SHOCKEY, Grace M., - Homemaker Grace Shockey, 74, of 4819 Columbus St., died Tuesday (Sept. 20, 1988) in Bellingham. Mrs. Shockey was born Aug. 9, 1914. She moved to Whatcom County eight years ago from Seattle. She was a member of the Seattle First Methodist Church. Her husband, Charles, died in 1986. Survivors include four daughters, Grace Kimble of Bellingham, Charlen Jeffray of Hawaii, Jeanett Whitbeck of Pacific Beach and Anne Rames of Puyallup; two sisters, who live on the East Coast; 18 grandchildren; and sic great-grandchildren. Arrangements are pending with Jerns & LeVeck Funeral Chapel.

SHOCKEY, Joseph F. - The funeral for Joseph F. Shockey, 76, of 593 E. Pole Road, a former logging company employee, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the New Life Fellowship Church with the Rev. Harold Minkler officiating. Burial will follow in Lynden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Mr. Shockey died at his home Wednesday (Sept. 19, 1990). He was born May 26, 1914, in Pine Bluff, Ark., and married Meda Collyott in Eminence, MO, on Sept. 14, 1935. They moved to Whatcom County from Illinois in 1949. She survives at the family home. Mr. Shockey worked at various logging companies in the county until 1961, when he began working for Great Western Lumber Co. in Everson. He retired from the company in 1978. He also was a member of the Camels Club of Lynden and enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. Other survivors include sons Ron Shockey of Seattle, Randy Shockey of Lynden, Terry Shockey of Bellingham and Ken Shockey of Ferndale; daughters Joan Taubenheim of Bellingham, Sharon Neer of Lynden, Reva Rathjen of Bellingham, Barbara Tripp of Reno and Sherri Duncan of Ferndale; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. SHOCKEY, Joseph H., age 43 of 2419 Peabody St., B'ham, passed away Tues., Sept. 11, 1979. Mr. Shockey was a driver for the Oeser Cedar Co., was a member of the American Legion #7, Teamsters Local #231. He is survived by his wife, Lucille; 4 sons, Lee, Joe, Chris & Mark of B'ham; 4 brothers, Ronald of Seattle, Randy of Texas, Terry and Kenneth of Lynden; 5 sisters, Joan Taubenheim of B'ham, Sharon Neer of Lynden, Reva Rathjen of B'ham, Barbara Tripp of Nevada, Sherry Melbore of Lynden, and his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Shockey of Lynden. Funeral services Fri., Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. Veroske-Jerns-LeVeck Chapel with Rev. L. Clefisch officiating. Burial will follow at Lynden Cemetery.

SHOEMAKER, Andrew, aged 66 years, passed away at a local hospital Tuesday (June 2, 1942) following a lingering illness. He had been a resident of the county forty-five years and made his home at Route 3, Clipper. Mr. Shoemaker was a millworker by trade and a member of the Whatcom County Dairymen's association and St. Joseph's Catholic church at Clipper. Survivors include the widow, Sophia; four sons, Joseph, of Clipper; Edland, of Kodiak; Michael and John, of Seattle; five daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Morrison, of Sumas; Mrs. Leona Johnson, Mrs. Esther Heins and Mrs. Eva Missiaen, all of Seattle; Mrs. Margaret Missiaen, of Bellingham; a brother, John Szecwyck, of Duncan, Neb., and five grandchildren. Bingham-Dahlquist will make the funeral arrangements.

SHOEMAKER, Joseph C., "Grandpa Joe" of Clipper died Tuesday, July 6, 1993, at home, with his family. He was born March 6, 1907, in Clipper to Andrew and Sophia Briggs Shoemaker and was a lifetime resident of Clipper. Mr. Shoemaker worked as a logger for over 50 years in Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. He helped many local resident. At the age of 16, he rebuilt his parents home after a fire. He volunteered his time in both carpentry and mechanics. Joe and Rosalia M. Strachila were childhood friends who married Jan. 27, 1938, in the former Catholic Church at Clipper. He is survived by his wife, Roaslia M. Shoemaker of the family home; son Richard Shoemaker and wife Susan of Custer; son-in-law Lyman Younkin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters Pat L'Heureux and husband Jim of Yakima and Barbara Showmaker of Mercer Island; two brothers, Mike Shoemaker of Mercer Island and John Shoemaker of Enumclaw; four sisters, Betty Morrison of Sumas, Leona Johnson of Mercer Island, Margaret Missiaen of Bellingham and Esther Heins of Redmond; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Missiaen, and a brother, Ed Shoemaker. A vigil service was held Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Deming. A funeral mass was held Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Private family interment will follow at a later date. Celebrant was Father Gary Southerton. Greenacres funeral home handled arrangements.

