ZAMUDIO, Jose F., age 52, of 7342 Enterprise Rd. Ferndale, passed away at home, Sat., July 25, 1987. He was born in Sinaloa, Mexico, Dec. 16, 1934. He was a Whatcom County resident since 1973, prior to that, lived in Arizona. He belonged to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Lodge in Lynden, a member of the Pinnochle Club of the Camel's Club of Lynden, an avid pool & state player, worked for the Meridian School District for 10 years. ZAMZOW, Laura passed away following surgery for a broken hip at the hospital in Newberg, Oregon on December 5, 2004. Born Laura Elizabeth Main to David and Ruth Lippy Main in Lyon County, Kansas on November 19, 1909, she moved to Whatcom County with her family when she was three. She graduated from Nooksack High School in 1927 where she first met her husband, Arthur Zamzow. They were married January 6, 1938 and resided in Bellingham until 19559 when they moved to Coos Bay, Oregon. He preceded her in death and for the past three years she has lived at a care facility in Lake Oswego, Oregon. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Michael Frison, and her grandson, Thomas Frison, all of Tualatin, Oregon. Her remains have been laid to rest at Nooksack Cemetery.
ZANDER, Almer Delos - Visitation for Almer Delos Zander Jr. of Bellingham will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Greenacres Funeral Home near Ferndale. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by burial at Greenacres Memorial Park. Mr. Zander died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at St. Francis Extended Health Care. He was 99. Born Nov. 24, 1901, to Rosa (Mezera) and Almer Delos Zander Sr. in Phoenix, he moved to Whatcom County in 1907 when he was 6 years old. In 1921, he graduated from Harmony High School, where he pitched for the high school team. During the 1920s, he played forward on the Brown & Cole basketball team, which won the Bellingham city championship in 1922-23. During his early years, he mowed hay, hauled gravel with a team of horses and wagon and worked in various lumber mills in Bellingham. He later worked for a poultry farm in Point Roberts and a chicken hatchery on Vashon Island. He also felled trees and delivered wood to local school districts. In the 1940s, he worked for the state highway department and then drove a milk truck. On Sept. 24, 1932, he married Lucy Theodosia Harrison in Mount Vernon. She died in 1987. In 1948, he and his brother Delbert operated a sawmill on Smith Road. He continued operation of the mill with his brother Oliver through the 1950s and into the 1960s. He also owned and operated a dairy farm and raised beef cattle for years, still carrying hay bales on his shoulder to his stock while in his late 80s. Mr. Zander was a lifelong Republican and served four terms as a precinct committeeman. He also was a member of Goshen Grange for many years. He loved to play pinochle and was an avid newspaper reader. His brothers Lawrence, Vernon, Arnold, Delbert and Donald Zander and sisters Florence Oliver, Inez Jones and Rosalie Harrison also died previously. Survivors include sons Al Zander of Bellingham, Ray Zander of Everson and Larry Zander of Toledo, Wash., daughter Laurel Melander of Aurora, Colo., sister Grace Harrison of Bellingham, brother Oliver Zander of Bellingham and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

ZANDER, Lucy T., 80, 1416 E. Smith Road, died Wednesday (March 11, 1987) in Bellingham. She was born March 15, 1906 in Birmingham, England, and immigrated to Whatcom County in 1920 with her mother, Marion Harrison, and four brothers. Mrs. Zander attended the old Whatcom High School and also Harmony High School near Bellingham, where she graduated in 1924. She graduated from the old Bellingham Normal School in 1927 with a teaching degree and taught school near Wibaux, Mont., and in Goshen. She married Almer Zander in 1932. Mrs. Zander was a member of the Goshen Grange and Victor Community Club and attended Victor Sunday School. Her four brothers, John, Esmond, Richard and Wilfred Harrison, died earlier. Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Raymond Zander of Lynden, Almer Zander Jr. of Bellingham and Larry Zander of Centralia; a daughter, Laurel Melander of Aurora, Colo; 13 grandchildren, seven nieces and five nephews. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. James R. Larson of the American Missionary Church officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Greenacres Funeral Home.

ZANDER, Oliver M., age 96, passed away at his home in Whatcom County on January 15, 2006. He was the last among 11 siblings. Oliver was born in Bellingham, WA, on November 29, 1909. His family had moved toWhatcom County in 1907 from Arizona and Nevada. He graduated from Harmony High School, near Bellingham. Oliver worked for a number of years sexing baby chicks for the poultry industry in California before returning to the family farm in Whatcom County. Oliver raised layer and fryer chickens, beef cattle, and hay on his farm for many years. He also helped a brother, Almer, operate a small sawmill in the 1950s and early 1960s. Oliver was a hardworking, honest, and generous man. He loved family gatherings, softball games, horseshoes, and pinochle. Oliver is remembered for his friendly nature and as having a ready smile and a chuckle. He was a past member of the Goshen Grange, Victor Community Club, and attended Victor Sunday School as a youth. He was also a long-time supporter of the Republican Party. Oliver was preceded in death by six brothers, Lawrence, Almer, Vernon, Arnold, Delbert and Donald; and four sisters, Florence, Inez, Rosalie, and Grace. Oliver is survived by one sister-in-law Verna Zander of Woodinville; 16 nieces and nephews, Betty Gatlin, John Oliver, Jack Jones and Lawrence Jones, all of Arizona, Vernon Zander of Georgia, Laurel Melander of Colorado, Delbert Zander, formerly of Walla Walla, Larry Zander of Toldeo, WA, Linnea Hirst of Seattle, Arnold Zander of Woodinville, Linda Roe and David Zander of Everett, Ray Zander of Everson, and Rosemary Crandall, Robert Keith and Almer Zander, all of Bellingham. ZARCHINSKI, Anna N. – A family memorials service for Anna Natalija (Sitko) Zarchinski of Bellingham will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Westford Funeral Home. Mrs. Zarchinski died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at Highland Convalescent Center. She was 73. Born July 16, 1927 to Thomas and Anastasia Sitko in Krakow, Poland, she grew up in Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1946. Survivors include son Conrad Icay of Bellingham; daughters Anna Marie Maxwell of Sumas and Victoria M. Zarchinski of Nampa, Idaho; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

