MARTE, Ann K. - Ashes of Ann K. Marte of Seattle will be placed at Bayview Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Leonard C. Ericksen will officiate. Ms. Marte died Nov. 11, (1985) in Seattle. She was 58. She was born May 9, 1927, in Ada, Minn. Ms. Marte did not live in Whatcom County, but family members said she had requested to be buried next to her sister, former Bellingham resident Alice Gilbertson, who died in 1964. Survivors include her mother (Amanda Gilbertson of Quill Lake, Sask.) and a cousin (Harold Gilbertson of Fort Assiniboine, Alberta), both in Canada.MARTELLINO, Joan - A Mass for Joan (English Cole) Martellino of Seattle, formerly of Bellingham, will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Seattle, with the Rev. Lee Kapfer officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Holy Rood Cemetery in Shoreline followed by a reception at 2 p.m. at Meany Hotel in Seattle. Mrs. Martellino died of cancer Saturday, Jan 15, 2000 at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. Her age was unavailable. Born to Charles A. and Elizabeth (Verser) Cole in Newport, RI, she lived in Bellingham from 1975 to 1996. Mrs. Martellino attended Georgetown University for two years. Mrs. Martellino worked for The Bellingham Herald for about one year during the early 1980s. She also was involved in the maritime fishing industry. She was a member of Women's Maritime Association and was a pioneer of women pursuing careers in the commercial fishing and maritime industries. Survivors include son Ozo Jaculewicz of Seattle; mother of Leesburg, VA; and one nephew. Arrangements are by Butterworth Funeral Home of Seattle.

Surviving relatives are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Marten; one brother, Donald Richard; one sister, Leslie Ann, all at the family home; grandparents, Mr. Otto E. Marten, of Seattle,, and Mrs. Augusta Marten, of Bellingham, also Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Carr, of Portland, Ore. Private services were conducted from the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth by Canon E. B. Smith Wednesday, July 15, at 10:30 a.m. Final resting place, Greenacres Memorial Park.
MARTEN, Donald E. - Funeral services for Donald E. Marten of Bellingham will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Westford Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Marten died Wednesday, May 17, 2000 at home. He was 86. He was born July 23, 1913, in Hettigen, N.D., to Otto and Augusta (Eernisse) Marten. In 1964, he married Nonabelle Haws in Bellingham. He worked as a butcher for BB Meats for 40 years. Mr. Marten was a member of the Bellingham Yacht Club, Bellingham Elks Club, Moose Lodge, Garden Street Methodist Church, Sons of Norway, Whatcom Lodge No. 151 F&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Nile Temple of the Shrine, and Past Patron of Eastern Star. He is survived by his wife, of the family home son Donald Marten of Santa Rose, Calif. daughter Leslie Nesbit of Bellingham stepson Jeff Haws of Arlington stepdaughter Angela Olson of Snohomish 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. (From The Bellingham Herald, 18 May 2000) Submitted by Merrily Lawson.MARTEN, Nonabelle Haws, age 89, of Bellingham, WA, died January 11, 2004 at her residence with her loving family by her side. She was born February 5, 1914 in Chapin, Michigan to Roy and Gertrude (Berg) Hall. She was preceded in death by husbands Vern C. "Bud" Haws, and Donald Marten. Nonabelle graduated from nursing school at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital in 1935 and spent five years as superintendent of Lansing, (Mich.) City Hospital, eight years as administrator of Whatcom County Hospital, owner and administrator of Parkhaven Nursing Home, and administrator, part owner of Shuksan Convalescent Center. She also taught nursing occupation, was an anesthetist and X-ray technician, and twice past state chairman for the State Health Facilities Association. In 1970 she was accepted as a fellow in the American College of Nursing Home Administrators, Silver Spring, MD. She was a member of the Garden Street Methodist Church, Sons of Norway, Ladies of the Elks, Moose Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary, Daughters of the Nile, VFW Auxiliary, Bellingham Yacht Club, and Eastern Star. She loved playing the piano and organ and was past Grand Organist for Eastern Star. She needed little coaxing to sit down and play whenever there was a piano or organ. She also enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe and to the orient. She is survived by her daughter Angela and husband Dean Olson of Snohomish, WA, son Jeffrey Haws and wife Marjie of Arlington, WA, step-son Donald Marten and wife Tillie of Santa Rosa, CA, step-daughter Leslie and husband Sid Nesbit of Bellingham, WA grandchildren Leif, Erika and Peter Olson, Pamela Robbins, Preston Myers, and Morgan Haws, Mark and Eric Marten, Doug Nesbit, Mike Diehl great grandchildren, Steven Markholt, Kayla and Cassandra Robbins, Sam, Max, Gus and Delaney Diehl, and Blaine and Tessa Nesbit, and many nieces and nephews all over the country. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 15th from 12-5 p.m. at Westford Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Westford Funeral Home Chapel with a reception following across the street at Westford's Broadway Hall. Marten, Seattle, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Acacia Funeral Home with burial in Acacia Memorial Park, Seattle. A mechanic at the Bloedel Donovan mill from 1924 to 1944, Mr. Marten died Wednesday, (April 2, 1975). Survivors include his widow, Vera; a daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Netten of Blaine; a son Donald of Bellingham; three brothers, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