SHOEMAKER, Renee Darlene, age 23, of Renton, passed away Sun. Sept. 19, (1982). She is survived by her parents Mr. & Mrs. Stan Shoemaker of Kent. Services will be held Thurs. SHOEMAKER, Rosalia M. - Former Whatcom County resident Rosalia M. Shoemaker died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at her home on Mercer Island. She was 89. She was born March 30, 1908, in Clipper, where she lived her whole life until a year and a half ago, when she moved to Mercer Island. She married Joe Shoemaker Jan. 27, 1938,at the former Catholic church in Clipper. Mrs. Shoemaker raised three children and helped raise five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Children were her special joy. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed needlework. She was preceded in death by her husband; her sisters Victoria, Evelyn and Appolina; and brothers Blaudy, John and Adolph. Survivors include a son, Richard Shoemaker of Custer; daughters Barbara Shoemaker of Mercer Island and Pat L'Heureux of Yakima; brothers Stanley Strachila of Clipper and Joe Strachila of Seattle; a sister, Sister Damian of Bellevue; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Monica Catholic Church on Mercer Island. Arrangements are under the direction of Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Funeral Directors, Seattle.

SHOEMAKER, Sophia N., age 84 passed away in a Seattle hospital Tuesday, April 13, (1976). She had been a life time resident of Whatcom County primarily in the Clipper area. She was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church and leaves to survive four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Missiaen of Bellingham, Betty Morrison of Sumas, Leona Johnson of Mercer Island and Esther Heins of Redmond; 4 sons, Joseph Shoemaker of Clipper, Edlane of Seattle, Michael of Mercer Island and John of Enumclaw; one brother, George Brinks (sic) of Oregon; one sister, Helen Bailey of Burlington; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Rosary will be recited Sun., April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home with Mass of the Christian Burial to be celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Assumption Catholic Church with Father Patrick Callahan as celebrant. Interment Clipper Cemetery, under the direction of Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home.

SHOENBERGER, Brian - A memorial service for Brian Shoenberger, formerly of Whatcom County, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Redwood Regional State Park near Oakland, Calif. Mr. Shoenberger died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 1994, at Summit Hospital in Oakland of a rare spinal disease, Transverse Myelitis. The disease was diagnosed Jan. 7. He was 44. Born May 3, 1949, to Horace and Gladys Shoenberger in Jamaica, N.Y., attended school there and graduated in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in psychology from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. Mr. Shoenberger received a master's degree in psychology in 1975 from West Georgia College in Carrollton, Ga. He moved to Whatcom County in 1975, living on Lummi Island for three years before moving to Bellingham. He worked as a mental health professional in Bellingham at Olympic Treatment Center, the Community Alcohol Center and with the Crisis Center and as a family therapist. In 1983, he graduated with a degree as a certified acupuncturist from the American College of Traditional Medicine in San Francisco. He continued with a private practice in Bellingham until he moved to California in 1986. In California, he continued in private practice and obtained a doctorate in counseling psychology in 1992 from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He married Krista Clark in Oakland. Survivors include his wife of the family home; his parents of Florida; sister Janice Shoenberger in northern New York; and brother Wayne Shoenberger of Long Island, N.Y.

SHOLTZ, Elizabeth - Retired nurse Elizabeth Sholtz, 76, of 2773 Lummi Shore Road, died Friday (July 1, 1988) in a local nursing home. She was born June 24, 1912 in Neah Bay and was a member of St. Joachim Roman Catholic Church. Mrs. Sholtz, a member of the Makah Indian tribe, was very involved as a volunteer for Lummi community activities, and provided foster home care for Lummi children for several years. Survivors include her husband, Solomon Sholtz, of the family home; a son Russell Jefferson of Lummi; four brothers Perry Ides, John Ides, and Carl J. Peterson, all of Neah Bay, and George Ides of Olympia; one sister, Angeline N. St. Clair of Lancaster, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Moles Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joachim's, with Father David Borbridge officiating.

