YONLICK, George - The Bellingham High School wrestling program has lost its patriarch. Former Red Raiders coach George Yonlick, 78 years old, died on Sunday. "He was the man who started it all," Bellingham wrestling coach and athletics director Brian Smith said. Yonlick coached at Bellingham for 25 years, winning a state title in 1986. The Hall of Fame coach retired after winning the championship, but stayed active in the wrestling community. He roamed the floor of the Tacoma Dome during Mat Classic every season. Bellingham has a tournament every winter that bears his name: the George Yonlick Wrestlerama. "I told my wrestlers (Tuesday) that many of them are (George's) wrestlers' kids," Smith said. "He's the grandfather of this program." Yonlick also was well known throughout the Whatcom County wrestling scene. "George was really kind of a fixture," Mount Baker wrestling coach Ron Lepper said. "Everytime you went to a local tournament he was there. Everybody knew him. A lot of people attached him to that Bellingham program, but it really extended more to all of the programs in the area." Before arriving at Bellingham in 1961, Yonlick coached at Sedro-Woolley and started the wrestling program at Quincy. Yonlick is survived by his wife Anne Marie, son Chris, daughter Cathie and three grandchildren. A service at Christ the King Church, 4173 Meridian St., is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today.

YOUNGDYKE, Edward, age 86 of Bellingham, WA, passed away March 29, 1999 at his residence. He was born April 16, 1912 in Hazelmere, B.C., Canada to Walter and Lydia Youngdyke, and the family moved to Whatcom County later that year. Mr. Youngdyke resided in Sumas for many years and retired from dairy farming in 1971. He loved farming and raised Registered Guernseys. Ed had a true love for gardening and even a greater passion for roses - his rose garden was always well kept and beautiful. He also found enjoyment in helping others with their rose gardens. After 30 years of farming Ed decided to take up golf - for years he played 3 days a week in a men's league and met lots of wonderful people. I know he cherished those memories. Ed was a man who influenced nearly everyone he came in contact with - he had a natural ability to find the positive in everything. He could relate to everyone, from his oldest golf buddies to his youngest grandchild, and always seemed to find the time for everyone. He will truly be missed. Ed placed a high priority in family. He expressed this by never missing any holiday get-togethers. Any event he was ever invited to, from kindergarten parties with his great-grandchildren to family golf outings at Sandy Point, he always showed up early and ready to go. He was a past member of the Lake Padden Senior Golf Club, Bellingham Elks Club, and a past board member of Darigold. Preceded in death by his first wife, Gwen Youngdyke in 1969, and sisters, Mabel Bishop and Emma Farley. Survived by his wife, Bernice Youngdyke of Bellingham; daughter, Joan and husband Doug Marr of Bellingham; a sister, Ruby Miller of Bellingham; 2 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. A memorial service and celebration of Mr. Youngdyke's life will be held at Westford Funeral Home 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999. Mr. Youngdyke will always be loved and missed by his many friends and family. How fortunate we all are to have been touched by such a special person in our lives. Arrangements by Westford Funeral Home.