MARTENS, Bonnie A., age 61, of Route No. 1, Custer, passed away in a local hospital, Monday, September 18, (1950). Mrs. Martens had resided in this community for the past eight years and was a member of the First Baptist Church and also the Lake Padden Home Demonstration Club. Surviving relatives are her husband, Earl A., at home; three sons, Donald E., of Ferndale, Wesley H., of Custer and Randal[l] E. of Sumas; four daughters, Mrs. Margaret M. Allen, of Bellingham, Mrs. Jean A. Imel, of Rapid City, S.D., and Mrs. Carol J. Belkle and Mrs. Harriet Robinson, both of Bremerton, also 15 grandchildren. The remains rest at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth where services will be conducted Friday, September 22, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John E. Parrott officiating. MARTENS, Earl A., age 73, who resided at Route 1, Custer, passed away on Friday, October 27, (1961) at Windon, Minnesota, where he was visiting. Mr. Martens resided in Bellingham for the past 20 years and he was associated with the Morse Hardware Company until his retirement. He was a member of the Bellingham Bay Lodge No. 44, F.&A.M., Nile Temple of the Shrine, Sentinel for Sehome Chapter No. 17 O.E.S. and the Scottish Rite Bodies. He leaves to survive his wife, Mrs. Minnie Martens, 3 sons, Wesley H., Randall E. of Bellingham & Donald E. of Oregon, 4 daughters, Mrs. Margaret Allen, Mrs. Jean Stewart both of Bellingham, Mrs. Carol Belkle, Mrs. Harriet Robinson, both of Bremerton, 1 brother, Cloyd Martens of Minneapolis, Minnesota, also 29 grandchildren. Dr. Stuart P. Benson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will conduct funeral services, and ritualistic services will be conducted by the officers of Sehome Chapter with Mr. Vernon Kuney directing the choir, on Monday November 6, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home. MARTENS, Flora, age 88, passed away on January 25, 2005 after a brief illness. A Memorial of her life will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2935 Birchwood Ave., Bellingham, on Monday, January 31st at 7:00 p.m. Flo was born into a large family, the youngest daughter of Rosine Paul and William Beaumont Travis. The Travis Family's Homestead was in a small community outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. At the age of 16, she left the family home to work as a nanny and caretaker in Vancouver, B.C. Flo met her husband, Harvey Howard Martens there, at a logging camp nearby where she worked as a waitress. They were married in Bellingham, WA on May 15, 1943. As a couple, they took care of Howard's parents prior to purchasing a farm on the Noon Road. They were united in the studies of the Bible and chose to become Jehovah's Witnesses in the early 1950's. After Howard was injured at work, Flo was his loving support and caretaker. She also worked the farm, sewed at a local garment factory, and was involved in the house-to-house ministry as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Before Howard's death in 1991, they sold the farm. After his death, she moved into a close-knit neighborhood in Ferndale. She enjoyed working in her garden and visiting with neighbors. She remained a part of the Bellingham Congregation. She was a supportive, good friend to numerous people. Flo's faith in the resurrection onto a Paradise earth, where she would be reunited with Howard and her family, was strong until the end. Flo was preceded in death by her parents, and all her brothers and sisters. She is survived by nieces, nephews and close friends. Greenacres|Moles Funeral Home & Cemetery.

Mr. Martens, a sawmill sawyer, died Wednesday (March 20, 1991) at St. Joseph Hospital South Campus. Burial will be in Greenacres Memorial Park. He was born Jan. 8, 1918, in Edmonton, Alberta, and married Flora Travis 48 years ago. He was a Whatcom County resident for 50 years and was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include his wife Flora Martens of the family home; a brother, Donald Martens of Edmonton; a sister, Nan Lightfoot of Kelowna, B.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Greenacres Funeral Home.

MARTENS, Mary Ida, age 90, passed away April 25, (1967) in a Lynnwood nursing home. Mrs. Martens had been a resident of Bellingham for over 60 years prior to moving to Lynnwood. She was a member of the Church of the Assumption, Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, Clara Barton Society No. 41, Ladies of the GAR and also the Third Order of St. Dominic. She leaves to survive 1 brother George Hoff of Mount Vernon and 1 sister-in-law, Lillie Hoff of Lynnwood. Also several nieces and nephews. Prayer services will be held in the chapel of Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home Thursday evening at 7:30. Requiem Mass will be celebrated Friday at the Church of the Assumption at 10 a.m. with Father Hanley celebrant, Interment Bay View Cemetery.