SHOLTZ, Emily, age 69, of Van Zandt, passed away in a local hospital Friday, march 13, (1953). Mrs. Sholtz had resided in this county her entire life, and was a member of the Van Zandt Pentecostal Church. Surviving relatives include two grandsons; Herb and Kenneth Bob, of Sedro Woolley; a granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Media, of Anchorage, Alaska; 13 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Frank Bob, of Route 2, Sedro Woolley; and a nephew, Dan Swanoset, of Everson, Wash. The remains will lie in state at the Van Zandt Pentacostal Church from 4:00 p.m. Monday until noon, Tuesday. Services will be conducted at the Church Tuesday, March 17, at 1:00 p.m. under the direction of Harlow-Hollingsworth. Final resting place, Deming Indian Cemetery.

SHOLTZ, Solomon - A vigil service for Solomon (Solly) Sholtz, or "Chee-Skun," of Lummi Reservation will be held at 7 tonight at Wex li em Community Center. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wex li em, with the Rev. Rob Evenson officiating. Burial will follow at Lummi Nation Cemetery. Mr. Sholtz died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999 at his home. He was 86. Born October 12, 1913, to Charles and Josephine (Solomon) Sholtz on Lummi Reservation. Mr. Sholtz lived in Neah Bay from 1934 to 1944, where he fished and worked in forest conservation. In 1936 he married Elizabeth Ides at Neah Bay. She died in 1988. Mr. Sholtz was an accomplished carver and fisher and enjoyed gardening. Four sisters and one brother preceded him in death. Survivors include son Russell Jefferson and sister Lily Ann Scholtz, both of Lummi Reservation and many foster children. Arrangements are by Moles Funeral Home of Ferndale.

SHOOBS, Frederick M. - There will be no local service for Frederick M. Shoobs, age 57, of 1509 E. Victor St. Mr. Shoobs passed away Sun., Dec. 13, 1981 in Bellingham. He had resided in Whatcom & Skagit Counties for many years and is survived by 1 sister, Hazel Booth of Brooklyn, New York. Local arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home.

SHOOK, James M., 72, of 5894 Barr Road, Ferndale, died Monday (March 26, 1984) in a Bellingham hospital. He was born Aug. 15, 1911, in Glenelder, Kan., and lived in Ferndale for seven years. He was a retired engineer for the Federal Bureau of Reclamation and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Ferndale. He is survived by his wife Lou, one son, one daughter, one brother, two sisters and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Latter Day Saints Chapel, with Bishop Darryl Adair officiating. Burial will follow in Greenacres Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Moles Funeral Home.

SHOOK, Lucy Alice, 71, co-owner of Liz and Lou Catering of Ferndale, died Saturday (March 19, 1988) in her home at 5890 Barr Road. From 1965 to 1970, Mrs. Shook was manager of the diplomatic staff house for the U.S. State Department in Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan. She had lived in Ferndale since 1976 and was in partnership with her daughter in the catering business since 1983. Mrs. Shook received an associate degree from Whatcom Community College and was in her senior year at Western Washington University. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Adair of Ferndale; a son, Dr. Ron Shook of Logan, Utah; two brothers, Emery Smith of Herford, Ariz., and Nathan Smith of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Gertrude Harris of Mill Valley, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Ferndale with Bishop Derrill Adair officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 1:40 p.m. Tuesday in the church's Relief Society Room. Burial in Greenacres Cemetery will follow services. Arrangements are by Moles Funeral Home.

SHOOP, Joseph Hiram, of 2600 F Street, Bellingham, passed away Sunday, (Nov. 24, 1946) at home, after a short illness. He had been a former resident of Lynden and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are, wife Rosa, three daughters, Mrs. Bernice Thomas, Mrs. Dorothy Rogers, both of Bellingham, and Mrs. Doris Godiom, of Los Angeles; one sister, Miss Anna Chenney, of Bellingham; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 29, at 2 p.m. at the Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Interment in the Lynden Cemetery.

