MAPES, Josiah Alvin, aged 80 years, passed away at the family home, Sunday, January 11, (1942) after a long illness. Mr. Mapes had been a resident of Bellingham for the past forty-two years and was employed as a crane man for Bloedel Donovan cargo plant forty years and also a member of the Baptist Church of Missouri. He leaves to survive one son, Jesse A., one daughter, Mrs. Lula Price; two grandchildren, Jesse Jr. and Valley S. Price Jr., all of Bellingham; four brothers and two sisters in the East. Mr. Mapes rests at the Homer Mark Mortuary where funeral services will be held in the Cathedral Chapel Tuesday afternoon, January 13, at 3 o'clock with the Rev. Frank Gillett, pastor of the Eureka Methodist Church officiating. Interment, Bay View Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Alex DuVall, Archie Norris, Frank Talbot, Tony Cooper, Tommy Murphy and Clark Worthington.MAPLES, Douglas L., age 96, of Bellingham, WA, passed away Wednesday September 7, 1994. Born September 2, 1898 in Morgan, Texas to Dr. and Mrs. Lucien Maples, he was a kind and gentle man who was loved by everyone who knew him. He will be terribly missed by all of us. An accountant most of his life, starting in Texas, he kept moving West from New Mexico, Arizona, California, Washington and for a brief time in Alaska. He spent the last 25 years in Seattle before moving to Bellingham in 1991; was an avid collector of bolo ties and was proud of his large collection acquired over several years. Preceded in death by his wife Lois, in 1964, daughter Faye in 1991 and great-grandson, Robert Stanton III in 1991. Survivors include his daughter, Toni Stanton and son-in-law Bob Stanton; four grandchildren, Bob Stanton, Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska, Sharon Comstock of Sutherlin Oregon, Douglas Stanton of Methuen, MA, Michelle Long of Port Angeles, WA; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three nephews, Charles and Earl Rogers both of Seattle, WA, Melvin Rogers of CA. Cremation. His ashes will be taken to Port Angeles, WA as he requested; this area was his most favorite of all the places he lived. A family service will be held at a later date. MARBLE, Eva P., age 95, of Bellingham, WA, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 1997, in Bellingham. She was born in Yakima, WA on October 11, 1901, to Elmer E. and Elizabeth Parks (Gibson) Knowles whose ancestors came to U.S. from England in 1637. A State of Washington Pioneer, she lived in Yakima from 1901 to 1927, subsequently living in Seattle for 13 years and Bellevue for 20 years before moving to Bellingham in 1981. Mrs. Marble was actively involved in the formation of the Bellevue Presbyterian Church and a member of the Birchwood Presbyterian Church in Bellingham. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul after 69 year of marriage. Survived by: 4 children, Robert Bruce Marble of Vancouver, WA, Phyllis J. Dunkak of Bellingham; Paul L. Marble, Jr. and Alan C. Marble both of Beaverton, OR; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 11, 1997 at 2:30 p.m., Birchwood Presbyterian Church with Reverends J. Timothy Lann and O. M. (Bud) Lee officiating. MARBLE, Paul L., age 94, of 3115 Squalicum Parkway, passed away Thurs. Dec. 21, 1989. Born in Colby, Kansas to parents whose ancestors came to United States in 1790 from England, also State of Washington pioneers; lived in Yakima from 1902 to 1927, in Seattle area 13 years, moving to Bellingham in 1981; was a successful builder & contractor in the Bellevue area and a talented artist. Leaves his wife, Eva Knowles Marble; 4 children, Robert Bruce Marble of Vancouver, WA, Phyllis J. Dunkak of Bellingham, Paul L. Marble Jr. of Portland, OR and Alan C. MARCH, Charles Logan, age 79, of 2733 McLeod Rd., passed away Sat., Sept. 4, (1976). A resident of this community for the past 31 years, Mr. March was a retired self-employed carpenter and a WWI USN Veteran. Surviving wife, Freda; 2 sons, Kenneth March of Bellingham and Gene March of Deming; 2 sisters, Mrs. Kate Hartz of Arlington and Mrs. Helen Allen of Port Townsend; 4 grandchildren. MARCHISIO, Richard E., 72, founder, former CEO & Chairman of Efficiency Inc. of Seattle, died of lung cancer Oct. 29, 1993. Upon retirement he served as a volunteer for SCORE. He was a graduate of Cornell University & a Marine Corp officer in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Jocelyn & family, Julie & Grant Richardson, Suzanne Marchisio & Brian Howard, all of Bellingham; James Marchisio of Seattle & 6 grandchildren. A devoted husband & loving father, he enjoyed boating fishing & was a chief extraordinare (sic). A remembrance gathering will be held at his home in Bellevue on Sat., Nov. 6, 1993.
