Charles F. Lancaster 1868-1922

Darlington Democrat, Thursday, November 23, 1922

OBITUARY:

Charles Francis Lancaster was born in the town of Argyle, July 1st, 1868, and died at his home in Lamont, Nov. 15, 1922, at the age of 54 years, 4 months and 15 days.

He was united in marriage to Mary Collins, May 9, 1894, who after sharing the journey of life with him for more than 28 years, is now left to finish that journey alone.

He grew to manhood on the old home farm on which he was born, attending the district school in which he proved to be above the average in mental capacity, and although necessity of the times all too soon, robbed him of this opportunity, he was well informed and kept abreast of the times.

Nature endowed him with a splendid physique and being industrious and impelled by a resolute nature, he was carried beyond the point of physical endurance and four years ago suffered a nervous breakdown which, at that time, nearly cost him his life, and from which he never recovered.

He performed each and every obligation to the letter and required the same in return.  He was frugal in habit and together with a frugal wife, accumulated a competence.  He was active in the whole life of the community and an impetuous booster, but in all his association with his fellowmen, wished only to play the role of a commoner.

He was a character that could not be swerved from the path of honor and duty—one that builds and maintains a nation.  The respect in which he was held was shown last Saturday afternoon when an immense concourse of neighbors and friends gathered at the home to pay their last tribute of respect.

The funeral services were in charge of the Rev. T. N. Watters, the Rev. J. A. Vincent assisting.  The casket was covered with beautiful floral wreaths, mute, yet eloquent emblems of love.  Six of the deceased’s nephews were Pallbearers and the remains were interred in the cemetery on the farm, amid many manifestations of profound sorrow.

Mr. Lancaster is survived by his heart-broken wife, his aged mother, four brothers and two sisters, namely:  Thomas of Darlington township; James, John and Frank of Lamont; Mrs. Charles Osterday of Lamont; and Mrs. Ole Johnson, of Wiota, besides other distantly connected relatives and a host of friends.