SHOOP, Rosa of 1604 I St., passed away Friday, August 28, (1964). She had lived in Bellingham since 1938 and had been employed by the Leopold Hotel. She was a member of the Broadway Presbyterian Church. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Rogers of Bellingham, Mrs. Doris Goodwin of Inglewood, Calif.; 1 sister, Mrs. Ella Jones of Bellingham. SHORE, Helen Hall, age 51, who resided at 1057 State St., passed away at her residence on Thursday, September 13, (1962). Mrs. Shore had resided in Bellingham for the past 2 years. SHORT, Genevria, age 82, of 1705 E Street, passed away in a local hospital, Monday, Nov. 6, (1961). Widow of the late James T. Short, Mrs. Short was a 55-year resident of Bellingham, and a member of the Presbyterian Church. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Cecil Markwood of Rt. SHORT, Harry P., age 51, of 1228 State St., passed away in a local hospital, Monday, May 2, (1960). Mr. Short had been a resident of this community for the past 24 years and was a bootblack at the Leopold Hotel Barber Shop. Surviving relatives include two sisters, Mrs. Ernest W. Hansen of Bellingham, and Mrs. A. W. White of Arlington; two brothers, Winnie Short of St. Louis, Mo., and Casey Short of Astoria, Ore., and numerous nieces and nephews. SHORT, Hilda R., age 45 years, of 1404 Grant Street, passed away at her home Tuesday, Dec. 7, (1954). Mrs. Short had resided in the community for the past 12 years and leaves to survive, her husband, George J., at home; one son, George E., with the Army Dental Corp in Germany; two daughters, Mrs. Doreen Underhill of Bellingham, and Miss Sonia C. Short, at home; two grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Winifred MacFee of Bellingham, Mrs. Mildred Patton of Vancouver, B.C., and Mrs. Vera Prosser, of Portland, Ore.; one brother, Leslie Withey of South Gabriola, B.C.; numerous nieces and nephews. SHORT, Hoshea C., age 74, 1611 Grant Street, passed away at home Monday, May 25, (1964). Mr. Short was a retired Street Department employee; a twenty-two year resident of this city, and a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors are his widow, Elizabeth, at home; four sons, Frank, Chilliwack, B.C.; Cecil, Cheyenne, Wyo., Norman, City; Robert, Stockton, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Lillian May Shingler, Chilliwack, B.C.; Mrs. Vivian Nelson, Stockton, Calif.; Mrs. Evelyn White, Burlington; twenty-seven grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. SHORT, Julia L., age 70, of 417 Fifteenth Street, passed away in a local hospital Sunday, May 7, (1950). Mrs. Short had resided in this community for the past 44 years and had attended the Garden St. Methodist Church. Surviving relatives are her husband, Linus C. at home; one daughter, Mrs. Arline Anholt, of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren; one brother, W. L. Virgin, of Woodinville; two nephews, Norman Tohn, of Bellingham, and Rarden Virgin, of Woodinville; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Dalzell, of Atlanta, Mich., and Miss Janice Virgin, of Woodinville. The remains rest at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth where services will be conducted by the Rev. James Martyn Wilson, Wednesday, May 10, at 1:00 p.m. Cremation. SHORT, Thomas James, age 78 years, 2912 Cottonwood Avenue, passed away at a local hospital Thursday, June 5, (1947). Mr. Short had been a resident of this community for the past thirty-seven years and was a retired railroad builder, had attended the Birchwood Community Church, and was a member of Paola Lodge No. 37, A.F. & A.M. at Paola, Kansas. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Geneva Short; one daughter, Mrs. Cecil Markwood, Bellingham; one brother, John B., of Esquire, Mo., and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The remains are at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth where services will be conducted by the Rev. Everett O. Williams, Monday, June 9, at 1:30 p.m. Final resting Place, Lynden Cemetery.