MARCHANT, Irene Haggen - Graveside service for Irene Haggen Marchant, age 83, of 1509 E. Victor St., will be Fri. Jan. 23, 1 p.m. at Bayview Cemetery with Rev. Leonard C. Ericksen, Central Lutheran Church, officiating. Mrs. Marchant passed away Tues. Jan. 20, 1987. Born May 22, 1903, she was a member of the Lutheran Church; resident of Bellingham since 1984; attended Bellingham Normal School, receiving her teaching degree; active in Orthopedic Guild, Kirkland, WA; volunteer helper in Bellevue Schools; active member of Santa Cruz Stroke Club; Officer in Democratic party. She was the widow of Edward A. Marchant and is survived by 1 daughter, June Delores Aries of Kirkland; grandson, Henry Edward Aries; great grandchildren, Heather Aries, Shannon Aries, Lisa Aries & Brian Louis Aries; 1 sister, Louise Burger; 2 brothers, Howard Haggen & Gilbert Haggen; 2 sisters-in-law, Dorothy Haggen & Elisabeth Jones; many nieces & nephews. MARCHANT, Ronald A., 81, a former Lynden-area resident, died Monday (Jan. 11, 1988) in Wenatchee, where he had moved last September. He was born Aug. 28, 1906, in Burlington, and moved to Whatcom County in the early 1920s. He married his wife Ruth on March 19, 1938. They farmed for many years near Pangborn Road northeast of Lynden. Mr. Marchant attended Clearbrook Lutheran Church and was a member of Northwood Grange, Lynden Camels Club and the former Lynden Eagles Club. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Sharon Parker of Wenatchee and Irene Martin of Eagle River, Alaska; and six grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Gillies Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Leaf officiating. Burial will be in Greenacres Memorial Park.

Marchant, 82, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Gillies Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Marchant, formerly of 200 Grover St., Lynden, died Wednesday (Dec. 21, 1988) in Wenatchee. She was born June 22, 1906 in Mandan, North Dakota and was a long-time resident of Whatcom County. She married Ronald Marchant on March 29, 1938 in Whatcom County. He died earlier this year. Mrs. Marchant and her husband farmed in the Pangborn area for years and moved to Wenatchee in 1987. She was a member of the Clearbrook Lutheran Church, the Northwood Grange and the Lynden Senior Center. She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Parker of East Wenatchee and Irene Martin of Eagle River, Alaska; two sisters, Alta Melarvie of Bismarck, ND, and Alice Jacobson of Wenatchee; and six grandchildren. The Rev. John Leaf will officiate at the services. Burial will be at Greenacres Memorial Park.
(From The Bellingham Herald, 23 Dec 1988) Submitted by Merrily Lawson.MARCHBANKS, Marvin, Dr., former superintendent of the Blaine School District, died last week (Dec. 24, 1982) in the Tri-cities area, where his parents live. Marchbanks was superintendent in Blaine from 1974 to 1977. He then took a position as superintendent of schools in another Washington school district and later served as a superintendent in a school district in Nevada. Marchbanks received his Ph.D. in Education from Washington State University in 1974. He had previously served as high school principal in Moses Lake and had taught school in the Yakima area.

He was a Veteran of the Navy during Viet Nam. He was a graduate of WWU 1975. He leave to survive his parents Mr. & Mrs. Philip C. Marchese of Yalesville, Connecticut; 1 sister, Marion Zambory of Wallingford, Connecticut; 1 brother, Richard A. of Yalesville. Mr. Marchese remains were forwarded to New Haven, Connecticut by the Westford Funeral Home where services are pending.
MARCIN, Allegra G. - A funeral for Allegra G. Marcin, formerly of Bellingham, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Olympic Funeral Home in Tumwater. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Olympic Funeral Home. Burial will be in Olympic Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Marcin died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1993, in Centralia. She was 77. Born Dec. 11, 1915, to August and Freida Johnson Anderson in Bellingham, she lived here many years. She married Frank Marcin in Bellingham in 1935. Mrs. Marcin worked as a care provider for 15 years in Bellingham for various people in their homes. She also was a live-in housekeeper in Olympia. She was preceded in death by her husband and her two brothers. Survivors include daughter Kate Morales of Olympia; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
MARCINIAK, Bonita Ethel - A funeral service for Mrs. Bonita Ethel Marciniak, age 80, was conducted today, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Gillies Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Slater officiating. Private burial followed. Mrs. Marciniak, 8717 Line Rd., Lynden, passed away at her home on Sunday, Sept. 11, 1988. She was born in Wilbur, Wash. to Thomas and Cora Boyes on March 21, 1908. She graduated from South Gate High School in South Gate, Calif. where she was the first queen of South Gate and in later years helped build the high school and other buildings in the area. On April 25, 1937 she was married to husband, Martin, and they continued to live in South Gate until Mr. Marciniak's death in 1962, after which she moved to Downey, Calif. She was employed by Decorama, a home decorating service, as a direct sales manager, and became the West Coast regional sales manager, a position she held until her retirement at the age of 70. In 1981 she moved to Lynden to be near her daughters and grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters, Donna Thompson and Shirley Martin and husband Danny, all of Lynden; a sister, Mrs. Izorah and husband Don Fletcher of Hemet, Calif.; six grand- and three great-grandchildren; two nieces and four nephews in California. Funeral services were under the direction of Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.