Mr. Martens had resided in this community for the past seven years and had attended the First Baptist Church. Surviving relatives are the widow, Catharine, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Lula Ramsey, of Bellingham, and Mrs. Eleanor Lightfoot, of Langley Prairie, B.C.; four sons, Harvie and Leonard, of Bellingham, Clarence B., of Port Moody, B.C., and Donald, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; also nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. MARTENS, Peter C. - Funeral services for the Rev. Peter C. Martens, 73, a retired farmer and minister, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Birch bay Mennonite Brethren Church, with the Rev. Lloyd Pankratz officiating. Burial will follow at Greenacres Memorial Park. Martens, 6503 Malloy Road, Ferndale, died Wednesday, (June 21, 1989) in Bellingham. Born March 19, 1916, in Fairview, Okla., he married his wife, Ella, July 28, 1940. Martens moved to Whatcom County three decades ago to serve as minister at Whitehorn Mennonite Brethren Church. In 1959, he graduated with a master's degree from San Anselmo Theological Seminary, in San Anselmo, Calif. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary E. Siemens of Abbotsford, B.C., and Joan L. Baerg of William Lake, B.C.; two sons, Peter R. Martens of Snohomish and Kent D. Martens of Blaine; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four brothers in Fairview; and two sisters in Fairview. MARTENS, Peter John, age 79 years, who resided at 3031 Northwest Ave., passed away as the result of a heart attack on Thursday, Sept. 5, (1967). Mr. Martens lived in Bellingham for the past 42 years and was the retired general superintendent of the Bellingham Stevedor Co. He was a member of the Church of the Assumption; was president of the St. Vincent De Paul Society for 15 years; a member of the Holy Names Society; Past Grand Knight of the Fourth Degree Order of Knights of Columbus; also a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic. He leaves to survive his wife, Mary I. Martens at the family residence. Rosary will be recited in the Chapel of the Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home on Sunday, September 8, at 7 p.m. Requiem High Mass will be celebrated in the Church of the Assumption on Monday, Sept. 9, at 9:30 a.m. Final resting place, Bay View Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Robert Selene, Chis Alstad, M. F. Jukes, Frank Ford, Jack Frost, John O'Connor.
MARTENS, Ruth E., 66, of 5549 2nd Ave., Ferndale, died Thursday (March 12, 1987) in a local convalescent home. She was born Feb. 21, 1921 in Palmyra, Pa. She lived most of her life in Whatcom County until 1974, when she moved to Bullhead City, Ariz. She returned to this area last year. She was a retired waitress and member of the Culinary and Beverage Workers Union. Survivors include a son, Don Bergeson of Ferndale, and a daughter, Gerry Sims of Oakland, Calif. At her request there will be no services. Arrangements are pending at Westford Funeral Home.
MARTENS, Wesley H. - Funeral services for Wesley H. Martens, age 69, of 1515 Iowa St. will be Fri., Nov. 30, 1 p.m. at Greenacres Funeral Home, Rev. Leonard C. Ericksen of Central Lutheran Church officiating. Interment Greenacres Memorial Park. Mr. Martens passed away Tues. Nov. 27, 1984. He had been a Bellingham resident for 45 years, was founder of Martens Signs in 1948 and has been retired since 1979. He was a member of the Bellingham Yacht Club and Bellingham Elks Lodge No. 194. MARTENSON, Justice Renghold, age 69 years, of 409 Lakeway, passed away at a local hospital Saturday, August 9, (1952). Mr. Martenseon had resided in Bellingham since 1918 and was a retired cook for the P.A.F. Fisheries, in Alaska. He was a member of the Whatcom Lodge No. 151, F. & A. M.; Bellingham Bay Lodge No. 31, I.O.O.F. and Bay City Encampment No. 23 I.O.O.F. MARTI, Karl R., age 71, of Blaine, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, (1975). A retired real estate and groceryman, he had been a resident of Whatcom County for the past 60 years and had made his home in Ferndale until moving to Blaine 10 years ago. He was a member of Lind Lodge No. 145 F&AM and Ruth Chapter No. 52 OES. Surviving are his wife, Leona; 2 step-sons, Maurice and Brian Neudeck, all of Blaine; 2 step-daughters, July Lee and Patricia Bliss, both of Ferndale; 2 brothers, John of Colville and Sam of Raymond; 2 sisters, Bertha Miller of Tacoma and Anna Screen of Los Angeles, also 6 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Martine was born in Illinois, came West in 1908 and had resided in Whatcom County for the past twenty years. Survivors include two sons, Charles Kendle, Everson, and M. L. Martine, Seattle; a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Phillips, Bellingham; a sister, Anna Utley, Iowa, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 3, at 2 p.m. in the Knapp & Knapp funeral parlors in Lynden with the Rev. Paul R. Campbell officiating. Interment will be in the Lynden Cemetery.
MARTINEAU, Celeste, age 83 of 2124 Queen Street, passed away Sunday, March 26, (1967). Mr Martineau had resided in Bellingham for the past 12 years and was a retired pipefitter and was a member of the Church of the Assumption. He leaves to survive hiw wife, Marie at home, 3 daughters, Mrs. Josephine Gellington and Mrs. Ann Wyant both of Naicom, Sask., Canada, Mrs. Leola Gary of Kent, Washington, 1 son, George of Duncan, B.C., 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Rose LaPointe of Anaheim, Calif., Mrs. Clothil Robert in North Dakota, many other relatives. Rosary will be said Tuesday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Westford Funeral Home. Requiem mass will be offered Wednesday, March 29 at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Assumption. Interment Bay View.
MARTINEN, Esther Lucille, age 51, passed away at the family home 1214 Xenia St. following an extended illness, Friday, June 14, (1959). Mrs. Martinen had been a 21 year resident of this community and was a member of Sehome Chap. No. 17, O.E.S. and a member of the Carpenters Auxiliary, No. 198. Surviving relatives are her husband, O. Arnold, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Janet Pettigrew of Darrington; one grandchild; father, Wilbert Beal of Deming; two brothers, Fred Beal and Lester Beal both of Deming. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services will be conducted Tuesday, June 18, at 1:00 p.m. Final resting place Greenacres Memorial Park.