SHORTER, Mercybell, age 95 of Bellingham died at St. Joseph Hospital on August 23, 2003, after a short illness. Mercybell was born in Jamaica, where she lived until moving to the United States in 1969, eventually settling in Washington State. She was a devoted member of Jehovah's Witnesses for over 60 years. She dedicated her life to her faith and preached every chance she could. She was kind, considerate, intelligent and an avid reader, having taught many children and adults how to read. She was an amazing clothing designer and could make everything without a pattern. Mercybell is survived by five children and eight grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Monday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. "The soul takes flight to the world that is invisible and there arriving is sure of bliss and forever dwells in Paradise." SHORTSLE, James E., age 75 of Sumas, passed away at his home Saturday August 8, (1964). A retired railroad employe he had been a resident of Sumas since 1924. He had served with the U.S. Army during WWI, was a member of the Sumas Post American Legion and the Lynden Barracks of WWI Veterans. Surviving is his wife, Lillian, 1 son, James of Everett, 1 daughter, Mrs. Loretta Brokaw of Bellingham; 2 brothers, Frank & Leo both of Grand Rapids, Michigan, 2 sisters, Mrs. Marie Davis of Spokane and Mrs. Margaret Salmanden of Grand Rapids, Michigan, also 4 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Gillies Funeral Home in Sumas, Tuesday, August 11, at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Claire Richards officiating. Burial will follow in the Sumas Cemetery with military honors by the Sumas American Legion Post.

SHORTSLE, Lillian B., age 85, longtime Sumas area resident, passed away on Mon. Sept. 15, 1980. Born in Missouri (March 31, 1895), Mrs. Shortsle moved to the Sumas area in 1924. Prior to her retirement she had worked for many years as a cook in the Sumas Schools and was a lifetime member of the Sumas American Legion Post Auxiliary. She is survived by a daughter Mrs. Loretta Brokaw of Bellingham; a son Jim of Pasco, Wash.; 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; numerous nieces & nephews. Graveside services will be conducted on Thurs. Sept. 18 at 11 a.m., Rev. Earl Crouse officiating. Services are under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.

SHORTSLE, LeRoy Joseph, age 26, of Sumas, passed away in a local hospital Thursday, May 12, (1949) following a short illness. Mr. Shortslee (sic) had been a resident of Sumas for the past 25 years. Surviving relatives include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Shortslee, of Sumas; one brother, James B., of Sumas, and one sister, Mrs. Loretta Brokaw, of Bellingham. Funeral services will be conducted in the Chapel of the Gillies Funeral Home in Sumas, Tuesday, May 17, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. McKnight officiating. Interment in the Sumas Cemetery.

SHORTT, Harriett Murphy (born September 13, 1928 in Seattle, WA) passed away on July 15, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her brother John, her daughter Shannon, four sons (Bruce, Eric, Bob and Will), eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Harriett graduated from the University of Washington twice, earning her B.A. and later her M.A. in Public Health Nursing. In 1951 she joined the Army and proudly served in the nursing corps in Germany during the Korean War. She was honorably discharged in 1953. It was in the Army that Harriett met her first husband, George Olson, who died as a young man of leukemia. Harriett later met Bill Shortt to whom she was married for 43 years. She was a lucky woman to have had two good men as husbands in her lifetime. Harriett and her husband Bill were residents of Federal Way for 38 years. During that time, Harriett was a dedicated school nurse as well as the informal neighborhood nurse for her neighbors and all her children's friends. She was well known for her baking skills. Her Christmas braid and apple pies live on as a family tradition. Later, Harriett moved to Bellingham to be closer to her daughter where she acquired many new friends. Harriett lived productively with M.S. for nearly 30 years and was very active in the King County M.S. Society. There will be a private gathering of the family to honor her life.

SHORTT, William Nevin, (Bill) born April 23, 1932 in Seattle, WA, passed away May 9, 2006 in Bellingham, WA surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife Harriett, a brother and sister, four sons, a daughter, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in Economics and was an avid Husky fan his entire life. In 1956 he joined the Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean War. In 1959, he was honorably discharged in order to take on the responsibility of the family business. He owned and operated Shortt Saw and Knife Company in Tacoma for 28 years. It was no coincidence when Bill met his future wife, Harriett. Both mothers, Florence Shortt and Harriet Stanchfield Murphy conspired together to have the two meet. Mothers do know best, as it resulted in a marriage that served as a model to their family lasting 42 years. Bill and Harriett were residents of Federal Way for 38 years before moving to Bellingham to be closer to their daughter. While living in Federal Way, Bill served on the Board of the Multi Service Center. He was an active, long-time Kiwanian and was responsible for recruiting many members still serving today. He loved the community and volunteered on many committees, especially as Federal Way formed as a city. Additionally, Bill was a long-time Cascadian. The family will have a private gathering to honor his life.