ZAUCHNER, Joseph passed away in Bellingham on Saturday, March 5, 2005. He was born in Austria on August 6, 1909. Joe immigrated to Canada in 1928 where he developed a keen interest and ability in radio electronics during the 1930's and 1940's. Joe was self-taught. He later was hired as a technician for RCA in both radio and television. In the 1950's, Joe moved to the U.S. and became a citizen. He went to work for IBM, first as a technician and then as an engineer. While working at IBM, Joe met and married the love of his life, Anneliese. Joe was responsible for a number of IBM patents and retired as a Staff Engineer in 1977. Joe wanted to give back to the community and became involved with a number of organizations. These included the Audubon Society; The Whatcom County Library Board, where he served as a board member; The Master Gardeners; The Bellingham Fire Department, where Joe coordinated the Smoke Detectors for Seniors Program; and Sehome High School. Joe volunteered for 25 years in Science, Math, and Foreign Language at Sehome High School. He was key to the success Sehome students had in Robotics, Computer Design and Construction, and Electronics. Joe was a life member of IEEE, which published worldwide a paper he co-authored titled "Improving Science Education." He was recognized for his contributions in 1989 with the Award for Professional Excellence from Woodring College of Education, WWU. Joe not only gave generously of his time, but he and Anneliese donated their home to the Bellingham School District, and set up a Scholarship at Western Washington University to bring students from France, Germany, and Austria to study. Joe and Anneliese are members of the WWU President's Club. Joe is survived by his wife Anneliese; his stepson Hans Sommerlad; 2 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. ZEHNDER, Fred W., age 83, of 2401 D St., passed away Wed. Oct. 28, (1987) in a local hospital. He was a retired banker from Bellingham National Bank where he worked from 1925 to 1969, during that time was past member of Board of Directors and past president of the bank. He was a member of Bellingham Rotary Club; Yacht Club; Country Club and the Assumption Church. Survived by his wife Ruth; 3 sons, Neil of Bellevue, John of Pleasanton, Calif., Bill of Bellingham; 2 daughters, Maryanne Martin of Laguna Beach, CA, Candice Quick of Bellingham; 20 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Zehnder of Portland. ZENDER, Bernie J., passed away June 13, 2002 at his home in Kendall, WA. He was 78. Bee as he was called, lived all his life in Kendall. He was born May 14, 1924 in Bellingham, WA to Jacob J. and Mary Catherine (Shannon) Zender. He served in the U. S. Navy during WWII on the destroyer USS Saufly in the South Pacific. After the service, Bee played three years of professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He also played with the Bellingham Bells, Mt. Vernon Milkmaids and the Deming Loggers for many years. He was a great home run hitter and followed all sports. Bee was a partner in ZEE Logging and Trucking with his eight brothers and two brothers-in-law. He worked in the company 52 years before retiring in January 2000. Bee was a very strong member of the St. Peters Catholic Church and was very generous in many ways. Bee was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Catherine Zender; brothers, Nick, Jacob and Dan Zender. Survived by his brothers, Pete Zender and wife Ellyn of Bellingham, Dick Zender and wife Betty of Deming, John Zender and wife Celine of Welcome, Red Zender and wife Bev of Welcome, Jim Zender and wife Mary Ann of Bellingham; his sisters, Mary and husband Lee Williamson Sr. of Kendall, Kay and husband Dennis Cox of Bellingham; sisters-in-law Pearl Zender of Kendall, Lenore Zender of Lynden, Iris Zender of Kendall; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held noon to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at Westford Funeral Home. Prayer vigil will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 6210 Mt. ZETTLE, Gertrude, age 90, of Lynden, passed away Sat., Apr. 5, 2003, in Bellingham. She was born Nov. 5, 1912, in Lynden to John and Anna (DeJong) Bylsma, a lifetime resident of Whatcom County. She married Harry Zettle on June 22, 1937, in Lynden. Mrs. Zettle was an egg candler and homemaker. She loved dancing, cooking, fishing and volunteered for the Children&'s Orthopedic organization. Survived by her husband of 65 years, Harry Zettle two daughters, Roberta Feilen & husband Jae of Seattle and Ellen Amos & husband Harry of Bellingham three grandchildren three step-grandchildren four great-grandchildren three step-great-grandchildren brother, Dow Bylsma & wife Amy and sister, Bertha Rude. ZENDER, Henry Anthony, age 65, of Deming, passed away Sun., Sept. 15, 2002, in Deming. He was born Mar. 24, 1937 in Bellingham to Henry and Frances (Buckenmeyer) Zender and had been a lifetime Whatcom County resident. On June 1, 1957, he married Janice Barter in Bellingham. Mr. Zender retired from Zender Logging Inc., in 1995 after 40 years in logging. He loved playing with his ten grandchildren and his dog Timber as well as taking care of his lawn. He took great joy in logging, fishing and enjoyed sports on all levels. Mr. Zender co-founded Mt. Baker Little League and was a board member of Mt. Baker Water Assn. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus for several years. ZENTEFIS, Elsie May of 2139 King St. died Thursday, March 20, 1997. She was 65. A memorial service was held Monday at the family home. Born Dec. 7, 1931, to Albert and Minnie Pickle in Enterprise, Ore., she married John Zentefis on Dec. 14, 1948, in Bellingham. Mrs. Zentefis volunteered for the United Handicapped Organization and enjoyed gardening, bird watching, fishing and picnicking. She was preceded in death by brother Willard Pickle in 1945. ZETTLE, Mildred Jean, age 70, a life-long Lynden area resident went to be with the Lord at the Christian Health Care Center on Saturday, August 1, 1998. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Bob Cameron in Greenacres Chapel on Wednesday, August 5, at 2 p.m. Burial Will follow in Greenacres Memorial Park followed by a fellowship hour at the Laurel Community Baptist Church. The daughter of Arthur and Anna (Pearson) Jacobson, Mildred was born in Bellingham on February 20, 1928 and graduated from Lynden High School in 1946. She was married to her husband Robert E. Zettle of 51 years on November 29, 1946 at the Methodist Church in Lynden, shortly after his return from serving in World War II. She was a former member of the Lynden Order of Eastern Star Rainbow Girls, was a homemaker, and enjoyed dining out with her family and friends. She also attended the Laurel Community Baptist Church. She is survived at home by her husband Robert; daughter Karen and husband Larry Stahlecker and son Tony of Lynden; son Bud and wife Rose Zettle and son J. J. of Bremerton;
daughter Cindy and husband Lyle Leibrant and sons Andy and Cody of Laurel, and son Mike and wife Patsy Zettle and sons Shelby and Lucas and daughters Lexi and Samantha of Lynden; sister Nora Swietzer and husband Harold of Bellingham and brother Harold Jacobson of Auburn and numerous other relatives.

ZERZA, Joseph "Joe" John, age 98, of 2912 Meridian St, Bellingham, passed away Wed., Mar. 22, 1995, at Bayside Health and Rehabilitation Center. he was born May 28, 1896, in Austria to John and Anne Zerza and has been a Whatcom County resident since 1942. He married Margaret Bacus in Reno, NV in April 1940. Mr. Zerza belonged to the Bellingham Carpenter's Union #758. He retired as a livestock farmer after 36 years. He is survived by his wife Margaret, of the family home; one nephew; and 3 nieces. Visitation will be at Greenacres Funeral Home on Thurs, Mar. 23, 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Fri., Mar 24, 10 a.m. at Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Greenacres Memorial Park. ZETTLE, Robert E. "Bud", age 85, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Alderwood Park Convalescent Center. Born October 16, 1922 in Bellingham to Joseph and Bertha (Jones) Zettle, he lived his entire life in the Laurel area where he operated a poultry farm with his brother and father. He attended Meridian schools and served during WWII with the US Army's 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper in the Pacific Theater. On November 29, 1946 Bud married Mildred Jacobson in Lynden. For 13 years, he was employed by Temco at the ARCO refinery. A member of VFW Post #1585; Bud's favorite activities were family gatherings; dancing; taking care of his yard and camping. Preceded in death by his beloved wife Mildred in 1998; son, Bud in 2004 and daughter, Karen Stahlecker in 2007; he is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Lyle) Leibrant of Lynden and their children Andy and Cody (Tara) Leibrant; son, Mike (Patsy) Zettle of Lynden and their children Shelby, Lexi (Johnny) Brooks and their daughter, Jamie, Samantha and Luke Zettle; daughter-in-law, Rose Zettle of Bremerton and her son, Joseph (Rachel) Zettle and their daughter, Carissa; son-in-law, Larry Stahlecker of Lynden and his son, Tony Stahlecker and sons, Jaden and Breken; brother, Harry Zettle of Bellingham. ZERZA, Margaret M. - Visitation for Margaret M. (Bacus) Zerza of Bellingham will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Greenacres Funeral Home near Ferndale, followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel and burial in Greenacres Memorial Park. Mrs. Zerza died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 in Bellingham. She was 85. Born Dec. 23, 1915 to Lester and Helen (Baggs) Bacus in Vancouver, B.C., she lived in Whatcom County for 58 years. She married Joseph Zerza in Reno, Nev., on April 6, 1940. They ran a dairy farm on Hannegan Road from 1942 to 1978. An avid gardener, Mrs. Zerza supplied family and friends with vegetables and flowers. Her husband died March 22, 1995. Survivors include brother William Bacus of Kodiak, Alaska; sisters Leona Passinetti of Renton, Penny Sawyer of Roy, Utah, Kitty LaFreniere of Clearlake, Calif., and Leonora McCormick of Visalia, Calif.; and many nieces and nephew.