MARTINEN, Onni Arnold, 73, a former Bellingham resident, died Sunday (Aug. 2, 1981) in Arlington. Born May 26, 1908, at Winlock, he had been a local resident for 30 years before moving to Arlington six years ago. He was a member of Bellingham Bay Lodge, F&AM, and Carpenters and Joiners Union Local 756. He is survived by a daughter, a brother and two grandchildren. At his request, no services will be held. Inurnment will be in Greenacres Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Weller Funeral home, Arlington.

MARTINES, Leonor Graza of Saxon died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1993, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was 76. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Westford Funeral Home in Bellingham. A Christian prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at Westford Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Saxon Cemetery with Sister Mary Thorne officiating. Born April 11, 1917 in Martindale, Texas, she married Pablo Martines in 1935. They moved in 1948 to Washington, where they were long-time residents of Saxon. Mrs. Martines was preceded in death by her husband and by a grandson, Tommy Martines, in 1991. Survivors include sons Joaquin Martines of Midland, Texas, Martin Martines of Saxon and Hipolito Martines of Bellingham; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his father, Hipolito Martines of Bellingham; mother, Marguerite Sherman of Acme; 2 step-sisters, Angela Sherman of Acme and Beckey, Sedro Woolley, WA; grandfather, Alfred Eberli, Acme; grandmother, Leonor Martines of Acme; and numerous other relatives. MARTINEZ, Edward Miguel of Bellingham, WA passed away on Monday, July 4, 2005 in Bellingham. He was 46, born in San Diego, CA on January 29, 1959, to Betty Lou (Lawson) and Manuel Joseph Martinez. Edward was a very intelligent man who loved history and had an extensive collection of military items. He was preceded in death by his mother, and he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Debora Martinez; son Alex Martinez, daughters Monica and Maria, loving granddaughter Aria Nguyen; brother Danny Martinez; and many other relatives. Edward was a very loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed. A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 8th, at Bayview Cemetery. MARTINEZ, Grace L., 92, 5346 Bellaire Way, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1986) in Bellingham. Born April 22, 1894 in Napanee, Ontario, Mrs. Martinez had been a resident of Whatcom County since 1933. She was a member of the United Church of Ferndale, the Ferndale Garden Club and the Ferndale Senior Citizens Center. Mrs. Martinez was preceded in death by two children, Bernice Pendleton and Douglas McBride. She is survived by her husband Richard of the family home; three sons, Ralph McBride of Sedro-Woolley, and Glen McBride of Bellingham, and Don McBride of Ferndale; 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Ferndale. The Rev. Richard Wyanski will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenacres Memorial Park.

He was 100. Mr. Martinez was born Feb. 7, 1897, in Guadalajara, Spain. An employee of Mobile Oil Co. since 1929, Mr. Martinez was transferred from New York to Ferndale, where he lived for many years. In 1989, he moved to Canada and spent his final years in the company of family and friends. A private memorial service was held Monday, June 23, 1997, at Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale.
MARTINEZ, Vera S., age 78, of 2627 Sunset, passed away Wed., April 16, (1986). Mrs. Martinez had resided in Bellingham for many years and was preceded in death by her husband Greg in June of 1982. MARTINOLICH, John Frank of Portland, Ore., died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1993. He was 88. Services wee to be held at 3 p.m. today at Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes in Portland. His ashes will be scattered over Mount St. Helens and Spirit Lake. Born Nov. 6, 1904, in Bellingham, he lived in Bellingham for more than 30 years. He married Miriam Ruth Place on Nov. 26, 1939, in Seattle. Mr. Martinolich began his motorcycle riding career when he was 15. He later became known as the Old Man of the Mountain because he did not retire from competition until he was 65. He worked as a civilian during World War II at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, training recruits to ride and repair motorcycles. Mr. Martinolich worked as a Davidson motorcycle mechanic for Northwest Cycle in Bellingham in his youth, and later in the 1950s. He also worked for motorcycle shops in Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, Wash. He was a charter member of the American Motorcycle Association, Mount Baker Motorcycle Club, Jolly Rogers Motorcycle Club in Seattle and the Rose City Motorcycle Club in Portland. Mr. Martinolich won five national motorcycle hill-climbing, championships and seven in Western Canada. He received 612 1st place awards in various American Motorcycle Association events, and the the only hill-climber to be sponsored directly by the Harley-Davidson factory. A 50-year resident of Oregon, he was known as "The Oregon Rocket." Survivors include daughter Aurora "Marla" D'Amico of Arlington, Va.; brother Clarence Martinolich of Portland, Ore.; sister Marie Schramm, also of Portland; aunt Edyth Butler of Bellingham; cousins James Francisco of Bellingham and Richard Duncan of Seattle; sister-in-law Beryl Martin of Bellingham; and numerous nieces and nephews.