SHOTWELL, Oren E. (Bud), age 69, of 2300 Woburn, passed away in a local hospital Tuesday, Oct. 14, (1958). Mr. Shotwell had resided in this community for the past 33 years; was a member of the F.O. SHRIVER, Lester L., age 51 of 3607 W. Maplewood Ave., passed away suddenly Sunday, Jan. 23, (1966). Mr. Shriver was a lifetime resident of Bellingham. He was a commercial fisherman and belonged to the Fisherman's Union. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Laurel Post VFW. SHUE, Kenneth Wayne - Former Bellingham resident Kenneth Shue, 58, of Los Osos, Calif., died Sunday, April 26, 1992, at his home following a long illness. He was born July 27, 1933, in Carlsbad, N.M., to Paul and Alma Bart Shue. His business career was in the retail grocery industry. Mr. Shue lived in Bellingham from 1978 through 1985. He was a member of the Bellingham Rotary Club and very active with the Bellingham/Whatcom County Visitors and Convention Bureau. He married Dana Montgomery in 1985. She survives him at the family home. Other survivors include his son Kenneth W. Shue Jr. of Palo Alto, Calif.; daughters Terrie Welch and Jayne Shue, both of Bellingham, and Gerry Gottschalk of Grass Valley, Calif.; and six grandchildren. At Mr. Shue's request, there were no services. Arrangements were by Los Osos Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary in California.

SHULER, Doris Leona, age 38 years, of Lynden, passed away Saturday, March 27, (1948) following a long illness. Mrs. Shuler had been a resident of Lynden for the past ten years. SHULER, William - Funeral services for William Shuler, 86, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lemley Chapel in Sedro Woolley with burial to follow in the Burlington Cemetery. Mr. Shuler died Sunday at United General Hospital. Born in 1889 in Waynesville, N.C., he lived in the Alger community from 1945 until 1969 when he moved to Sedro Woolley. He was a retired logger. Mr. Shuler is survived by his five sons, Wayne of Sedro Woolley, Lee of Burlington, Roy of Bremerton, Bill and Ernest of Waynesville, N.C.; seven daughters, Mary Ashe of Burlington, Mamie Robinson of Sedro Woolley, Maizie Rogers of Beaver, Wash., Mag Williams of South Carolina; and Mattie Faulkner of Idaho; 40 grandchildren; 91 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

SHULL, Charles Morell, Jr., age 82, of Acme passed on Memorial Day, May 31, 2004. Charles was a lifelong teacher and Professor Emeritus of the San Diego State University Dept. of Physical Science. After his retirement he became a resident of his beloved South Fork Nooksack Valley for 21 yrs. Charles and his wife, Lee, celebrated 52 years of marriage together. Charles is survived by his wife and their two daughters: Nancy Lee and Paul Kolk of Heiloo, The Netherlands and Suzanne of Bellingham, and three sons: Charles III and Terry of Seattle, Michael and Yvonne of Birch Bay, and Stephen and Jeannie of Kihei, Maui and 11 grandchildren. We will miss him! Interment will be in Saxon Cemetery with a Celebration of Charles' life to be held at a later date.

SHULMIER, Vida May, age 84, pioneer resident of Birch Bay, passed away Saturday, March 20, (1976). She had been a resident of Birch Bay since 1910 and then moved to Bellingham in 1962. She was a member of the Garden St. Methodist Church, Birch Bay Chatter Club, and a Charter Member of the Birch Bay Grange. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Beth) Farley and Mrs. Eddie (Maxine) Heideman both of Bellingham. Two sisters, Eda Koons, of Seal Beach, Calif. and Ura Maxwell of San Jose, Calif. Also 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in Veroske's Bellingham Chapel, Tuesday March 23 with the Rev. Lawrence Guderian officiating. SHUMAN, Bruce E., "Bru", local business owner and friend of many, left us unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep in the wee hours of Friday, Jan. 19, 2007. He was taken much too soon at age 58. Bruce is mourned by his devoted wife, Abi, beloved daughter, Gretta Bruecken, cherished granddaughter Cailyn Bruecken, father Don, brother Richard, sister Cindy, as well as scores of people he touched in this community. SHUMATE, Fred, 82, 2005 Alabama St., died Monday (Sept. 16, 1985) in a local hospital. Mr. Shumate was born Nov. 19, 1902, in Crumpler, N.C. A Bellingham resident since 1922, he served in the Navy for six years. He was a retired sawmill worker, having worked in Bellingham and Darrington. Mr. Shumate was a member of Garden Street United Methodist Church; Whatcom Lodge 151, F&AM, where he was a past master; Scottish Rite Bodies; Nile Temple of the Shrine; Northwest Shrine Club; and Maple Leaf Chapter 58, Order of the Eastern Star. He and his wife, Alice, would have been married 60 years on Oct. 4. Besides his wife, survivors include three daughters, Margaret Davis of Bellingham, Harriet Olsen of La Habra, Calif., and Virginia Reid of Hawaii; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother (Claude Shumate of Edgewood, MD). Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Westford Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Greenacres Memorial Park.