She was born Jan. 26, 1960 in Bellingham. She was actively involved with girls' basketball, baseball and volleyball teams at Meridian High School, graduating in 1978. She attended Central Washington University and married David Marcoe of Seattle in 1982. She is survived by her husband David of the family home in Seattle; her parents, Doyle and Roberta Kortlever of Lynden; one brother, Brad and his wife Noel Kortlever of Everson; grandparents, Monroe and Therma Johnson of Everson; and numerous other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Greenacres Funeral Home, 5700 Northwest Road, Ferndale, with Father Killian officiating. Cremation was handled by Greenacres Crematorium with interment at Greenacres Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Greenacres Funeral Home.

She was born May 25, 1925, in North Dakota. Mrs. Marcott and her husband, Lynn, owned My Office Tavern in Vallejo, Calif., and managed the American Legion Post No. 104 in California. She enjoyed fishing and playing bingo. Survivors include daughter Karen Lindner of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, son Steve Marcott of Sacramento, Calif., numerous brothers and sisters, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Arrangements are by Whatcom Cremation Association.
MARCOTULLIO, Mildred Frost, 80, of Concord, Calif. passed away Friday July 16, 1993 after a long illness. She was born to William and Jessie Frost on Feb. 9, 1913 and grew up in the South Pass area. She attended South Pass Grade School and Nooksack High School and graduated from Mount Baker High School in 1931. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband James. She is survived by a brother, Ralph Frost and wife Margarette of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; a sister, Celia Dickey of Kirby, Ore., several nieces and nephews. No services were held, There was cremation and burial was in Greenacres Memorial Park.

Mr. Marcus had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 34 years, and was operator of a tailor and clothing shop. He was a member of the Congregation Beth Israel. Surviving relatives include the widow, Jenny at home; three sons, Ben, Harry and Dave, all of Seattle; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Nevins, city; two brothers, Harry in Seattle, and a brother in Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister in San Francisco, Calif., and six grandchildren. MARDESICH, Androw, age 72, of 1108 Taylor, passed away at a local hospital Monday morning, Feb. 20, following a lingering illness. Mr. Mardesich was a retired fisherman and grocer, and had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 36 years. He was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, the Croation Fraternal Union and a life member of the Eagles Lodge, Aerie No. 31. Surviving relatives include a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Elich, of Bellingham; two sons, Chris and John, both of San Pedro, Calif.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Grace Cammack, of Bellingham, and Mrs. Ellen Milosevich, of Monterey, Calif.; one step-son, Joe Spencer, of Bellingham; four grandsons, six granddaughters and four great-granddaughters; one sister, Mr.s Lucria Vidovich, of San Pedro, Calif., and a brother, Antone Mardesich in Yugoslavia. Rosary will be said Thursday, February 23, at 8 p.m. within the Church of the Sacred Heart. Requiem high mass will be sung Friday, February 24, at 9:30 a.m. with the pastor celebrant. MARDESICH, Anthony E. "Tony" age 54 years, of 245 S. Garden, passed away at his home Tuesday, April 1, (1958) following a short illness. Mr. Mardesich had been a lifetime resident of this community and was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart and also a member of the Alaska Fisherman's Union and the Elks Lodge BPOE No. 194. He is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter, Linda at home, a twin brother, Andrew of Everett. Rosary will be said Thursday, April 3, at 8:30 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home. Mrs. Mardesich had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 54 years and was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart. She is survived by two sons, Tony of this city, and Andrew of Everett; two granddaughters, Mrs. Robert McAlpine of Seattle, and Linda Mardesich of this city; one sister, Mrs. Jack Mariani of Cupertino, Calif. Rosary will be said Sunday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home. MARDESICH, Mitchell, age 70, who resided at 311 E. Holly St., passed away in a local hospital, Tuesday, March 22, (1977). He had been a life time resident of Bellingham and was a retired commercial fisherman and a member of the Catholic Church. He leaves to survive 1 daughter, Sandy Mardesich of Los Angeles; 1 sister, Lucille Marincovich of Everett; 2 nieces, Mrs. John Connelly of Everett and Katherine Wilson of Burien. Family rosary will be said Sunday evening in Everett with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated Monday, March 28 at 10 a.m. in the Assumption Catholic Church with Father Patrick Ritter as celebrant. MARDESICH, Nick, age 73, of 921 Thirteenth Street, passed away at the family home late Sunday evening, October 23, (1949) following a lingering illness. Mr. Mardesich was a well known fisherman and was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart. Surviving relatives include his wife, Margaret Mardesich; two sons, Tony of Bellingham, and Andrew of Everett; two grandchildren, Jean and Lynda Mardesich; one sister, Mrs. Winefred Zuanich of Everett; one nephew, Frankie Stonovich, of Bellingham; three nieces and two nephews in San Pedro, Calif., and one brother in Yugoslavia. Rosary was said at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Tuesday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m. Requiem mass was celebrated for the repose of the soul at the church, Wednesday, October 26, at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. John Shaughnessey officiating. Interment in Bay View Abbey, under the direction of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home.