ZETTLE, May L., age 83, of 1603 E. Illinois, passed away Tuesday, March 12, (1974). Mrs. Zettle had resided in Whatcom County for many years and leaves to survive 1 son, Galen Prouty of Poulsbo. ZEUFELDT, Mildred J. - Private family services will be held for former Sunday school superintendent Mildred J. Zeufeldt, 79, Bellingham, with the Rev. Grant Whipple and Art Branson officiating. Mrs. Zeufeldt, 1860 Lakeside St., died Friday in Bellingham. Born Nov. 14, 1908 in Tacoma, she was a resident of Bellingham for 45 years. For seven years, she was the Sunday school superintendent at Geneva Community Church in Bellingham. Survivors include husband Sam Zeufeldt of the family home; two daughters, Gail Little and Susan E. Zeufeldt, both of Bellingham; two grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Greenacres Funeral Home.

ZEUFELDT, Sam, age 83, of Bellingham, passed away Wed, Oct. 6, 1993, at home. He was born June 20, 1910 in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, to George and Ida Zeufeldt and was a Whatcom County resident for 49 years. He was a 33rd Degree Mason in the Bellingham Bay Lodge #44 F & AM; a treasurer for Geneva Community Church; and retired from Sears after working there for 45 years. Mr. Zeufeldt married Mildred Mitchell on July 21, 1939, and she preceded him in Death July 29, 1988. He is survived by his daughters, Gail and husband Chris Little and Susan E. all of Bellingham; two grandsons, Tim and Pat Little of Bellingham; sister, Eileen Scott of Seattle; niece, Janet Mortensen of Denmark; and two nephews George and Fred Zeufeldt of Seattle. ZIEGLER, Edith V., age 72, 6125 Malloy Ave., Ferndale, passed away on Monday, Feb. 13, 1995 in Ferndale. She was born on Nov 28, 1922 in Appleton, MN to Ray and Thelma Lowry Wymore. After living in Seattle, she came to Whatcom County in 1952. She was a member of the United Church of Custer, Delta Grange, Ferndale Senior Center, American Legion Auxiliary, Ferndale Kulshan Post #154. She liked to sew, knit, crochet and she was an excellent cook. Edith's husband James David Ziegler died in Dec. 1989. She is survived by a son Kurt Ziegler and wife Lynette of Custer; 2 grandchildren, Michael Ziegler and Heather Ann Ziegler of Custer; 2 sisters, Geraldine Bierman of Langsford, ND, Betty Lou Shiener of Grand Forks, ND; brother Robert Warren Wymore of Mayville, ND. ZIEGLER, James D. - Services for James D. Ziegler, 71, 6125 Malloy Ave., Ferndale, will take place at 1 p.m. Monday at the Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Ziegler died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 1989) at a Ferndale nursing home. He was born Nov. 2, 1918 in Terre Haute, Ind., and moved to Whatcom County in 1950. Mr. Ziegler worked as a food service supervisor and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Kulshan Post, Ferndale; Delta Grange in Lynden; William Penn Lodge No. 272; F&AM Lodge of Terre Haute and F&AM Lodge No. 264, Ferndale; the Retail Clerk's Union Local No. 240, Bellingham; and Culinary Workers and Bartenders Union Local No. 451, Bellingham. Survivors include: his wife, Edith of the family home; a son, Kurt Ziegler of Custer; four sisters, Ruth Kimmel and Nell Felling of Terre Haute, Ind., May Southerland of Brazel, Ind., and Barbara Friedline of South Bend, Ind.; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. ZIELS, Amanda B., age 93, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2005 in Bellingham. The oldest of five children, Amanda was born in Kansas on January 28, 1912 to Joseph & Miriam (McPeak) Wallace. She moved at an early age to Nebraska with her family where she attended school and met her husband, Wilbur. She and Wilbur moved to Bellingham in 1942, and Amanda worked in retail sales for Horns Department Store, Victors Dress Store, Montgomery Wards, and Sears. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and Assumption Catholic Church. Amanda enjoyed bingo, camping, traveling to the ocean, spending time with her family, and going to breakfast at Denny's and ordering "The usual, with extra bacon." She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur Ziels in 1985; brothers Kenneth and Dale; and sisters Lucille and Letha. Amanda is survived by her son Larry Ziels and his wife Jan of Bellingham; daughter Joanne Grape and husband Wesley of Ramona, CA; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Thursday, March 31 from 12 - 5 p.m. A Rosary will be held at Assumption Church on Friday, April 1 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. A reception will follow at church in the gym. Interment will be at Greenacres Cemetery.

ZIELS, Wilbur, 75, 2404 McKenzie St, died Friday (June 14, (1985) in Bellingham. Born on Dec. 12, 1909, in Nebraska City, Neb., he moved to Bellingham in 1943 to work at Bellingham Shipyards. He also worked as a hardware salesman and as a bus driver for the city. He was a past president of the Bellingham Eagles Lodge and a past master of Demoley. Survivors include his wife, Amanda; one son, Larry Ziels of Bellingham; one daughter; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister. Christian prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Westford Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Greenacres Memorial Park.

She went to school in Einhout, Belgium. Maria married John A. Ziemba November 26, 1946. She has lived in Brussels, Belgium, March AFB Riverside, CA, Hamilton AFB San Rafael, CA, and Bellingham, WA. Maria enjoyed sewing, flowers and gardening. ZILINEK, Emma Jean, age 82 of Nooksack passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2009. She was born on
August 17, 1927 in Bellingham to June and Maybelle Stacey. E.J. earned her nursing certificate from Bellingham Technical School in 1968 and spent over 40 years working as an LPN at nursing homes all over Whatcom County. She also worked at the Lynden Community Center for many years, and volunteered at the Ferndale Senior Center, where she loved to garden. E.J. loved a good, strong cup of coffee, and her favorite times were those she spent with her family. E.J. was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughter, June (Tom) Yasuoka; sons, Milan (Cindy) and Joe (Joyce) Zilinek; grandchildren, Melissa, Teresa, Stacey, Kayley, Chrissy, Brian, Valerie, and Russell; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. ZIMMERMAN, Wesley, who died Tuesday (Nov. 6, 1923) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. N. Vanderpool, at Nookachamps, was laid to rest yesterday afternoon, after services were held in Aaron Light's mortuary. Wesley Zimmerman was born August 14, 1837, in Athens county, Ohio. He was one of the first to enlist when the civil war broke out, signing up with the company E volunteers at the age of 23. While still in the service he was united in marriage to Miss Mary McCain, of Freetown, Ind., on December 1, 1864. Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman came west and settled in Washington in 1903, and in September, 1906, Mrs. Zimmerman passed away. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Albert Paylor, Mrs. Floyd Brannon, Mrs. W. N. Vanderpool, all of Mount Vernon; W. M. Zimmerman of Seattle; P. H., of Collenville, Tex., and Mrs. N. J. Burgess, of Southerton Ark.

