RANEY, Dorothy Jane McVeigh was born on June 7, 1923 in Oskaloosa, Iowa and died a citizen of the world on March 30, 2007. During her life she lived on the east and west coasts of the U.S., in Europe and Asia, and she traveled extensively in pursuit of beauty and a personal understanding of the world. Although in some ways she remained a strong, quiet mid-westerner, she also developed a global outlook through her abiding passion and commitment to the life of the Earth and its people. Jane was the second daughter born to Dorothy Simmons McVeigh and Henry Hancock McVeigh. After leaving Iowa they moved several times in the midwest and California and then settled in Spokane, Washington. Her mother spoke of hearing school children running home for lunch outside the Mercy Hospital in the days following her birth and perhaps because of this early influence Jane always loved school. In June 1941 Jane graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane then entered Mills College as a Trustees Scholar that fall. While earning a BA in Art History she also volunteered as a Red Cross nurse's aid, attended some of the first meetings of the United Nations Organization in San Francisco, and became a member of the San Francisco Potters' Guild. Her ceramic work was exhibited in several museums in the Bay Area. In April 1945 as student body president, she christened the Liberty Ship "Mills Victory." In June 1945 June graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation she moved to New York City to attend the Art Student's League, studying figure and composition under Howard Trafton. In 1947 Jane was hired by Washington State College in Pullman as an instructor in drawing, composition, jewelry and ceramics.
During this period she enticed our father, Franklin Chalmers Raney, into her art studio by means of fresh popcorn. They were married in Spokane in 1948. During the next six years they moved from Spokane to Ithaca, NY; to Landsburgh, Germany during the Korean war; to Pleasant Hill, CA; and finally Davis, CA in 1954, acquiring four children along the way. Jane obtained a teaching credential at UC Davis and taught art at nearby Vacaville High School until the family moved to Bellingham in 1966. In Bellingham Jane worked as a substitute teacher and as a real estate broker with Lakeway Realty, Morris Piha Realty and Walston Realty until retiring. She and Frank were divorced in 1975. Jane was a longtime active member of First Presbyterian, St. James Presbyterian and most recently the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship. Years of singing in church choirs brought her much joy and peace of mind. Painting, sketching, traveling, knitting, reading, gardening, political activities and treasuring her family and many friends willed her life with contentment. Jane loved the Earth – its living creature and plants – and actively campaigned for peach and justice for its people. She supported the Democratic Party, the League of Women Voters, the Audubon Society, The Sierra Club, Amnesty International Greenpeace and many other planet-sustaining organizations. The Red Cross received more than sixty pints of her blood over the years. Her many letters to the editor were a delight to her friends and family – she reserved her anger for political leadership gone awry but was endlessly patient with people. Jane's service as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines from 1984 to 1986 exemplified her commitment to world peace and led her to new understandings of economic and social injustice and the evanescence of life. With sad hearts we wish you to know that our beloved mother Jane died serenely. Towards the end she was surrounded by all her children and was cared for gently and with love by Hospice and the angels at Fairhaven Estates, where she had made her home for the last two and a half years. Jane is survived by her four children Rebecca Jane Raney, Jonathan Muir Raney, Michal Ann Handy, and Marion Raney Oman as well as five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Jane enjoyed a very happy life and would like to thank her many friends and relatives for the joy and sweetness they contributed so freely. According to her wishes the family is planning a celebration of her life outdoors in Bellingham this summer to share memories of a remarkable, wise, and loving woman.
