SHELTON, Grace Gurr - July 9, 1920 - July 6, 2003 - A Life Celebrated -Grace Gurr Shelton was an incredibly positive force of nature for every person whose life she touched. She was strong in ways that made us all gasp, while showing compassion without depth to those who really needed her help. She was our Champion, believing without hesitation in the inherent worth of each one of her family members, and was the first and the last person to urge us to follow our dreams. How does one describe someone who saw life so simply, yet managed to successfully navigate through life's complexities? She overcame each obstacle with humor, graciousness, a sense of destiny, with unbelievable stamina, and, if needed, sometimes grim determination. Yet, Grace understood how complicated life could feel for the rest of us, sometimes giving blunt advice when we needed it (like it or not). She was our rock, always there for us if we needed her, but someone who allowed us to rise and fall on our own wits and devices. There are few of us in her huge family (22 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren) who haven't heard her ask, "Well, did you learn anything from it?" She grew up on the Ute Indian Reservation, a harsh, unforgiving corner of Utah. This is where Grace learned that a family must depend upon each other, "We all had to work together or we wouldn't survive the winter." Her earliest memories were of milking cows, helping with the cleaning, cooking, weeding, canning, or the other numerous chores involved in living off the land. It wasn't all drudgery, though. When time allowed, she was on her horse exploring the countryside and conjuring up mischief with her brother Earl. She was one of those kids whose knees were always skinned and her clothes dirty from living life to the fullest. The Gurr kids rode their horses to school, a one-room building shared by all grades. She boxed with the boys, played baseball (which remained a lifelong passion she was an inveterate Mariners fan, able to quote each player's box scores), loved ice skating and sleigh rides. She was relieved when her sister Helen was born, fulfilling her mother's hope of actually having a "girl."
When Grace reached the ripe old age of fourteen she met a dashing young man from California, Robert Bud" Shelton. His good looks and winning dimples caught her attention, but his Al Capone-style Hudson with a "cut out" clenched it. Bud was a good one-armed driver, according to Grace. Grace's heavenly biscuits caught his attention. Love was in the air. Bud and Grace married in March of 1935, beginning their life together with 27 flat tires during the honeymoon back to California. The first summer together was spent camping, panning for gold, and enjoying married life. Grace bore her first two children (Phyllis Ann and Robert Gene) during the harsh Depression years, and the next two children (James Gary and Carolyn Lea) during World War II. A fifth child, Cynthia, "surprised" the family in 1957. Bud's eldest daughter Geraldine rounded out the bunch. Whatever the challenge, the Depression, war, or Bud becoming disabled in the early 1960's, Grace stepped up to the plate, and did what she had to do to support her family. She worked numerous jobs over the years often giving up sleep to work night shifts which allowed her to still take care of the kids during the day. In 1964 she decided it was time to begin a new career and became a realtor. As with everything in her life she attacked this new job with determination and a strong sense of ethics, eventually winning awards for top sales and listings. She worked while maintaining her home, including cooking three meals per day for Bud, canning, keeping up an active presence in her church, and ministering to family members and friends who needed food cooked, a ride to the doctor, or a sympathetic ear. No matter how busy she was though, the farmer in her had to be heard. She loved flowers, and always had some type of flower garden, if not a full vegetable garden. She was fiercely loyal. Her country was always number one, her church was forever the "one true church," and her kids and their kids always were the best or the smartest people she'd ever met. She was our cheerleader, someone who constantly saw the best in us. Any grandchild or great-grand-child who she perceived to be an underdog (whether they really were or not) could count on Grace for some extra cheerleading. She was instantly their biggest defender. Grace believed in taking on whatever challenges came her way with the same courage, humor, indomitable spirit as her pioneer ancestors. When diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, she tackled it, wrestling it down, and kept the disease at bay for almost nine years. In 2000, at age 80, the cancer was rediscovered, this time having metastasized into her liver and bones. Chin up, she took it on once again with the same humor, forthrightness, and stamina that brought her through every day of her life. She was determined to beat it, and she challenged her doctors (and was a challenge to them at times!) to beat it back again, exceeding anyone's wildest expectations by surviving for another three years. True to her character, when she finally accepted that the cancer would beat her, she quickly let go of this life that she had hung on to so tenaciously. Refusing to be a burden to her family, Grace transitioned gently, in her own bed, following a day of being surrounded by her family. Babies cried, and toddlers played and yelled and fought, while moms and aunts and grandmas reacted. Older kids breezed in and out, and adults visited, trying to be of help in any way they could. It was a day of goodbyes and laughter and tears and hugs. We celebrated her life and the blessings she brought to each and every one of us. All in one day. She wouldn't have tolerated it being any other way. We miss her laughter already. We miss her soft, strong hands. We miss her steady, clear green eyes. But most of all, each of us has asked ourselves, "How am I going to face this life without my Champion and Protector?" And each of us has smiled sadly, quietly realizing that our lives will be easier because of her example. This world is a gentler, better place because of her. We will miss you every day, Grace. Thank you for giving us all of you, and showing us what a human being can be.