ZINN, Charles C., age 66, passed away at his Bellingham home on October 22, 2002. He was born on July 29, 1936 in Wellston, Ohio and moved to Bellingham in 1962. Uncle Gene enjoyed growing orchids, travelling to Hawaii, Oregon and around Washington State, life, people and being a mother hen to all his nieces and nephews. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. He was very much loved and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death earlier this year by his life long partner of 43 years, Edward Queener and his sister, Virginia Elsberry. He is survived by two brothers, Raymond Zinn of Bellingham and Robert Zinn of Marion, OH one sister, Carolyn Hamm of Marion, OH his two nieces, Jean Eastman and Marilyn Micona who cared for their Uncle Gene many nieces, nephews and friends. ZINN, Raymond Maxwell, passed away October 12, 2008. Raymond is survived by his ex-wife, Karen Zinn; sons, Raymond Zinn Jr., Tyson (Jeannette) Zinn; daughter, Chandra Dibily; grandchildren, Amanda Zinn, Jaden Zinn, Tamera Zinn, Sheena Point, Domingo Zinn Salas; niece, Jean Eastman, Marylin (Walter Jr.) Micona (Who was one of Big Rays closest friends); great niece, Lacy (Jason) Som; nephews, Danny Woods and Shane Micona and many dearly loved great-great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his loving mother Edna Jenkins; brother, Charles Curtis Zinn; sisters, Virginia Elsberry, Ann Elsasser and wife, Jeanette Zinn. In his journey in life, Big Ray may have not always followed the Lords path, but in his next to last journey, Big Ray asked the Lord for forgiveness. Ray wanted to be led to the gates of heaven, and be in the arms of the Lord. "So now Papa let the stars carry you to where you are going, and let the clouds be the soft lining that you lay your head upon for you final resting place." You will be truly missed by all. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Oct. 21 at Woodlawn Cemetery.
ZOET, Edna May (McLaurin) – A memorial service for Edna Zoet will be held at St. James Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2006. Edna was born in Albuquerque, NM, on July 28, 1914. Her parents were Blanche and PDL McLaurin. She grew up in Phoenix, AZ, leaving there in 1932 to attend Stanford University. After graduation, she worked briefly in San Francisco. She married Dr. August G. Zoet in 1937 and they moved to Washington, living in Seattle, Lynden and Bellingham where they settled permanently in 1946. They raised three daughters, Marjory, Mimi and Barbara. Edna was active in many local organizations, among them AAUW, League of Women Voters, and Medical Auxiliary, Aftermath Club, Music Club, and St. James Presbyterian Church. She resumed her formal education in the 1960's, earning a Masters degree from WWU in 1964. She then taught at WWU in the Business Education Department for ten years. In retirement, she and August raveled to Holly Society meetings and to various Indian reservations where August took short term medical assignments. August died in 1987 shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary. In the ensuing years Edna continued to visit family in Washington, D.C., Michigan and Colorado. In her eighties she learned to use a computer and wrote an extensive auto-biography, with copies going to her daughters and grandchildren. In 2000 she moved to Colorado to be near family. Edna died on December 1, 2005. She is survived by her daughters Marjory (Peter) Bankson, Mimi (Kim) Cummings and Barbara (William) Vidmar; by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Edna loved her growing family and will be missed by all.

ZOLLNER, Gregory David, age 16, of Wickersham, passed away Sat., Nov. 11, 1995 in a boating accident. He was born Oct. 21, 1979 to David and Peggy (Bowers) Zollner in Bellingham. We will always remember Greg for his zeal for life, his love for his family and for Jesus Christ. He always had a smile and could always say the right things to make you smile. His love for the outdoors and his basic needs are all qualities that make us so proud that the Lord allowed him to be our son. ZOLLNER, Joan Nettie was received into Jesus' arms on July 17, 2004 at 10:00 p.m. Joan was preceded in death by her brothers Frank and Marvin Heath, two grandsons, Gregory Zollner and Joshua Mershon. She is survived by her husband Eugene Zollner and their eleven children: Linda Gullikson, Rita Welters, Nancy Mershon, David Zollner, Diane Griffin, John Zollner, Peggy Zollner, Julie Collana, Luke Zollner, Jeffery Zollner, Kathleen Dejager. She is also survived by twenty-six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Joan Zollner died of a stroke at St. Josephs Regional Hospital, Lewiston, Idaho surrounded by her husband and her children. Joan lived for her family. She was a professional mother, always a smile on her face and offering a helping hand. She loved the Lord, her husband, her family, gardening, sewing and her life. One way she always shared her love was when she would bake one of her fabulous pies. She never came to any function empty handed. She loved being with her children & grandchildren. She was a very special woman! The family would like to thank the staff at St. Josephs Regional Medical Center for their care, kindness and love for our Mom.

ZORGDRAGER, Alberteen M., 86, 7150 Mount Baker Highway, died Monday. Mrs. Zorgdrager was born July
15, 1899 in Minnesota. She and her husband, Sidney, operated a dairy farm in Sumas from 1941 to 1962. Mrs. Zorgdrager moved back to Whatcom County from Morro Bay, Calif., last year. Mr. Zorgdrager died in 1965. Mrs. Zorgdrager is survived by two sisters, including Rachel Strehlein of Maple Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Carolyn Miller of Deming. Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Greenacres Funeral Home, Paul Elvig officiating. Burial will follow at Greenacres Memorial Park. Visitation hours are noon to 5 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home.

ZORNES, Charles "Chuck", age 86 passed away March 2, 2005 at Alderwood Park Convalescent Home in Bellingham. He was born January 28, 1919 in Morehead, KY to Milford & Anna (Stewart) Zornes. As a young man Chuck was very active and participated in athletics. Soon after graduating from High School Chuck entered the U.S. Army and served as Sergeant during WWII and earned a Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Vets and the VFW. Chuck enjoyed watching sports, playing golf and supporting his children's activities. He was very outgoing, friendly, gregarious and playful in any group setting. Chuck was preceded in death by his two brothers Fred J. Zornes and William E. Zornes. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Zornes; son Richard (Penny) Zornes of Bellingham; son Bob Delle Zornes of McCall, ID; daughters Charlene Canter of Wrightwood, CA; daughter Suzanne Smith of Ashland, KY; sister Imogene (Paul) Mayhew of Ranch Palos Verdes, CA and nine grandchildren Mark, Matthew, James, Karen, Jonathon, Melissa, Nicholas, Christopher and Andrew. Funeral Services will be held Mon., March 7th at 11 a.m. at Westford Funeral Home with full military honors by American Legion Post #7. Rev. Tim Lann will be officiating. ZORO, Kathleen died peacefully and comfortably at her home Wednesday, October 9, 2002. She was 86. Kathleen was born March 12, 1916 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada to Lawrence and Kathryn Federal. She married Serge G. Zoro February 7, 1937 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. They lived in Bremerton WA from 1938 to 1977 and came to Bellingham in 1977. Kathleen enjoyed crocheting and reading. Her husband, Serge Gregory Zoro, preceded her in death in 1984. She is survived by her sons Eugene Zoro and wife Peggy of Bellingham, WA and Gregory Zoro of Des Moines, WA. At the family's request, no services will be held. Arrangements entrusted to Westford Funeral Home & Cremation Center Broadway at Eldridge.
ZOUTENDYK, Leonard Jacob was reborn into a warmer gentler life October 29, 2005. He is the youngest son of Jacob Zoutendyk and Elizabeth Dyck. He was born on June 18, 1944 at Sumas Cottage Hospital in Sumas, WA. His first years growing up were in Everson, then Lynden, then into Bellingham, where he attended Franklin Elementary School, where he played the trumpet. He had a lifelong love of classical music and philately and loved watching his stepson play softball. Later in his school years, his family moved to Tacoma, WA, where he graduated from Stadium High School. He then went on to graduate from the University of Washington. His travels took him to be a dispatcher for the Washington State Patrol in Bothell, then on to be a dispatcher and order-taker at City Cab in Bellingham, WA. He immensely enjoyed working with Ron, Deb and the City Cab crew. His wife, Deborah; brother John and wife Nancy; sister Shirley and husband Kenneth; sister Elizabeth and fiancé Jim; nieces Jeanette, Leslie, Melissa, Beth and Kristen; nephews David and wife Jenifer, Nicholas and fiancé Tara survive him. Stepson Charles and wife Jessica, grandson Joshua, granddaughter Alexys; step-son Byron, wife Jessica, grandson Austin and granddaughter Julia; and stepsons Augustus and Darin; and numerous other family and friends also survive him. There will be no funeral services. A memorial will be held at a later date.

