MASTERMAN, Richard "Dick" age 86, of Birch Bay, passed away on May 16, 2006. Born in Walla Walla, WA, and raised in both Spokane and Portland, Dick was the ultimate member of the Greatest Generation. Living and working through the Depression, he joined the Navy at age 20, working his way from Enlisted man to gunner to bomber pilot on carrier ships. During flight training in Texas, he met and married the love of his life, Buffy. Together, they raised three children and taught them the value of hard work, a good education, a sense of adventure and fun, and the love of family. Dick loved the outdoors and spent much of his life camping with his wife and kids, fishing with his buddies, or hunting with his son. As a mechanical engineer at Boeing for 34 years, he was part of the Lunar Orbiter team which put the first unmanned ship into outerspace. Dick loved to work with his hands, creating artistic pieces of stained glass, metal-work, and furniture. For most of his life, his cars never saw the inside of a mechanics shop, always kept in meticulous shape by Dick. In the latter years of his life, he and Buffy traveled through the United States and Europe, spending many memorable winters down in Arizona. An integral part of both his children's and grandchildren's life, Dick attended birthday parties, graduations, concerts, and countless sporting events. In his eyes, his grandchildren "hung the moon." Dick will be remembered as a renaissance man who knew something about everything, a friend who loved to help others, a constant source of knowledge to those around him, an incredibly involved and loving father and grandfather, and a supremely beloved husband. He is survived by Buffy, his wife of 59 years, his daughters Carol Floyd and Laurie Mullarky, son-in-law Craig Mullarky, and grandchildren Daniel and Marc Floyd and Alex and Megan Mullarky.
