullivan-Wallen unit of the American Legion auxiliary entertained three state officers at luncheon Saturday noon.  The luncheon was in connection with the auxiliary’s mid-winter conference.  Present are; Miss Violet Kvaley, Pulaski; Mrs. E.J. Shellman; Mrs. M.K. Elbertson, chairman of the state rehabilitation committee; Mrs. Louis Bandelin, State president, and Mrs. Harry Hass, State Secretary-treasurer.

Oconto Falls—One of the prettiest weddings of the season in St. Anthony’s church too place this morning at 9 am when Miss Winifred Munsert, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Munsert of this city became the bride of Julius Neveu of Coleman.  The Rev. F. J. Melchiors performed the ceremony.  The bride was attended by Miss Marian Lemorande and Miss Delores Metzler.  Raymond Brooks and Frank Meleski were the bridegroom’s attendants.

Oconto Falls—Charles Coopman, who has been a barber here for 43 years, sold his business this week to John Kempka of Milwaukee and expects to retire and live in his home on the corner of Calwell and Adams Streets.  Mr. Coopman worked as a barber at Oconto and Peshtigo before coming to Oconto Falls, in 1903 to open his place of business where he continued until the time of the sale.  He was born on a farm in Brown county December 20, 1875 and many years ago came with his parents to this community and settled on a farm.  He was a charter member of the fire department and had been a member for 40 years before resigning last year.  He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Oconto Falls—The Oconto Falls Real Estate agency began business here in 1902 under the management of Joseph Volk.  They have several hundred village lots for sale, and also village residences and farms.  All parties contemplating purchasing any kind of property in this section would find it to their advantage to address the manager, Joseph Volk, and make known their wants.

Oconto Falls—Next Thursday evening, April 30, the Oconto Falls FFA and FHA will hold their annual banquet in honor of the parents in the high school cafeteria at 7:30 pm.  Miss Connie Lutz, Alice in Dairyland Princess, will be the guest speaker.  She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lutz of Oconto Falls.  At the present time she is attending the University of Wisconsin where she is majoring in home economics.  She is in the following organizations on campus; University Dorm Council, Associate Women Student and Big Sister program for the coming year.  The following committees have been named; The general chairmen are Karen Peters, FHA, and Duane Peterson, FFA; program chairman, Jim Nemecek; food chairman, Eugene Peterson; award chairman, Bob Rathsack; ticket chairman, Curt Johnson; door prize chairman, Wilfred Peterson; invitation chairman, Bill Kamke and Clair Westcott; entertainment chairman, Kathryn Zima; serving committee, Mary Konop, and decoration committee, Marjorie Koehne.  The FFA awards will be presented by Mr. Peter Schroch and Mr. Charles Saloutos, their advisors.  The following people will receive the Honorary Chapter Farmers degrees; Wilfred Peterson, Sr., Earl Peterson and Bill Schnese.  Judy Marks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marks, will receive the Chapter Sweetheart award from the FFA.

Oconto Falls—December 6.  For the third successive year a brother and sister starred in the annual Dramatic club play, the most pretentious dramatic event of the year in Oconto Falls High School.  Two years ago Harold Bohcall and Ethelyne Bohcall were uncle and niece.  Lat year the brother and sister played husband and wife and tonight they were called on to enact the roles of brother and sister.  In each of their three appearances they have played opposite each other.  The play tonight, which a capacity house praised as a finished performance, was “Second Childhood.”  Harold played the part of Dr. Relyea and Ethelyne played the sister, Mrs. Weissmiller.  Harold and Ethelyne were members of the cast that last year won second place in the state dramatic contest.  Each has been a member of the school’s debating team and last year Ethelyne won state honors in decimation.  Both are honor students.  Harold is a senior and his sister is a junior.  Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bohcall.  Earl S. Kjer is director of dramatics in Oconto Falls High School.

Oconto Falls—The Oconto Falls High School senior class play, “Yours Truly Willie,” to be produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, May 10, has action and comedy enough to satisfy any audience with much of the comical antics being supplied by Robert Wright as Willie and his ingénue leading lady Elizabeth Rusch.  The rest of the cast includes Joseph Porter, Gladys Black, Eugene Behling, Rachel Carrol, Betty Jane Surber, Bernard Matravers, Harold Smith, Walter Spiegel, Mae Titel, Monica Titel and Eileen Rusch.  Assisting the director, Miss Margaret Hecht, is Clara Mae Netzer and on the production staff is Royal Miller, David Gibson, Glen Thielke, Joseph Makoski, Lillie Lavine, Violet Babka and Floyd Peterson.

Oconto Falls—James Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Peterson of Oconto Falls, has been chosen king by the basketball team for the formal holiday dance to be held in the high school gymnasium Monday evening.  He has selected Rosemary Martin of Little Suamico to be his queen.  Invitations have been extended to neighboring schools to have a basketball player and a girl of his choice to make up the court of honor.  It is expected that Lena, Oconto, Gillett, Coleman, Bonduel, Suring and Pulaski will send representatives. Bob Lindsay, Oconto, and Bruce Stengel, of Suring High School, already have accepted the invitation.  There are conflicting dates, which will prevent some of the neighboring schools to participate. Bobby Hughes and his orchestra will play for the dancing.

Gillett—Frank Meunier and Norman Sylvester, students at St. Norbert college, West De Pere, are spending the holidays with relatives here.  Harvey Wetzel, a commercial student at the Whitewater State Teachers’ college, is spending the Christmas holidays at his home here.  Wallace Zill, who is attending Miss Brown’s School of Business, Milwaukee, and Miss Mary Miller, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I.H. Miller, who is attending the State Teachers College in Oshkosh, also are home for the holidays.

Oconto Falls—Filling a vacancy caused by the resignation of Mrs. Starr H. Lloyd, who moved Thursday to her new home in Indiana, Mrs. I.J. Shellman of Oconto Falls has assumed the duties of acting president of the Eighth District Parent-Teachers Association.  Mrs. Shellman is president of the Jefferson school PTA at Oconto Falls, and has served as second vice-president and as first vice-president of the district organization for the past year.

Lena—A birthday baby is this week’s Citizen of Tomorrow.  She is Laurie Ann Fetterly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Fetterly, Lena, R. 3. Laurie Ann was 1 year old on July 16th.

Oconto Falls—Sworn in Saturday morning, as Temporary Postmaster of the Oconto Falls Post Office is Henry Murphy.  Mr. Murphy was sworn in by W. H. McGuill, district Postal Inspector from Green Bay.  Mr. Murphy was appointed temporary by the Executive Board of the Democratic Party to fill the vacancy left by Gregory Flatley’s resignation.

Oconto Falls—“You are the first to wear a Memorial poppy this year”, said tiny Ila Mac Brehner, the youngest member of the Eick-Sankey unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, to Mrs. R. J. Goggins, past president and now the eldest member.  This opened the annual poppy program in Oconto Falls.

Oconto Falls—The study club leaders of St. Anthony’s are, Mrs. George Konitzer, Deanery Chairman, Mrs. Wm. Herman of Coleman; Mrs. Joseph Lotter, Mrs. Roger Knope and Mrs. Robert Skarban, Mrs. Marie Maclean, Mrs. Wm. Presl, the Rev. James Geenen of Stiles, the Rev. Joseph Tomczyk of St. Anthony’s, Mrs. Kenneth Benson, Mrs. G.B. Lane and Mrs. Leo Lotter.