ZSIROS, Mark A., 20, a former member of the Bellingham Blazers hockey team, died Thursday (Aug. 13, 1987) at St. Luke's General Hospital of injuries suffered in a fall on Sucia Island. Zsiros, 3963 Hoff Road, was born on June 3, 1967, in Salem, Ore. and lived in Bellingham for 19 years. A graduate of Bellingham High School, Zsiros was a member of the Bellingham Blazers for two years and the White Rock Whalers hockey team in British Columbia for two years. He was a member of Assumption Church, worked at Bellingham Cold Storage. Survivors include his parents, Olive and Janos Zsiros of the family home; three sisters, Anita Gorsegner and Joyce Seiler, both of Bellingham, and Julianna Perry of Victoria, B.C.; his paternal grandfather, Istvan Zsiros of Hungary; four nephews; and numerous other relatives. A brother, Stephen Zsiros, died earlier. The Rosary will be offered at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Westford Funeral Chapel.

ZUANICH, Andrew of Everett died Friday, July 18, 1997, in the Everett Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was 86. He was born Dec. 25, 1910, in Komiza, Yugoslavia, to Winifred and Antone Zuanich. They moved to America when he was 2 years old. He was educated in Bellingham schools. Mr. Zuanich operated the head tender boat for Bumble-Bee Seafood for more than 35 years and was partners with his brother, Frank Zuanich, in the commercial fishing business for more than 30 years. He was an active, long-time member of the Knights of Columbus Council, 4th Degree Assembly, Elks, American Legion, Sertoma Club and Eagles. Survivors include his sister, Jean Travis, of Seattle; brother Frank Zuanich of Everett; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. Monday at Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. A 4th Degree honor guard will be present at the funeral. Services are under the care of Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home.
ZUANICH, Irma B. age 94, passed away in Bellingham on Thurs., Nov. 18, 2004. She was born August 14, 1910 in Bellingham to John & Hilda (Basgaard) Rule. She graduated from Whatcom High School at the age of 16 and worked for Morse Hardware as a secretary for 14 years. Irma married Andrew Zuanich, a local fisherman, in 1939 in Bellingham. After her children were grown she worked as a secretary at the Parks Dept, a teacher's aide at Whatcom Middle School and a volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital gift shop. Irma resided at her home on the south side for 62 years until she moved to the Willows. Irma was an avid bridge player and loved to read and travel. Despite being Norwegian, she was reputed to make the best Slav spaghetti on the south side. Irma was preceded in death by her husband Andrew, in 1969; and her sister Caroline Caufman. She is survived by her son Jim (Shirley) Zuanich of Bellingham; son Dick (Margaret) Zuanich of Palo Alto, CA; grandchildren Nick, Andy, Katherine, Paul, and Becky; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Wed., Nov. 24 from 12 - 5 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Fri., Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. with Deacon Matt Zuanich officiating with a reception following. Graveside Committal will be held at Bayview Cemetery on Mon, Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. Westford Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Broadway at Eldridge.
ZUEHLKE, James William - Four days after his 58th birthday, James William Zuehlke's earthly journey came to an end. As he courageously served his country, with the same courage and pride he also battled cancer, passing on at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. He was born on April 11, 1946, in Jackson, Michigan, to Robert and Rosalind Margaret (King) Zuehlke, the eldest of their four children. After high school graduation, James followed in his father's footsteps and entered the Marine Corps. He served his country courageously in Viet Nam (MCAS - DaNang, MCAS - El Toro, CA) and was honorably discharged in 1971, having attained the rank of E5-Sergeant. He also served in the Marine Corps Reserves for several years. James graduated from Moorpark College, CA, and attended Cal State Northridge. He lived all over the world, residing in California, Washington, Oregon, Texas, and Michigan. For many years, he was a registered respiratory therapist and worked at several hospitals in California and the Pacific Northwest. James was passionate about sports--especially hockey, computers, and working with the Boy Scouts in CA. He was preceded in death by his father
and grandparents.

ZUCK, Oscar Grant - Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jones-Moles Funeral Home for Oscar Grant Zuck, 64, 2341 Yew Street Road, who died Monday (Aug. 19, 1991) in Bellingham. Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Jones-Moles Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Qualis officiating. Interment will be at Bayview Cemetery. He was born July 9, 1927, in Twin Falls, Idaho. He moved to Whatcom County in 1941 and was a 1941 graduate of Bellingham High School. Mr. Zuck was a retired journeyman sheet metal worker and taught apprenticeship and welding at Bellingham Vo-Tech and the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 66 teaching facilities. He was also former fire chief of Yew Street Road Fire District No. 10. He was a member and past president of Sons of Norway Wergeland No. 21 and a member of Silver Beach Community Church. He was an avid skier. He married Phyllis Melbo in 1951, who survives him at the family home. Other survivors include sons, Alan Zuck of Tacoma, George Zuck of Bellingham and John Zuck of Bellingham; a daughter, Terri Chronister of Bellingham; a brother, Dean Zuck of Bellingham; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Arrangements are by Jones-Moles Funeral Home.
ZULICK, Carl – A memorial service for Carl Dale Zulick of Bellingham will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Cornwall Park Church of God. Mr. Zulick died Tuesday, July 4, 2000 at his Bellingham home. He was 45. Born June 29, 1955 in Glendale, Calif. to Wayne M. and Patricia (Zada) Zulick, he enjoyed the natural beauty of Washington state and making people smile. ZURFLUEH, Helmut - Funeral services for former dairy farmer and Darigold Inc. worker Helmut Zurflueh,79, will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Rocky Hartung officiating. Burial will follow in Greenacres Memorial Park. Mr. Zurflueh, 5580 Northwest Drive, died Wednesday (Oct. 18, 1989) at St. Joseph Hospital Main Campus. He was born Sept 2, 1910, in Glanhau, Germany, and had been a resident of Whatcom County for 41 years. He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 231, North Bellingham Grange and North American Swiss Society. He had been employed at Darigold in Lynden for 21 years. A son, John Zurflueh, died in 1981. Survivors include his wife Rhoda; two daughters, Frieda Brester of Bellingham and Norma Adkinson of Maple Falls; a brother Henry Zurflueh of North Bend; a grandchild; and numerous other relatives.

ZURFLUEH, John Henry, 33, of 510 Cypress Road, died Saturday (March 28, 1981) in a local hospital. Born July 15, 1947 in Snoqualmie, he had lived in Whatcom County for 30 years. He was a dryer operator at Darigold in Lynden. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 231. He belonged to Church of Glad Tidings, Bellingham. He is survived by his wife Nita, his parents, Helmut and Rhoda Zurflueh; stepchildren David, Doug, and Renee Rainford, all of Bellingham; two sisters, Frieda Brester in Texas; Norma Adkinson of Maple Falls; nephew Michael Brester; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Veroske, Jerns and LeVeck Funeral Chapel The Rev. James Kirkpatrick will officiate.