SHUMATE, William V. - Funeral services for Mr. William V. Shumate, 77, will be conducted on Thursday, June 3, (1982) at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Gillies Funeral Home with Rev. Lewin Clefisch officiating. Burial will follow in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Mr. Shumate, of 7082 Goodwin Road, Everson, was born in Crumpler, North Carolina (April 20, 1905) and died at his home on Sunday, May 30, (1982). A retired mill worker, Mr. Shumate retired from Summit Lumber Company in Darrington and was a member of the Lumber & Sawmill Workers Union. A 30-year county resident, he moved from Myrtle Point, Oregon and was married to his wife Mildred in Everson on November 1, 1970. He is survived by his wife Mildred; three sons, Richard of Fairbanks, Alaska, Bill in Alabama and Ronald in Churchville, Maryland; two daughter, Mrs. Joan Tirocchi of Phoenix, Arizona and Mrs. Mary Wipprecht of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; a step-son, Ronald Straka of Bellingham; two step-daughters, Mrs. Cecilia Heykamp of Dorna, Oregon and Mrs. Carol Shelly of Nooksack; numerous grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Shumate of Bellingham and Claude of Edgewood, Maryland and numerous nieces and nephews.

SHUMWAY, Elaine Doty, of 7867 Noon Road, Lynden. loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend to so many, passed away Thursday, Sept. 9, 1993 at the age of 74. Elaine was born to Arthur and Letha (Wilson) Doty in Seattle on Jan. 2, 1919. She graduated from Fairhaven High School in 1937. On Aug. 10, 1940 she was married to Howard Shumway of Lynden. They moved to Pullman and then Seattle before settling on the corner of the Abbott and Noon roads, where they spent the last 51 years. Elaine worked for a time at the former Bellingham Avalon Theater and as an elevator girl for Fredrick and Nelson. She was the first chapter president of Theta Rho of Bellingham and first Washington and Alaska president of Theta Rho in 1937; past worthy Matron of Lynden Chapter No. 12 of Order of Eastern Star; member and past president of Lynden Chapter EA of PEO; past state committeewoman for Whatcom County Republican Party; docent member of the Bellingham Museum, member of the First Baptist Church in Lynden, where she was a choir member. She also worked for The Lynden Tribune in advertising sales for 18 years. Elaine was a loving homemaker and enjoyed traveling.
She is survived by husband Howard of the family home; daughter Kim Shumway Bonsen and husband Jerry of Lynden; son Ladd Shumway and wife Paige of Lynden; mother Letha Doty of Bellingham; sister Maryn Doty Reid and husband Darrell of Blaine; brother Jack Doty and wife Nancy of Mount Vernon; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two nieces and two nephews. She was preceded by an infant son, Douglas, in 1943. A memorial funeral service was held on Monday at the First Baptist Church in Lynden with Rev. Hoyt Sherwin officiating. Burial preceded in Lynden Cemetery. Services and arrangements were under the care of Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.

SHUMWAY, Louise M. - Funeral services for Mrs. Louise M. Shumway, age 92, who died on Monday, Feb. 25, (1980) will be conducted Friday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Gillies Funeral Home with Revs. David Loper and David Mann officiating. Burial will follow in the Lynden Cemetery. Mrs. Shumway, who had resided at 7845 Noon Road Lynden, was born in Rock Springs Wyoming (Sept. 20, 1887) and moved to the Lynden area in 1894. She was married to her husband Ray in Bellingham, Jan. 4, 1910; Mr. Shumway, who was a county pioneer farmer, died in 1969. She had been a member of the Everson Presbyterian Church where she had served as a deaconess for many years. She is survived by two sons, Howard and his wife Elaine of Lynden and Ray and his wife Gladys of Morton; two daughters, Mrs. Lois and her husband Ted Nelson of Fremont, California and Mrs. Ione Harris of Elmo, Montana; six grand and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Mr. Elbert Meurrer of Lynden and a sister, Mrs. Clyde Reed of Everson and numerous nieces and nephews.