MARTINOLICH, Miriam Ruth Place - Motorcycle enthusiast Miriam "Mimi" Ruth Place Martinolich, formerly of Bellingham, died Wednesday, March 4, 1992, in a Portland, Ore., hospital. She was 74. She was born July 26, 1917, in Deer Lodge, Mont., to Elford L. and Della May DeMan Place. A resident of Bellingham for 14 years, she graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 grade point average from Whatcom High School. She was a first-class motorcycle ridge, and the first person to be issued a "Motorcycle Only" driver's license in the state of Washington and or the U.S. government. In 1935 she won first place in a stock motorcycle hill-climb against nine men. She married John Martinolich on Nov. 26, 1939, in Seattle. He survives her in Portland where they made their home for the past 47 years. During World War II she was a U.S. government vehicle transporter with the Bonneville Power administration, and a parts clerk at Fort Lewis. Her business career included three years as assistant part manager with Frank Chevrolet in Portland and 20 years as a bookkeeper/accountant at Gentry & Sancher Construction Co. She was the former treasurer of Rose City Motorcycle Club in Portland, and a member of David Douglas PTA and the Multnomah County Council PTA, also in Oregon. Other survivors include her daughter Aurora "Maria" D'Amico of Arlington, Va.; brother Verdun Place of Bellingham; and sisters Helen "Atchie" Quam of Everett, and Sally Reilly of Bellingham. A life-centered memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in The Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes in Portland. Her ashes will be taken to Mount St. Helens. Arrangements are by Gateway Chapel of the Chimes in Portland.

MARTINSEN, Martin T., age 88, of Bow, Wa. passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, (1977) at his home. He was born July 24, 1888 in Egersund, Norway and came to the U.S. in 1905. His marriage to Carrie Johnson took place Nov. 8, 1910 in Bellingham. Mrs. Martinsen died in 1960. Mr. Martinsen was a retired farmer and a member of the Edison Lutheran Church. Surviving are 4 daughters, Mrs. Agnor (Bessie) Nerheim of Walnut Creek, Calif., Mrs. Leonard (Margaret) Omdal of Bow, Ella Lee of Fortuna, Calif., Mrs. Arnold (Alma) Hansen of Burlington; 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter and 1 sister, Beretine Skadberg of Egersund, Norway. MARTINSEN, Mary J. 'Edwards' - Word was received this past week of the death of Mary J. 'Edwards' Martinsen at her home in Olalla, Ore. Dec. 20, 1993. Mary was born to William and Emma Edwards on May 8, 1908 and was raised in the Everson area. She worked as a telephone operator for the Farmers Mutual Telephone Co. at the Nooksack office. Mary later went to Seattle and worked. She married Carl Martinsen and they retired to their home at Olalla. Mr. Martinsen preceded her in death by several years. She is survived by two sisters, Fae Edmison of Lynden and Audrey Thompson of Seattle; a brother, Harman Edwards; two nieces and several cousins. No services wee held at her request.

MARTINSEN, Raymond Richard, age 43, of 1017 Twenty-fourth St., passed away at the family home Tuesday, November 4, (1952). Mr. Martinsen had been a life resident of Bellingham and was employed by the Bellingham Baking Company. He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church and was superintendent of the Ten Mile Sunday School. He was also a member of the General Teamsters Union, Local 231. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Minnie E. Martinsen; four sons, Carl Richard, Elvin James, Paul Edward, and Duane LeRoy; four daughters, Miriam Rae, Janet Arlene, Esther Marie, and Linda Mae, all at the family home; his mother, Mrs. Lizzie Nordquist, of Bellingham; two brothers, Arthur of Bellingham, and Clarence of Blaine; five sisters, Mrs. Mabel Minor, of Bellingham, Mrs. Myrtle Cogdal, of Blaine, Mrs. Martha Anderson of Ferndale, Mrs. Ruth Dilley and Mrs. Emma Wisbey, both in Alaska; a step-brother, E. S. Nordquist, of Bellingham; and many nephews and nieces. The remains rest at the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth where services will be conducted by the Rev. E. M. MARTINSEN, Virginia Olive, age 83 of 2824 Grant St., Bellingham, passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 1989. She was born April 27, 1905 in Galax, Virginia, and had been a Bellingham resident since 1922. Mrs. Martinsen was a licensed practical nurse. She worked for Whatcom County Hospital for 14 years and previous to that had worked at St. Lukes Hospital. She was a member of Calvary Temple in Bellingham. She is survived by 2 daughters, Donna Davis & husband Raymond of Tonasket, WA & Dorothy Schorzman & husband Elmer of Boiling Spring Lakes, N. Carolina; 2 sons, Richard Martinsen & wife Jane of Ferndale, & Wesley Martinsen & wife Ann of Ferndale; sisters-in-law, Mabel Minor of Lynden & Emma Knapp of Redmond, OR; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews & other relatives. MARTINSON, Albert G.