ZURFLUEH, Rhoda M. passed away quietly on June 16, 2007, in the home where she was born. She was 90,
born on Feb 1, 1917, to Martin and Mary Hougan. She married Helmut Zurflueh on March 14, 1942. Rhoda was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years in 1989; son John Zurflueh in 1981; brother Ralph Hougan; sisters June Brunhaver Black, Olive Willett, and Mable Seelye; and many nieces and nephews. Rhoda is survived by two daughters Frieda M Brester of Bellingham, and Norma (Roland) Adkinson of Maple Falls, WA; and grandson Michael Brester of Redmond, WA. We want to give a special thanks to her caregivers Sally, Lillie, Freida "Fred," and Shauna for the best care over the last couple years. A funeral service will be held Friday, June 22, 2007, in Greenacres Chapel, Ferndale with burial to follow in Greenacres Memorial Park.

ZUVICH, Anthony John "Tony", district manager for Crosby and Overton Inc., died Thursday Aug 11, (1988) in San Mateo County, Calif. Mr. Zuvich, 44, lived at 4540 Fremont St. He was born in San Pedro, Calif., on Dec. 26, 1943, and graduated in 1962 from Mary Star of the Sea Catholic High School. After serving in the U.S. military in the Vietnam conflict, he moved to Bellingham in 1970. Mr. Zuvich was a member of Church of the Assumption, Elks Lodge No. 194, American Legion Post 7 and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; a son, Anthony Jacob; his mother, Marjorie; a brother, Alexander of San Pedro, Calif.; two sisters, Arlene of Concord, Calif., and Annette Cordell of Irvine, Calif.; and numerous other relatives. Rosary will be said 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of the

ZWAANSTRA, Louis, of Lynden, passed away Sunday (July 11, 1943) at the age of 76 years after a residence in the county of twenty-two years. The widow, Grace; three daughters, Mrs. Tillie Bonkamp, Mrs. Anna Vander Geissen and Mrs. Henrietta Tjoelker, all of Lynden and seventeen grandchildren survive. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Christian Reformed church at Lynden with Prof. D. Volbeda officiating. Interment will follow in the Monumenta cemetery under the direction of the Gillies funeral home.
ZWASCHKA, William A – A funeral for William Albert Zwaschka of Bellingham will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jones-Moles Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harvey Petersen officiating. Burial will follow in Bayview Cemetery. Mr. Zwaschka died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000 in Bellingham. He was 95. Born April 9, 1904 to Peter and Julia Leckie Zwaschka in Vancouver, B.C. he attended Hopewell Grade School and graduated from Nooksack High School and Bellingham Business College. On Oct. 27, 1928 he married Edwina K. Hoover in Everon. He was associated with Mills Electric Co for 42 years and worked as an office manager and contract estimator there. The projects he worked on include U.S. Army Air Corps bases, radar stations and hospitals. He retired in 1971. Mr. Zwaschka was a member of Bellingham Bay Masonic Lodge No. 44, F&AM; United Commercial Travelers of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia No. 295; and First Presbyterian Church, where he served as trustee. He enjoyed the outdoors, golfing and fishing. An avid gardener, he kept the yards around his Bellingham and Lake Whatcom homes in parklike condition. Survivors include his wife; daughters Elaine Bailey of Bellingham and Sun City West, Ariz., and Marion Jones of Bellingham and Mesa, Ariz.; brothers Harold Zwaschka of Sultan and Bruce Zwaschka of Mountlake Terrace; sister Ruth Dunlap of Edmonds; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

ZWICK, Arnold J. "Arnie" of Deming, WA, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, in Bellingham. He was 66, born October 28, 1940, in Bellingham to Stella (Spanski) and Jack Zwick. Arnie was an active member of the Deming Log Show and a volunteer fireman for District 14. He was a logger and worked in construction his whole life. Arnie's family was most important to him. He enjoyed his kids, grandkids, and friends. He liked to fish and spend time on his property in Eastern Washington. Arnie was preceded in death by his father, Jack Zwick, and nephew Aaron McDonald. He is survived by his wife Robin; 5 children: Tammy (Troy) Baisden, Ron (Jennifer) Zwick, Randy Zwick, Philip Zwick, and Melinda Zwick; 8 grandchildren: Trent, Tara, Tiffany,

She had lived in the Deming area most of her life, she was a member of the Deming Presbyterian Church and she was a member of the Shuksan American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband George, 2 sons, Lee and Jack Zwick, 3 daughters, Mrs. Carol Vanderyacht, Mrs. Jean VanDyke and Mrs. Wilma Barter, all of Deming. 1 brother, Glen Ruckty of Shelton, WA. 14 grandchildren. 24 great grandchildren. ZWICK, George "Bob", 83, of 4610 Mosquito Lake Road, Deming, died Monday (March 2, 1981). He was born Sept. 19, 1897 in Ontario, Canada, and has been an area resident most of his life. He was a World War I Army veteran and a member of Mount Shuksan American Legion Post 224. He worked for the Whatcom County road department and was a retired logger. He was the "Bull of the Woods" at the Deming Logging Show in 1968. He is survived by two sons, three daughters, 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. His wife, Connie, died in 1978. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. David Loper. Burial will follow in Saxon Cemetery.

ZWICK, Nelda M. - A funeral service for Nelda M. (Hoyer) Zwick will be at 11 a.m. today at Jones-Moles Funeral Home, followed by burial in Saxon Cemetery in Acme. Visitation was Monday. Mrs. Zwick, a former resident of Whatcom County, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at her home in Naches, Wash., after a long illness. She was 69. Mrs. Zwick was born Dec. 8, 1930, in Upton, Wyo., to Lawrence and Edna (Fortin) Hoyer. She moved to Bellingham in 1952 and lived in Whatcom County until moving to Naches 10 years ago. She held several jobs over the years and enjoyed gardening. She was a master food preserver in Yakima. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Donald Hoyer. Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Robert Lee Zwick brothers Richard Hoyer of Bellingham, Robert Hoyer of Ferndale and Jerry Hoyer of Irvine, Calif. sister Judy Romero of Taos, N.M. stepson Ray Zwick of Arizona stepdaughter Donna Barnes of Sarasota, Fla. seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

ZWICKER, Dolores J."Lori" , age 49, of 6179 Medcalf Rd., Bellingham, died March 7, 1992 at a local hospital. Born in Bellingham, she married her husband Benny in 1978. She was known for her arts and craft work. Besides her husband Benny, she is survived by sons Daryl Grimme of Bellingham and Clark Grimme of Fort Lewis, a daughter Corrine Bolinger of Bellingham, her parents, E.M. and Wilma Patrick of Bellingham, brothers Gary and wife Madeline Patrick of Maple Valley, Leland and wife Erdyne Patrick, Robert and wife Sandy Patrick, and Michael Patrick, all of Bellingham. Sisters Lolita and husband Pete Peterson, Bellingham, Wilma and husband Delbert Johnson, Bellingham, Patricia and husband Roger Buss of Sedro Woolley, and Lynda and husband Russell Grant, Ferndale, six grandchildren, 21 nieces and nephews. ZWICKER, Melvin of Sedro-Woolley died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, of natural causes. He was 47. At his request there will be no service. He was born March 11, 1950, to Harold and Elsie Zwicker, and was formerly from the Custer area. Survivors include his daughter Amanda and son Kenneth Zwicker of Phoenix, Ariz.; friend Karen Winters and her two daughters; brothers Benny of Bellingham and Ron Zwicker of Laurel; sisters Carol Pollock and Sandy Grant, both of Bellingham; and many other relatives.
ZWICKER, Ronald E., age 56, of Laurel, passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2005, in Bellingham after a courageous battle with cancer. he was born on January 25, 1949 in Bellingham to Harold and Elsie (Wheeler Hubbard) Zwicker. Ron was a graduate of Ferndale High School, class of 1967. In his early years, Ron worked as a cook, and then involved himself in making ceramics. He loved it so much that he eventually started his own business, Discount Ceramics, and participated in many craft fairs throughout the area. In addition to his crafting, Ron also worked at Icicle Seafoods for many years and was a former volunteer for the Laurel Fire Department. During his few vacations, Ron enjoyed traveling to Palm Springs. His parents and his brothers, Benny and Melvin Zwicker, preceded Ron in death. He is survived by his son, Mikel Zwicker; sisters Carol Pollock (Don) and Sandy Grant; and numerous other relatives and special friends. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, August 8, 2005 at 10 am at Greenacres|Moles Cemetery, with a Memorial Service at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Bellingham.