SHUMWAY, Ray C. of Lynden passed away on July 10, 2005. His passing was willful, but mild. Ray was born on December 6, 1919 to Ray and Louise Shumway. He grew up on the 100-acre dairy farm of his Whatcom County pioneer family. He was captain of the basketball team his senior year and graduated from Lynden High School. He spent the next four years at Washington State University from which he received his bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science in 1944. During his first year of teaching Ray met his beloved wife, Gladys Johnson, a young business education teacher from Iowa, while both were teaching at Nooksack Valley High School. They were married in 1947. Five years later they moved to Sequim, Washington where Ray taught veterans in adult educational vocational agriculture classes, as well as high school and junior high school science. He also ran a dairy farm in Sequim. Ray furthered his education at Western Washington University where he received his teaching certificate, and years later, his master's degree in school administration. Ray continued teaching in the White Pass School District where he was an elementary school teacher and later principal of Randle Elementary School for 15 years. He and his wife both retired from the public school system in 1977. After retirement, Ray received his real estate license. He was also an extraordinary gardener, the family poet, and avid reader, and a supportive and generous grandparent. He was also known for his great sense of humor. Of course, one cannot remember Ray without thinking of his love for all the Seattle Sports teams.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years and his two sisters, Lois Nelson and Ione Harris. He is survived by his brother, Howard Shmway; his two children, Greg Shumway and Rochelle Coleman; and his six grandchildren Ariel Coleman, Brian Shumway, Mike Shumway, Kaleb Coleman, Scott Shumway and Ginny Shumway. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Greenacres Memorial Park.

SHUPE, Arthur D., age 88 years, of 2231 Williams Street, passed away at a local hospital Sunday, May 18, (1952) following a lingering illness. Mr. Shupe had been a resident of Bellingham for the past nine years and was a retired farmer. He was a member of the First Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Lucy; two sons, Fielden, of Igloo, South Dakota, and William A., of Glacier Star Route, Deming; one daughter, Mrs. Lydia Olson, of this city; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lemuel and Homer, both in North Dakota; three daughters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 21st at 4 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Wagoner officiating. Interment. Greenacres Memorial Park.

SHUPE, Lucy, age 86 years of 1902 E. North St., passed away at a local hospital Sunday, April 6, (1958) following an extended illness. Mrs. Shupe had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 15 years and was a member of the First Christian Church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lydia Olson of this city; two sons, Fielden of Igloo, S. Dakota; William of McMinnville, Oregon; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Brown of Port LePrairie, Manitoba. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 9 at 1:30 p.m. within the Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home with Rev. Allan Wood, pastor of Calvary Temple officiating. Interment Greenacres.

SHURE, Mary, age 74 years, of Seattle, Washington, passed away at the home of her daughter in Bellingham, Friday morning, July 9, (1948) after a short illness. Mrs. Shure had been a resident of Seattle for the past eight years and a former resident of Bellingham for 30 years. She is survived by one son, Sol Shure, of Seattle; three daughters, Lena Geinberg and Esther Jaffe, both of Seattle, and Margaret Horwitz, of Bellingham; one brother, I. Krupat, of South Africa; also five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The remains were forwarded to Seattle by the Westford-Beck Funeral Home where funeral services will be held.

SHURE, Sol, age 77, passed away in a Seattle hospital, March 30, 1978. He was a former resident of Whidbey Island & was a retired pharmacist. He leaves to survive 2 sisters; Mrs. Margaret Horwitz of B'ham & Mrs. Esther Jaffe of Seattle. Also numerous nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held Fri. March 31st at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home with Rabbi Frederick S. Gardner officiating with interment to follow in Beth Israel Cemetery under the direction of Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home.

SHUSTARICH, Robert John (Zac) age 20 months, of 1202 5th St., Anacortes passed away Thurs. Dec. 4, 1980 in Seattle.