- A retired Deming farmer, Albert G. Martinson, 82, died Sunday (22 Oct 1963) in a Tacoma hospital after a long illness. He had lived in the Deming area for 31 years. Surviving are four sons, Anton of Kendall, Lawrence of Sedro Woolley, Elmer and Cleon, both of Bellingham; six daughters, Mrs. Helen Jacobus and Mrs. Laura Steiner of Vancouver; Mrs. Hazel Hitchcok of Everett, Mrs. Lecy (should be Lucy) Hamilton of Kendall, and Miss Alma Martinson and Mrs. Mary Hickok both of Bellingham, a sister, Mrs. Emma Christensen of Bellingham and 39 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. MARTINSON, Barbara June died peacefully in the loving arms of her family at her home in Napa, CA on Saturday, September 13, 2003 at the age of 77. She is survived by her loving husband, Bernard Alfred and daughters Kimberly Burke and Hillary Burke. Barbara was also the loving mother of Carolyn Burke, deceased in 1994. Born in La Jolla, CA to Nellie M. Dibley-Baker & Harcourt Dibley, Barbara attended University of California at Berkley and Loma Linda University where she studied classical music. She spent her early career years working in San Francisco where she met and wed Bernard Alfred. A significant portion of their married life was spent in Europe where Barbara and Bernie began their family with Kimberly Burke and Carolyn Burke. Barbara was the Executive Assistant to the Editor of the Stars & Stripes, European Edition. Returning to the Bay Area, they completed their family with the arrival of Hillary Burke. Barbara was a passionate advocate of literacy and spent many years amassing books for a small school in the Appalachian Mountains. Realizing that cold and hunger will distract a person from learning to read, along with her thousands of books, she would send chocolates and hand crocheted socks, caps and mittens. A library was named in her honor in the 1970's. Barbara loved animals and leaves behind a legacy of generous contributions to The Humane Society. A classical pianist and organist, gardener and chef, Barbara will be remembered for bringing beauty, grace and order to her family and the world around her. (From The Bellingham Herald, 7 May 1984) Submitted by Merrily Lawson.MARTINSON, Cleon Howard Vernon "Pat" Martinson passed away May 11, 2000, at Stevens Hospital in Edmonds, WA. He was 75. Cleon was born in Wilbur, WA December 8, 1924, to Albert and Ada (Caufield) Martinson. He moved with his family to Haynie, WA in 1930 and then to Deming, WA in 1932. He attended Deming Grade School and graduated from Mr. Baker High School in 1943. He was an avid baseball fan and also played in softball leagues. Cleon started working in the woods at age 17. In 1951 he and his brother Elmer started their own logging company. The Martinson Brothers, where they contracted the same company for 20 years. They then went to Alaska and mined for gold for two years. Cleon then joined the Pile Driver's Union and retired in 1986. Cleon loved his family, his big vegetable garden so he could share, he was thoughtful of everyone and he loved a good joke. Cleon's wife, Mary passed away in March, 2000, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, Tony and Elmer Martinson and to sisters, Helen Clements and Elma Martinson. He is survived by two sons, Vernon Martinson and Loren Martinson both of Bellingham; three daughters, Mary Porter of Belfair, WA, Molli Newton of Moses Lake and Carol Martinson McFarland of Bellingham; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Hazel Cloninger of Everett, Lucy Hamilton of Deming, Laura Steiner and Mary Olivers of Bellingham. A Funeral Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the Deming Log Show Grounds followed burial in the Saxon Cemetery. He was born Dec. 20, 1943, in Port Angeles, but lived in Bellingham from 1961 through 1966, attending Western Washington University, then known as Western Washington State College. He worked during those years at Cablevision in Bellingham. Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Jeff of Seattle; a daughter, Kristin Martinson of Seattle; and a brother, Donald Martinsen (sic) of Bellingham.
MARTINSON, Donna Doreen, age 63, of Nome, Alaska, passed away Wednesday, September 20, 1995, at Providence Hospital, Anchorage, AK. Mrs. Martinson was born March 23, 1932, in Bellingham, WA and was the daughter of Harold and Zelpha (Hickok) Craig. She was raised in Bellingham and graduated from Bellingham High School in 1950. Donna moved to Nome, Alaska in 1975 where she married Elmer E. She passed away in Bellingham, WA on October 28, 1992 at age 95. Mrs. Martinson moved to Bellingham 1912. She graduated from Bellingham High School in 1916 and from the Normal School (WWU) in 1918. On June 18, 1919 she was married to Melvin T. Martinson, a local merchant and founder of Martinson's Women's Apparel. Mr. Martinson passed away November 3, 1980. Mrs. Martinson was a member of Hatusu Temple, Daughters of Nile, Seattle and the Sehome Chapter #17, OES, Zenobia Club, Aftermath Club, American Legion Auxiliary and the Senior Activity Center. She was a former member of the Bellingham Yacht Club and the Bellingham Country Club. She attended Unity Church of Truth. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Esther Martinson of Bellingham; 4 nieces, Charlotte Gay, Janet Wesche, Lloydine Nordtvedt and Carolyn Bren, 1 nephew Clayton Holmes of Bellingham, a niece and nephew of Sioux Falls, S.D. and numerous grand and great-nieces and nephews. MARTINSON, Esther - Visitation for Esther "Babe" (Ferngren) Martinson of Spokane, formerly of Whatcom County, will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Jones-Moles Funeral Home. Born Sept. 11, 1907, to Andrew Alfred and Anna Nickolina (Knutzen) Ferngren in Custer, she attended Custer schools through grade 8 and then helped on the family farm and cared for her blind grandmother, Anna Josephina (Fjaervik) Knutzen. Mrs. Martinson attended Sunrise Baptist Sunday School and Church. In 1929, she moved with her family to Bellingham, where she married Lloyd G. Martinson. In 1993, she moved to Brighton Court Assisted Living in Spokane. Her husband of 58 years and brothers Albert "Bert" and Wilheim Gustav "Bill" Ferngren died previously. Survivors include daughters Charlotte Gay of Mill Creek, Carolyn Bren of Grandview, Jan Wesche of Liberty Lake and Lloydine Nordtvedt of Ketchikan, Alaska; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