ZWIERS, Alyne - A memorial service for Alyne Zwiers, 64, a homemaker, will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Nooksack Valley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. A private family burial of ashes will be held at Nooksack Cemetery. Mrs. Zwiers, 508 E. Pole Road, died Wednesday (May 17, 1989) at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham. She was born Dec. 10, 1924 in Sioux City, Iowa and moved to Whatcom County 14 years later. She married Richard Zwiers on Dec. 25, 1943 in Sumas. She was a member of Goshen Community Church and the Friendly Neighborhood Club. Survivors include her husband; a son, James Zwiers of Lynden; two daughters, Marcia Horat of Custer and Pat Bruner of Wasilla, Alaska; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Constant of Belfair, Wash. and Jeanette Holz of Forks; and three brothers, Tom and Bob Edwards of Kent and Bill Edwards
of Sumas.

ZWIERS, Christopher Reid, age 12, who resided at 3925 Cabrant Road, Everson, passed away suddenly Sunday, February 20, 1983 resulting from a motorcycle accident. He was in the Sixth Grade of Nooksack Valley School; was active in baseball, football, basketball; interested in music, and played the saxophone; was a member of the Nooksack Valley Baptist Church; a member of AWANA Youth Program at the Church. He leaves to survive his parents, Mary McKee of Bellingham; and Jerry Zwiers of Everson; 1 brother Brent Zwiers of Bellingham; paternal grandparent, Irene Zwiers of Everson; maternal grandparents, Clyde and Alice Rice of Bellingham. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 24 at 11 a.m. in the Jerns and LeVeck Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Ruhlman officiating with interment to follow in the Nooksack Cemetery.

ZWIERS, Henry H., age 89 of Sumas passed away on Wed. Nov. 18, 1981. A retired farmer, Mr. Zwiers was born in Holland and moved to Whatcom County from Minnesota in 1936. He was married to Cora Schutte on April 25, 1916. Mrs. Zwiers died in 1970. He is survived by 3 daughters, Joanne and husband John Boers of Seattle, Frances and husband Arnold Olson of Sumas and Irene Burton of Lynden; 3 sons, Richard and wife Alyne of Lynden, Ralph and wife Alice of Bellingham and Paul and wife Anna Marie of Seattle; 30 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Dena Woudstra of Everson and a brother, Bert Zwiers of Lynden; also a sister and 2 brothers in Holland and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded by a daughter Ann Johnson in 1972 and a son Al in 1974. Graveside services will be conducted on Fri. Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. in the Nooksack Cemetery. Services are under the Direction of the Gillies Funeral Home.

ZWIERS, Ralph M. – A memorial service for Ralph Merle Zwiers of Bellingham will be held at New Life Fellowship at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. Mr. Zwiers died Wednesday, March 15, 2000 at The Courtyard in Bellingham of complications from lung cancer. He was 72. He was born July 23, 1927 in Milaco, Minn to Henry and Cora Zwiers. They moved in 1935 to Whatcom County where he and his seven siblings were raised. Mr. Zwiers retired after many years as a truck driver for Wilder Construction Co. He enjoyed working on mechanical, Electrical and plumbing projects around the house, camping and traveling to Reno and Las Vegas, Nev., spending time with family and friends and working in his yard and garage. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Alice; sons Gary, Dale, Darrell and Barry; sisters Fran and Irene; brothers Rich and Paul; stepdaughters Nancy, Jeannie, Karen and Julie; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives. Arrangements are by Valley Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Lynden.

ZWINK, Elma B., age 88, of 2217 King St., passed away Monday, Jan. 30, (1978). She had been a resident of Bellingham since 1935. Surviving are 2 sons, Wayne of San Marcos, CA & Marvin of Seattle; a sister, Frances Allen of Everson; also 4 grandchildren. ZYABLOV, Artum Gennadyevich, age 21, of Sumas passed away Sat., July 28, 2001, as the result of a car accident. He was born May 9, 1980, in the U.S.S.R. to Gennadiy and Ruslana (Lyashuk) Zyablov. Artum came to Whatcom Co. 10 years ago from the U.S.S.R. He worked for Starvin Sams as a cashier. Survived by his mother, Ruslana Zyablov sister, Rusudan Pentsak & husband Alex, niece, Danniella Pentsak all of Sumas. Preceded in death by his father on May 24, 2001. A funeral service will be held Thurs., Aug. 2, 2:30 p.m. in Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Walter Ilyin officiating. Burial will be in Greenacres Memorial Park.
Zyablov, Gennadiy Fedorovich - Visitation for Gennadiy Fedorovich Zyablov of Sumas will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Greenacres Funeral Home near Ferndale. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and burial will be in Greenacres Memorial Park near Ferndale. Mr. Zyablov died of complications caused by a heart attack on Thursday, May 24, 2001, at his home. He was 51. He was born June 25, 1949, to Fedor and Lubov Zyablov in Russia. He moved from Russia to the United States in 1991 and was a Whatcom County resident for nine years. Mr. Zyablov married Ruslana Lyashuk. Mr. Zyablov worked as a truck driver for Starvin' Sam's. Survivors include his wife, daughter Rusudan Pentsak and son Artum Zyablov, all of Sumas, and one grandchild.

ZYLSTRA, Andrew - A gravside service for Andrew Zylstra, formerly of Sumas, will be at 2 p.m. today at Nooksack Cemetery with the Rev. Rich DeRuiter officiating. A reception will follow at the home of Pete and Betty Zylstra. Mr. Zylstra died of cancer Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at Skagit Valley Convalescent Home in Sedro-Woolley. He was 66. Born July 7, 1931, to John and Marie Zorgendrager Zylstra in Sheldon, Iowa, he moved to Sumas in 1943 and graduated from Nooksack Valley High School. Mr. Zylstra served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He farmed in Bellflower, Calif., Sumas, Acme, Battleground, Olympia and Bow. For the past 10 years, Mr. Zylstra transported calves for farmers and enjoyed spending time at local cattle auction. He was preceded in death by brother Dooris Ray Zylstra. Survivors include son Michael Zylstra of Everett, brother Pete Zylstra of Maple Falls, sisters Marilyn Williams of Everson and Ann Alexander of LaBarge, Wyo., and one grandchild. Arrangements are by Gillies Funeral Home.
ZYLSTRA, Dooris Ray, age 41 of Dougway, Utah passed away suddenly Friday, Nov. 28, 1980 from injuries sustained in a traffic accident near American Fork, Utah. A former Sumas area resident, Mr. Zylstra was in Iowa, graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in 1957 & what is now WWU in 1961. After graduating from Western, Mr. Zylstra served for 3 years in the U.S. Army and had since been employed by the United States Government as a chemical engineer at the U.S. Army Dougway Proving Grounds for the past 19 years. He was a member of the Salt Lake City Christian Reformed Church & had been very active in the Little League programs at Dougway and was married to Darlene Scheffer in Everson on Dec. 20, 1963. Funeral services will be conducted on Thurs. Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. in the Nooksack Valley Reformed Church with Rev. Jack Hilbrands officiating. Burial will follow in Nooksack Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.