MARDESICH, Nick of San Pedro, Calif., died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1993. He was 75. At his request, no services will be held. Born Nov. 8, 1917, in Bellingham, he worked as a commercial fisherman in Bellingham and later fished off the coasts of North America and South America. Survivors include daughter Marcia Mardesich of San Pedro; brother Emil Mardesich of San Pedro; sister Margaret Stephanson of Bellingham; and first-cousins Pete Zuanich and Catherine Mratinich, both of Bellingham.
MARDESICH, Tony - Funeral arrangements are pending for Tony Mardesich of San Pedro, Calif. He died Thursday (May 28, 1987) in San Pedro from a heart attack. Mr. Mardesich had been a resident of Bellingham for about 19 years. He left Bellingham in 1938. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Stethanson of Bellingham; two brothers, Emil Mardesich and Nick Mardesich, both of San Pedro, Calif.; and two cousins, Kathrine Mratinich and Peter Zuanich of Bellingham.
MARDYLA, John Joseph, 71, 1200 Lincoln Street, died Sunday (May 24, 1987) in Bellingham. Mr. Mardyla was born March 11, 1916 in Detroit. Before moving to Bellingham in 1986 he lived in Lincoln Park, Mich. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 194, Dearborn Moose Lodge of Dearborn, Mich., Allen Park, Mich. Knights of Columbus-Father Saylor Council, and a member of Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Church of Lincoln Park. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara, in 1974, and a brother, Walter Mardyla, in 1977. Mr. Mardyla is survived by a daughter, Darlene Ball of Kansas City, Miss.; a son Edward Mardyla of Lincoln Park; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Holody of Michigan, Frances Holody and Angela Plawecki of Michigan; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. No local services are scheduled. Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will take place in Lincoln Park. Local arrangements were made by Jones Funeral Home.
MARENAKOS, George A. aka George A. Marcus, age 79, of 8014 Beverley Blvd., Everett, passed away in an Everett Hospital Friday, May 20, (1960). Mr. Marenakos had been a resident of this community for 35 years before moving to Everett 10 years ago; was a retired millwright, having worked for the Larson Mill 30 years; and was a member of the Ahepa Lodge. Surviving relatives include a daughter; Mrs. Maxine Murker of Everett; four grandchildren; a sister in Greece; and numerous nieces and nephews, including two nephews in this city; Nick Lambert and George Limperis. MARGITAN, Stephen, age 82, of 1415 Iowa Street, passed away in a local hospital Wednesday, Dec. 29, (1954) following a lingering illness. Mr. Margitan had resided in this county for the past 60 years, and was a well-known retired farmer. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Margitan. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home with Rev. W. Robert Webb, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating. MARICLE, Bernice I. died at her rural Everson home last Saturday, (May 22, 1977). She was 85. Born in Lexington, Ky., she lived 52 years at her East Pole Road residence. Mrs. Maricle was a retired teacher and cannery worker. She had taught at Mount Baker High School. Known as the "Flower Lady," she was a member of the Mount baker Garden Club and the Everson senior citizens group. She tended 225 roses at her home and fulfilled a dream of learning to drive at age 80. She often was seen driving her surrey-topped electric car, delivering roses to senior citizens and shut-ins in the Lynden and Everson areas. She hosted an annual lawn and garden party. Survivors include sons Ralph, James and Theodore, all of rural Whatcom County, and David, of Winnabow, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Private funeral services have been held.
MARICLE, Gail Rene, age 35, of Bellingham, passed away Monday, May 30, 1994. Born July 22, 1958 in Bellingham, Wa. to James and Jean (Trottier) Blair, she was a lifetime Whatcom County resident; graduated from Nooksack Valley High School; married David E. Maricle on August 20, 1976 in Lynden. Gail and David were best friends for 22 years and married for almost 18 years. She enjoyed most of all being a wife and mother to her family. Camping, skiing, gardening and helping others were her favorite things in this life. Gail knew Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour through the revealing of the Holy Spirit and had great peace through that knowledge. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She owned Box Office N.W. Ticket Center for 5 years; worked as a bookkeeper for Chicago/Ticor Title Company of Bellingham; member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church in Sumas; preceded in death by her father, Oct. 1993 and brothers, David Blair, Dec. 1970 and Mark Blair, Oct. 1985. Survived by her husband, David; daughter, Angela Maricle, son, David Maricle, all of the family home; mother, Jean Blair; sister, JoAnn Dykstra, both of Sumas; 4 brothers, Gary Blair of Sumas, Glen Blair of Bellingham, Jim Blair, Jr. and Jon Blair, both of Sumas. MARICLE, Ralph "Bud" age 73, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1988, in a Tacoma Hospital. Bud grew up in Whatcom County and graduated from Mount Baker High School and the University of Washington. A retired overseas executive for Mobil Corp., Mr. Maricle returned to Whatcom County in 1973 following international assignments and travel. He was a life member of the Bellingham Yacht Club, having been instrumental in management affairs of the club. He was an avid "Ham Radio" enthusiast for many years. Surviving are his wife, Jane; three brothers, Dick in North Carolina, Jim and Ted both of Bellingham; one son, Lynn of Olympia; one daughter, Francie in California; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. Memorial services were No. 6, at the Bellingham Yacht Club. Arrangements were by Greenacres Funeral Home.