MARTINSON, Helen Elizabeth, wife of Tony (David Anton) Martinson, of 5644 Guide Meridian Rd., Bellingham, Died Thursday, Feb. 20, (1986) after severe health problems. A service was held on Monday, Feb. 24, at Ferndale, with Rev. Neil Higbee officiating. Burial at Woodlawn Cemetery was followed by the gathering of friends and relatives at Deming Presbyterian Church. She was born to Adam and May Jackson on Oct. 10, 1918, at Delbourne, Alberta, Canada. When she was three years old, the Jacksons moved to Washington. She graduated from Meridian High School in 1937. (missing text) The couple honeymooned at Chelan, Wash., picking apples to pay their way. They then spent a severe winter in a cabin near Gifford, Wash., where Tony cut and delivered wood to make money in the Depression. They later moved to Cedonia, Wash., to help run an uncle's ranch, and also spent time in logging at Colville. The Martinsons eventually settled in Sedro Woolley. Helen helped start the well child clinic at Deming Grade School. She found clothing for underprivileged children and helped nurses give health checkups. She also enjoyed serving her friends and strangers for 11 years at Martinson's Drive-in. She was active in the Hopewell Homemakers Club. She is survived by her husband, Tony; five sons, Robert, William and wife Connie, James and wife Debbie, Marvin (Bud) and wife Betty and Ronald and wife Gloria; one brother Norman Jackson of Bellingham; three sisters, Mary Gaumer of Lompoc, Calif., Edith Haskell of Winnemucca, Nev., and Ann Tooker of Bellingham; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The sons all live in Whatcom and Skagit Counties, except Robert in Alaska.

John was a very generous man and his greatest pleasure in life was his kids and his grandkids. He also enjoyed boating, crabbing and camping. He held a number of jobs in logging, electronics repair, crude oil inspection and claims analysis. John is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Robert Martinson. John is survived by children, David (wife Rebecca) of Mt. Vernon, WA, Todd Martinson and Heather (husband Donny) Sirmans, both of Bellingham, Kassey, Korry, Mariah and Marshall Martinson all of Sedro Woolley, WA; six grandchildren; and brother Danny (wife Madge) of Durand, MI. Graveside services will be held at Enterprise Cemetery in Ferndale on Wed., Jan. 4, 2006, at 1 p.m. Military Honors will be presented by American Legion Post #7.
MARTINSON, Lawrence O. 'Smokey' Martinson, 82, of 1959 Delvan Hill Road, Sedro Woolley, died Thursday, April 22, 1993. He was born Sept. 11, 1910 in Fleet, Alberta, to Albert and Ada Caulfield Martinson. He moved to Wilbur, Washing in 1924 and to Deming in 1932. Ten years later he moved to Sedro Woolley, where he had lived since. Mr. Martinson worked for many years as a logger and a truck driver. He also maintained a small farm, where he grew fruits and vegetables, which he enjoyed giving to people. He was preceded in death by his first wife, a daughter, a brother and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of the family home; son Larry Martinson of Burlington; daughters Nancy Lauderback of Aloha, Ore. and Judy Oliver of Hoonah, Alaska; brothers Elmer Martinson of Nome, Alaska, and Cleon Martinson of Mountlake Terrace; sisters Hazel Cloninger of Everett, Lucy Hamilton of Kendall and Laura Steiner and Mary Olivers of Bellingham; numerous grandchildren; and other relatives. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Lemley Funeral Chapel in Sedro Woolley with burial in Sedro Woolley Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Lemley Funeral Chapel in Sedro Woolley.

MARTINSON, Vernon Lee, age 56, passed away June 16, 2002, from a massive heart attack. He was born August 29, 1945, to Cleon and Maxine (Hanson) Martinson. He graduated from Mt. Baker High School and worked for Milky Way and LTI. Vernon also served in the National Guard and enjoyed golfing and showing hot rods. Vernon was preceded by his father Cleon Martinson in 2000 and is survived by his mother and stepfather, Maxine M. and Brad N. MARVETZ, Esther Natalie - A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Saxon Cemetery for former Bellingham resident Esther Natalie Karb Marvetz, 71, of Cottage Grove, Ore. She died March 6, 1992 at her home. She was born April 3, 1920 in Jetmore, Kansas to Phillip and Mary Catherine Karb. At age 18, she moved with her parents to Whatcom County and attended Mount Baker High School. She married Harold Marvetz in January 1942 in Seattle. Mrs. Marvetz was employed at Lowman's during World War II and at Everson Cannery. She enjoyed sewing. Survivors include her husband, Harold, of the family home; a son, Phillip Marvetz of Harrisburg, Ore.; five sisters, Mollie Eiring of Salina, Kansas, Anna Plummer and Lydia Quint of Garden City, Kansas, Olinda Ellis of Janson, Kansas, Irene Hubbard of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother, Henry Karb of Tenino; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Maria and Bertha, and two brothers, Alex and Alvin. She was a member of the Nazarene Church of Cottage Grove for 12 years and served as the church's "Sunshine Secretary" for six years. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jones-Moles Funeral Home. Rev. Patrick Conway will officiate during the graveside service. Arrangements are by Jones-Moles Funeral Home.