ZYLSTRA, Edna Earle Peabody, 93, a former Whatcom County resident, died Wednesday (April 1, 1981) in a Seattle hospital. She was born April 25, 1888, in Hammond, Wisc., and married her husband in Lynden in 1909. She is survived by one son and one daughter, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one sister and numerous relatives. A member of Lynden's First Reformed Church and a retired licensed practical nurse, Zylstra moved to Seattle in 1933. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Gillies Chapel. Interment will be in Monumenta Cemetery.

ZYLSTRA, Emma - Funeral services for Emma Zylstra, 89, 918 Grover St., Lynden, will be at 1 p.m.
Wednesday at Third Christian Reformed Church, with the Rev. Gerritt W. Sheeres officiating. Burial will be in Monumenta Cemetery. Mrs. Zylstra died Monday (Oct. 27, 1986) in Bellingham. She was born Jan. 18, 1897, in Iowa and came to this area with her parents, Bastiaan and Vrouke DeHoog, in 1901. She and Paul Zylstra were married in Lynden on Jan. 23, 1920. He died in 1963. Mrs. Zylstra was a charter member of Third Christian Reformed Church and the Faith and Hope Ladies' Circle. Survivors include two sons, Ron "Doc" Zylstra of Lynden and Ed Zylstra of Western Springs, Ill.; a daughter, Bernice Stadt of Lynden; a sister, Kate Spaan of Lynden; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Arrangements are by Gillies Funeral Home.

ZYLSTRA, Jelt, age 57 of 8716 Sunrise Rd., Custer, passed away Monday, March 22 following an extended illness. Mr. Zylstra was a 53 year resident of Whatcom County and was a public relations man for Snelson Construction and had also been employed by VanWerven Trucking prior to his illness. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden and was married to Dorothy May on June 24, 1941 in Custer. Besides his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by 3 daughters, Joan and her husband Jim Schoenmakers in East Wenatchee, Jill and her husband Dan Cramer in Lynden and Janis in Lynnwood, also 3 sons and their wives, Joe and Barbara Zylstra in Englewood, Colo., Jerry and Meredith Zylstra and James and Karen Zylstra of Lynden; 2 granddaughters, Jill Schoenmakers and Michele Zylstra; he is also survived by his father, Joe, in Lynden; 4 brothers, Otto in Bellingham, Mack in Lynden, Andrew of Custer and William in Federal Way; also a sister, Mrs. Ada Martin in Seattle; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 26 at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Arie Leegwater officiating. Interment will follow in the Monumenta Cemetery. ZYLSTRA, Joe M., who was born in Friesland, The Netherlands, and came to Lynden in 1923 from Alberta, Canada, died Thursday (Sept. 29, 1983) at The Lynden Christian Resthome at the age of 93. He had lived at 1318 Front Street, Lynden. His wife, Cornelia, passed away in 1960 and two sons and a daughter also preceded him in death. He was a retired farmer and meatcutter and belonged to the First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden. He is survived by four sons, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden, the Rev. Jacob Dykstra officiating. Burial will follow in Monumenta Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.

ZYLSTRA, Johanna A., 97, a resident of Christian Rest Home in Lynden, died Saturday (Jan. 25, 1992). She was born the daughter of Bernard and Tijska Brune on June 26, 1894 in Orange City, Iowa. In 1909, she moved with her family to Lynden, where she attended Lynden schools through the eighth grade. She was married to Richard D. "Dick" Zylstra on Dec. 9, 1915, in Lynden. Mr. Zylstra died in 1968. Mrs. Zylstra was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church and Golden Hour Ladies Aid. She enjoyed poetry. Two sons have died: Kenneth Lee and Richard David. Survivors include: a son, Lawrence "Mike" Zylstra of Seattle; a daughter, Patricia VanDyk of Lynden; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Hilda Blankers of Lynden and Minnie Osberg of Bellingham. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Second Christian Reformed Church, with the Rev. Louis Kerkstra officiating. Burial will precede at 1:15 p.m. in Monumenta Cemetery. Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday at Gillies Funeral Home.

ZYLSTRA, John A. - Retired dairy farmer John A. Zylstra, 80, formerly of 320 Third St., Sumas, died Sunday (Nov. 11, 1990) at Christian Rest Home in Lynden. He was born Feb. 4, 1910, in Holland, and moved with his family to Iowa in 1920. He married Marie Zorgendrager on April 11, 1931, in Orange City, Iowa. They moved to the Sumas area with their family in 1943. Marie Zylstra survives him at Christian Rest Home. From 1943 to 1968, Mr. Zylstra operated a dairy farm near Sumas. From 1968 to 1988, he worked at the Lynden and Everson livestock auction barns. He was a member of Nooksack Valley Reformed Church and Sumas Senior Center. A son, Ray Zylstra, died in 1980. Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Burial will be at Nooksack Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. Thursday at Nooksack Valley Reformed Church, with the Rev. Earl Crouse officiating.

Mrs. Zylstra was born Jan. 22, 1909, in Ochedan [sic], Iowa, to Peter and Tillie DeBruin Zorgendrager. She married John Zylstra in Iowa on April 11, 1931. They moved to Whatcom County in 1943. Mrs. Zylstra was a homemaker known for her crocheting. She was an active member of Nooksack Valley Reformed Church since 1943 and was active at Sumas Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990, and by a son, Ray Zylstra. Arrangements by Gillies Funeral Home.

ZYSSET, Orville L. of 1624 Country Lane died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1993, in Bellingham. He was 66. Burial will be in Bayview Cemetery. Mr. Zysset was born Nov. 2, 1926, to Adolph and Florence Porter in Everett. He had lived in Bellingham for 65 years. He and his wife, Joan, were married in 1950. He worked at the former Columbia Cement Plant, enjoyed jewelry making, and was a rock-hound and beekeeper. Survivors include his wife at the family home; son Carl L. Zysset of Bellingham; daughters Kathie Champagene of Bellingham and Zoe Ann Dill of California; and eight grandchildren. Arrangements are by Jerns-LeVeck Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.
ZYLSTRA, Otto - Visitation for Otto Zylstra of Bellingham will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Westford Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale, with full military honors and an honor guard provided by American Legion, Albert J. Hamilton Post No. 7, followed by a memorial service at noon at Northwest Baptist Church. Mr. Zylstra died at home Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001. He was 83. Born Feb. 18, 1917, to Joe and Kay (Visser) Zylstra in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1941 to 1945. In 1965, he founded the Avenue of Flags at Greenacres Memorial Park near Ferndale, where he served as organizer and speaker at the 9:30 a.m. Memorial Day services. He also served as chaplain at other services on Memorial Day and as a speaker for Veterans Day services. He also helped other veterans groups with their Memorial and Armistice days programs. He married Phyllis (Deats) Dessauer in Bellingham on June 30, 1991. Mr. Zylstra was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and American Legion, Albert J. Hamilton Post No. 7, and was active in the legion for more than 50 years, serving as a past commander, chaplain, assistant service officer, handicapped children's Christmas programs chairman, and many other offices. He also was a member of the post's Ritual Team. Mr. Zylstra was active in 40 et 8 Voiture No. 112, where he served as chaplain, and in the 40 et 8 Chef de Gare and Aumonier and Medicin, serving as the nurses training chairman. He also served as a chaplain for Disabled American Veterans, Allied Veterans Council, Am-Vets and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a lifetime member of Allied Veterans Council and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 14000. Mr. Zylstra served in the Boy Scouts of America for 12 years, serving two years as the sustaining membership chairman for Mount Baker Area Council. As chaplain, he officiated about 500 funerals since 1950. He was American Legion Post No. 7's first World War II veteran to receive the Frank N. Brooks "Man of the Year" award. For the past 56 years, he served as parade marshal for the International Peace Arch Association for the United States and Canada. Mr. Zylstra was a member of Northwest Baptist Church, where he served as head usher for many years. He also was a member of The Heritage Foundation and the American Security Council.