She was employed by the Niagara Falls Health Dept. as a secretary. She retired and moved to Bellingham in 1987 with her sister Louise Mariglia. MARINCOVICH, Vince, age 56, passed away suddenly on Terminal Island, San Pedro, Calif., Tuesday, December 7, (1948). Mr. Marincovich had been a member of the Fisherman's Union. Surviving relatives include two daughters, Miss Sally Marincovich, Bellingham, and Mrs. Pearl Jenkins, Tacoma; mother, Mrs. Maria Marincovich, Komiza, Dalmatia, Yugoslavia; one sister, Winnifred in Trieste, Yugoslavia; one brother, Mitchell, San Pedro, California. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Assumption, Wednesday, December 29, at 9:30 a.m., under the direction of the funeral home of Harlow-Hollingsworth. MARION, Edna May, age 60, of 436 Baker Street, passed away in a local hospital Tuesday, September 5, (1950). Mrs. Marion had been a resident of this community for the past 52 years and was a member of the Seventh day Adventist Church. Surviving relatives are two sons, Clarence W. McAfee, of Bellingham, and Cecil McAfee, of Ferndale; four grandchildren; two step-sons, Lyle Marion, of Leavenworth, and Earl Marion, of Everett; one brother, Gerald Van Horn, of Olympia, and three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Barker, of Bremerton, Mrs. Hazel Evans, of New York, N.Y., and miss Iris Van Horn, of Anchorage, Alaska. MARION, James Albert, of 577 Alder St., Blaine, died Monday, Dec. 26, 1994, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 61. A private family service will be held. Born March 7, 1933, to Archie and Vera Wahl Marion in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, he owned the James Marion Care Center for mentally disabled adults in Santa Rosa, Calif. He retired six years ago and moved to Blaine to be closer to his mother. Mr. Marion served in the U.S. Air Force in 1955. He enjoyed carpentry, renovating older homes and traveling to such places as Hawaii, Las Vegas and Reno, Nev. Survivors include his mother of White Rock, B.C.; aunts Isabelle Wilson of Blaine, Myrtle Loucks of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Louise Eddy of Blaine; and cousin Linda Roche of Turlock, Calif. MARION, Lawrence, 67, of Sumas died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1994 at his home. Mr. Marion was born July 25, 1927 in Seattle to LeRoy and Edna C. MacKay Marion and had lived in Sumas since 1960. He was a maintenance superintendent for U.S. Customs. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church of Sumas and Disabled American Veterans. He was active in the community with children in younger days and was active in Veteran Affairs. He was a former Seattle firefighter and a Sumas volunteer fireman for 20 years. He was a Sumas Police officer for seven years. He married Lois (Sacksteder) on Dec. 8, 1947 in Seattle. Survivors are his wife Lois of the family home; two sons, Marc Marion and his wife Lynda of Mount Vernon and Tom Marion and his wife Sally of Everson; daughter Renee Olson and husband John of Sultan; one sister in Everett; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at St. Peter's Cemetery with Father Gary Southerton officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the Sumas Post, American Legion. MARIOTTO, Ettore "Ed" age 70, who resided at 1619 Kentucky St., passed away in a local hospital on Wednesday, Feb. 28, (1962) following a lingering illness. Mr. Mariotto was a member of the Church of the Assumption, the Holy Names Society, was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the Carpenter's Union, Local 756. He came to the United States from Italy in April of 1914, having moved to Whatcom County in 1926. He then retired as a farmer and has since resided in Bellingham for the past 16 years. He leaves to survive his wife, Mrs. Catherine Mariotto at the family home; one son, Eilo Frank Mariotto of Bellingham; four daughters, Mrs. Nora Anderson of Seattle, Mrs. Flora Nichols of California, Mrs. Lucy Frederickson of Bellingham and Mrs. Cecelia Glidden of Seattle, also a daughter, Mrs. Clara Ziegler of Michigan who is now deceased; one brother Q. Mariotta of Bellingham, also two sisters, one residing in France and one in Italy; 16 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, also numerous nieces and nephews. Pauline's extended family consisted of many nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews. Pauline was a resident of the Everson area and Bellingham from 1922 til 1979. MARIOTTO, Virginia (Gini) - Oct. 22, 1924 - Oct. 23, 2001 - Virginia (Gini) Mariotto passed away on Oct. 23, (2001) at St. Joseph Hospital. Gini was born to Otis & Mabel Brown Oct. 22, 1924 in Bellingham, WA. She attended Franklin Grade School and was a Majorette at Bellingham High School, graduating in 1942. Early in life, she gave birth to two boys, Larry Fisher now deceased and Terry Fisher now living in Arlington. Both sons served in the Armed Forces. Gini was a very kind, thoughtful, loving person. She loved people and always served people with a smile. She loved flower gardening, music and to travel in her and Franks RV to fish in Alaska and spend winters in Arizona. She was a member of the Elks Lodge, Mt. Baker Rock Club and Christ The King Church. A true Christian, she loved The Lord and wasn't afraid to die knowing she was going to Heaven to be with The Lord.