MARVETZ, Harold Lester, born May 13, 1921 in Iowa, passed away April 5, 2009 in Bellingham, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents Lester and Anna (Bennett) Marvetz; and his wife Ester (Karb) Marvetz. Harold is survived by his son, Phillip Marvetz, Grandson Phillip Marvetz, Jr.; sisters Beulah Jaschke from Minnesota, Nellie Clemons from Bellingham, and Audrey Arnott from Nevada; granddaughter Chrystal Marvetz and 2 great grandsons. A retired farmer, Mr. Marvetz had resided in Whatcom Co. for 33 yrs. He is survived by his wife Anna. 2 sons; Lyle Marvetz of Gainsville, Georgia & Harold Marvetz of Cottage Grove, Ore. 4 daughters, Mrs. Beulah Jaschke of Eagon, Minnesota, Mrs. Bill (Jessie) Hamilton of Seattle, Mrs. Gene (Audrey) Arnott of Beuena Park, CA. & Mrs. Robert (Nellie) Clemons of Acme. 1 sister, Mrs. Lee McLaughlin of Moore, Montana. 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren & numerous neices & nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Fri. April 6th at 1 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home, burial will follow at Saxon Cemetery.
MARVIN, Anne Mary, age 81 of Bellingham, died June 14, 1998 at Bellingham Health Care. She was born April 27, 1917 in Wadena, Saskatchewan, Canada to Ignatius and Mary (Yamnuik) Kwitkowski. Mrs. Marvin graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and completed her Registered Nurse schooling at St. Anthony Hospital "The Pas" in Manitoba, Saskatchewan. Anne married Daniel Marvin April 10, 1950 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. They lived in Mount Vernon, WA, for 23 years and moved to Whatcom Co. in 1977. She was a member of the Assumption Church, St. Dominic's Circle, Catholic Daughters of American and Bellingham Senior Center. Preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Marvin; brother, Tom Kwitkowski; and sister, Kay Kuzyck. Survivors include her sons, David Marvin of Oceanside, CA, Douglas Marvin of Tokyo, Japan, John Marvin of Bellingham, WA; daughter, Susan Marvin of Glen Cove, NY; brothers, Nick Kwitkowski of Oliver, B.C., Ed Kwitkowski of Cranbrook, B.C.; a sister, Pearl Dobko of Vancouver, B.C.; one granddaughter, Deirdre Cody; one great-granddaughter, Jaselyn Cody; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A prayer vigil will be held at Westford Funeral Home 7:00 p.m. Thursday and the Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 19, 1998 at Church of the Assumption. MARVIN, Racheal T., 95, of Stanwood, died Sun. April 9, (1989) in an Arlington hospital. She was born Dec. 19, 1893 in Pender, Neb. Racheal attended school for many years earning her teaching degree from Michigan State, her bachelors Degree in Art from Seattle Pacific College and went on to do some graduate work at the University of Miami. Her early teaching was in Mt. Vernon & Raymond, Wa. where she taught elementary school. Most of her teaching career was spent teaching in a private school in Orlando, Florida, where she taught English & Greek. Reachael leaves 11 nieces & nephews: David Quall of Mt. Vernon, Dean Quall of Seattle, Joe Quall of Seattle, Clara Eardly of Everett, Miriam Baker of Marysvillle, Phillip Quall of Monroe, Racheal Prigg of Snohomish, John Quall of Iowa, Florence Tunks of Mt. Vernon, Alvin B. Quall of Spokane & Velnora McAfee of Bellingham, numerous grandnieces & grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Rev. L. J. Marvin and 1 sister Clara Quall. Memorial services will be held during the 11 a.m. Sunday morning church services April 16 at the Warm Beach Free Methodist Church, Stanwood with refreshments & fellowship to follow the service.
MARX, Eva P. - Services for Eva P. Marx, 86, a member of Faith Lutheran Church, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Westford Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dick Christensen officiating. Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. today at Westford Funeral Home. Mrs. Marx, 2400 Samish Way, died Monday, (May 8, 1989) in Bellingham. She was a homemaker. She was born March 5, 1903, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Survivors include two sons, Benjamin Marx of Goldendale and Ronald Marx of Seattle; three daughter, Marjorie DenHartog of Bellingham, Hazel Stull of Arizona and Thelma Moody of St. Paul, Minn.; two sister, Hazel Foline of Bakersfield, Calif., and Opal LaBreash of Minneapolis; one brother Norman House of Camano Island; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 29 great-great-grandchildren.
MARZ, Frank X., age 80 years, of 1313 High Street passed away suddenly at the family home Thursday, November 11, (1948). Mr. Marz had been a resident of Whatcom County for the past fifty-nine years and was a retired grocer. He was a member of the Church of the Assumption and the Holy Names Society. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Amanda M. Marz; one daughter, Mrs. Irene Inhof, city; one son Francis Marz, of Bremerton; one granddaughter, Patricia Marz, of Bremerton; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Sievi, of Route 3, Bellingham, Mrs. Anna Pitsch, of Bellingham, and Mrs. Rosalia Schmitt, of St. James, Minn.; also many other relatives. Rosary will be said Friday evening, November 12 at 7:30 within the Church of the Assumption. Requiem mass will be celebrated Saturday, November 13, at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. John McDonnell officiating. Interment in Bay View Cemetery under the direction of the Westford-Beck funeral home.