Gini worked as a grocery clerk for White House Market in Bellingham for many years. She then moved to Seattle and was a clerk for Safeway for 20 years, moving back to Bellingham and helped open Clarks Super Market on James St. She also worked in the cosmetic dept. for K-Mart and retired from WWU. In 1972 she married Frank (Eilo) and she and Frank traveled all over the U.S., including Alaska. Preceded in death by her parents and son Larry, she is survived by husband Frank of the family home son Terry Fisher grandson Jason Fisher brother Darrell & wife Marti Brown step-daughters Randi Hueston & husband Ken and Cheri Mariotto, step-sons Warren Mariotto Hetterley and wife Ann, Lee Mariotto Hetterley and wife Charmaine Allen Mariotto Hetterly and wife Nancy sisters-in-law Flo Nichols, Nora Anderson, Lucy Fredrickson and husband Ivan, Cecelia Glidden twin cousin Florence Abela and husband Frank, nephew Ron Brown and wife Sharon many other family member. MARK, Anna, age 87 years, of Stephens Court, passed away Monday evening, October 13, (1947) in a local hospital after a lingering illness. MARK, Matthew W., age 63 years, of 2732 Humboldt Street, passed away at a local hospital Wednesday morning, October 3, (1945). Mr. Mark had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 45 years and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was also affiliated with the Knights of Pythias, the Bellingham Lawn Bowling Association, and the National Association of Postal Supervisors. He had been employed in the Bellingham Post Office for 40 years, 25 of which he served as assistant postmaster. He was retired from the postal service August 31, 1944. Immediate surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Maude L. Mark; two sons, Charles Mark, M.A.M. 1/c, U.S. navy located at Pearl Harbor, Raymond Mark, of Bremerton; one daughter, Mrs. Francis Trecker, Bellingham; his mother, Mrs. Anna Mark, of Bellingham; one brother, Commander John Mark, U.S. navy, Oakland, California; two sisters, Mrs. Hannah McMurray and Mrs. Margaret Palmer, both of Bellingham; four grandchildren, Marty, Marlene and Diane Trecker and Georgina Mark, of Bremerton. She was born Jan. 5, 1906 in Raymore, Missouri to John and Mayme (Jones) Clendenen and has been a Whatcom County resident for the past 85 years. Prior to marriage, she sang professionally, traveling to many locations in the Western Washington area. She married Chuck Mark on Sept. 2, 1936 in Bellingham and he preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1982. Mrs. Mark was one of the original residents of the Parkway Chateau. She was a past member of the Gooseberry Fire Dept. Auxiliary, the Rural Mail Carriers Union in Bellingham, the American Postal Workers Union Auxiliary Local #709; and worked as a substitute rural mail carrier. Mrs. Mark and her husband traveled extensively by motor home after their retirement. She is survived by all the grateful numbers of people who found her home a warm haven including 2 sisters-in-law, Edith Clendenen and Frances Trecker both of Bellingham; brother-in-law, Raymond Mark and wife Jayne of Fairbanks, AK; and numerous family members. Preceded in death by her sister, Mary LaHammer and brother, Bud Clendenen. A memorial service will be held on Thurs., Oct. 26, 2 p.m. at Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. MARKEL, Elton B., Sr. - Funeral services for Elton B. Markel, Sr., 58, 2417 Queen St., will be conducted by the Rev. Paul Cantelon at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home. MARKEY, Sarah, 40, died on Friday, August 4, 2006 and found peace. MARKHAM, Bert Alvin, age 85, 319 Carolina Street, passed away in a local hospital, Thursday, Oct. 11, (1962). Mr. Markham had resided in Bellingham the past eight years, and prior to that time had resided in Seattle 25 years, where he was employed by the R. L. Polk Directory Co. He graduated from Tri State College, Angola, Ind., in 1902, and Butler College in Indianapolis, Ind., in 1905. Survivors are his widow, Mabel R., at home; two sons, Aaron E. Markham, city; Wilbur A. Markham, Arch Cape, Ore.; four grandchildren; one brother, Charles M. Markahm, Berrien Springs, Mich.; one sister, Mrs. Mabel Drane, Mishawaka, Ind., and nieces and nephews. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services will be conducted by Rev. George Ackley, Monday, Oct. 15, at 4:30 p.m., followed by cremation.
MARKHAM, Eddie, age 83, of Bellingham, WA, passed away Oct. 19, 2008, in Bellingham. Eddie was born Aug. 7, 1925, in Lepanto, Arkansas, to Alvin and Ina (Bryant) Markham. He was owner/operator of Markham Trucking and other occupations included logger, mink farmer, Meridian school bus driver, he worked at Bellingham Cold Storage, and was owner/operator of Eddie's Taxi Service in Arkansas. Eddie enjoyed latch hook, cutting horses, camping trips and trips to Reno playing "Betty Boop." He loved Cadillacs, and his miniature sheltie, Candy, who preceded him in death. His CB handles were "The Stranger" and "Fast Eddie." He was a Navy veteran of WWII. Eddie's memberships included VFW, Elks, Sheriff's Posse (mounted group), and was a 4-H leader in Whatcom County. Surviving Eddie are his wife, Marge Markham at the family home; daughters, Barbara (Bill) Gookins of Marysville, WA, Patty (Jack) Maddox of Wapato, WA, and Peggy (Allen) Pratt of Bellingham; grandchildren, Robbie Diaz of Burien, Kelly Diaz of Marysville, Sharon (Bruce) Paul of Sunnyside, Charlie (Faye) Maddox of Lima, Mt, and Sandy (Steve) Changala of Wapato; great grandchildren, Alex Diaz of Burien, Hayden Hollenbeck of Marysville, Jacob and Jessica Changala of Wapato, and Averi Alaine Maddox of Lima, MT; and nephew Gary Roberts of Missouri. Eddie was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Pauline Roberts and Juanita Williams. Markham, Sr., age 75, who passed away in a Bellingham hospital on Tuesday, March 15, 1988, were conducted on Thursday, March 17 at 2 p.m. in the Nooksack Valley Baptist Church with Rev. John Ruhlman officiating. Burial followed in Nooksack Cemetery. Mr. Markham, 3720 Sorenson Rd., Everson, was born in Louisiana, Missouri, on March 16, 1912. On April 30, 1932, he was married to his wife, Lucille, in Quincy, Ill. In 1949 they moved with their family to Sumas and for many years Mr. Markham was employed as a janitor for the Nooksack Valley School District. He was a member of the Nooksack Valley Baptist Church and the Sumas Lions Club, and was active in many Sumas civic affairs. He is survived by his wife, Lucille; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann and husband Wayne Sorenson of Everson; a son, Harold B. Markham Jr. and wife Carolyn of Sumas; seven grand- and seven great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Grace Warner of Bremerton; and numerous other relatives.
MARKHAM, Lucille Alma, of Lynden, passed away in the Lynden Rest Home on Friday, June 2, 1989 at the age of 76. She was born in Quincy, Ill. on January 22, 1913 to Allan and Mary Ann Warner. She was married to Harold B. Markham, Sr. on April 30 1932 in Quincy and together they came to Whatcom County in 1949. Mr. Markham preceded her in death in 1988. Lucille loved gardening and flowers. She was very active in the American Cancer Society, the local Republican Party work and the County Orthopedic Guild. She participated in the Sumas school lunch program and was a Church youth leader for a number of years for Nooksack Valley Baptist Church. Mrs. Markham is survived by 1 daughter, Mary Ann Sorenson and husband Wayne of Bellingham; 1 son, Harold B. Markham, Jr. and wife Carolyn of Sumas; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; brother Paul Warner and wife Grace of Bremerton. She was preceded in death by a brother Roy Warner. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday June 6, 1989 at Nooksack Valley Baptist Church with Rev. John Ruhlman officiating. Interment will follow at Nooksack Cemetery. Services are under the care of Gillies Funeral Home of Lynden.
MARKHAM, Vilas, 96, a forty-five year resident of Bellingham, has died in Auburn, California. She was born in Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School there and Washington State (College) in Pullman. A highlight of her childhood was two years in Hawaii during World War I where her father was stationed in the Army. The family moved to Seattle in the thirties and built a house she designed. She joined the Seattle Mountaineers and hiked and climbed in mountains all over the West. She met her husband, Aaron, in the Mountaineers, and they were married in 1941. After two years in York, PA, where their first daughter was born, they returned to Seattle and had their second daughter. In 1952 the family moved to Bellingham, living on Lake Whatcom's north shore for 34 years. She was active in the Silver Beach Community Church for many years. Her faith was very important to her, and she and her husband made several trips to the Holy Land. After her husband died in 1986, she cared for her mother until she was 100 years old. During her last eight years in Bellingham, she lived at the Willows Retirement Community, where she took voice lessons. After her stroke in 1997 she moved to California to live with her daughter. All her life she enjoyed needlework, gardening, reading, music and keeping up with her extended family. Unable to read music after her stroke, she focused on playing music by ear, a gift she had all her life. She was cheerful and positive and enjoyed playing the piano in the nursing home until recently. She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Claire and George Scranton of Seattle and Jennifer and Robert Owens of Auburn, CA. Her grandchildren are Rachel Schoonmaker and husband Kevin of Wheaton, IL, Daniel Owens and wife Heather, serving as missionaries in SE Asia, Trever Scranton and wife Ann of Seattle, and Lindsey Scranton of Seattle. She has a great-grandson, David Schoonmaker, in Illinois, age 2. There will be a memorial service in Seattle at the Scranton home Saturday, April 17th at 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., April 19th at Greenacres Memorial Park, 5700 Northwest Road, Ferndale, with coffee to follow. MARKHART, Neal H., 86, Yakima, former Bellingham resident, died Wednesday May 27, 1992 in Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, Yakima. Mr. Markhart was born in Bellingham, WA on April 28, 1906 to Bales and Veda (Reid) Markhart and was raised and educated there. On July 11, 1947 he was married to Myrtle Hansen in Seattle, WA and then moved to the Tillamook, OR area where they resided for 26 years. Neal was employed by the Oregon-Washington Sawmill in Garibaldi, OR until his retirement in 1971 when they moved to Yakima. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Markhart of Yakima; two brother, Lyle Markhart and Clifford Markhart both of Allen, WA and seven nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 Thursday June 4 at Bayview Cemetery, Bellingham. Keith & Keith Funeral Home, Yakima, is in charge of arrangements.

MARKKANEN, Siri, age 45 years of 1522 Thirty-fifth Avenue, Seattle, passed away following a lingering illness, Monday, January 28, while visiting in Bellingham. Miss Markkanen was a physicist and a laboratory technician. Private services were conducted from the Chapel of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home, followed by cremation.

MARKO, Robert, age 62 years, beloved husband of Mrs. Seima Marko, 3204 Peabody Street, passed way at the family residence, Sunday, February 18, (1945) after a brief illness. Mr. Marko had been a resident of Whatcom county for the past 25 years and had recently been in the employ of the City Water department. Surviving relatives include, beside the widow, two sisters, Mrs. Marie Fitzsimmons, of Santa Cruz, and Mrs. Emma Lisk, of Sacramento; also a step-father, Mr. Matthew Marko, of Modesto, Calif. MARKS, Hattie O., age 78, of 1700 James Street, passed away at her home Sunday morning, January 15, (1950) following an extended illness. Mrs. Marks had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 30 years. MARKUSEN, Richard Harlow, age 68 of Blaine, WA died at home on Sunday, May 16, 2003. He was born to John and Mary (Melseth) Markusen on February 24, 1935 and grew up on the farm at Pt. Whitehorn, WA. Dick graduated from Blaine High School in 1953. He then married Ruth Finkbonner in 1954. Dick was a commercial fisherman throughout his entire life fishing the waters of Southeast Alaska and throughout Puget Sound. He is survived by his son Brad Markusen and wife Sundie of Blaine; his two daughters Teena Markusen and Jana Markusen of Blaine; stepson Hale Hardt of Blaine; grandchildren Austin Markusen of Blaine, Cain Spaulding of Bellingham, Asialee Hill of Santa Monica, CA, Cole Markusen of Blaine and Axl Markusen of Blaine; great-grandchildren, Mariah and Journee Markusen of Branson, MO and River and Dalee Markusen of Blaine; sister Joanne Barnes and husband Darrell of Lynden; brother Kenneth Markusen and wife Pam of Blaine; numerous cousins nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his brother, Ronald Markusen, wife, Ruth and son David Markusen. Mrs. Markworth had been a resident of this community since 1919, was a member of the Church of the Assumption, a past president of the North American Association, past president of Bellingham WWI Auxiliary, past chief of Bellingham Pythian Sisters, organizer and past advisor of the Bellingham Pythian Sunshine Girls, charter member, past president and past mother of Bellingham Eagles Auxiliary No. 31, charger member of the Catholic Daughters of America, San Diego, Calif., past president of VFW Chula Vista, Calif., past commander, state chaplain and past president of Western Washington Bellingham Club 848, Past Presidents Club of Navy Mothers Club of America, member of the Senior Citizens Activity Center and Rebekah Lodge No. 43. Surviving son, Carl G. Markworth of Springfield, Oregon; 6 grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Agnes Johnson of Seattle; 2 brothers, Thomas McMahon of Seattle and Edward R.
