MAHLBERG, Dick, age 80 and a sixty-year resident of Bellingham, passed away unexpectedly on Tues., August 19th, 2003. He was born April 9, 1923 to Blanche and Louis (Lars) Mahlberg in Olympia, WA and grew up in Tacoma before moving to the Bellingham area. The chapters to Dick's rich and adventurous life are a result of his numerous passions. He was a proud member of the Army's 10th Mountain Division and served in the Italian Alps as a ski trooper during WWII. As a highly accomplished pilot, he loved flying bush charters in Alaska and Western Canada. His over 40,000 hours of flight time included passengers from celebrities to beluga whales. He was a daring, lifelong skier (Targhee powder was his favorite). Those who went out with him weren't always warned that his style was "straight down, all out, all day!" Dick was also a skilled sailor who enjoyed his many sailboats, first by racing and later with cruising the San Juans and British Columbia. Being the eternal optimist and never one to pass on a new adventure, his business enterprises included owning three local gas stations, starting Bellingham Seattle Airways, being co-owner of Mount Pilchuck Ski Lodge and working as an agent for Massey Real Estate. His last enterprise, before retiring, was 17 years as co-proprietor, with Ellen Peters, of Bellhaven Marine Charters and Hunter Boat Sales. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Mahlberg daughter Constance Mahlberg of Seattle WA daughter Carol Garcia, with husband Steve and son Torrey of Walden NY. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Scott, in 1960. Dick will be dearly missed by his large circle of extended family and friends who were privileged to know this remarkable man. We hope he's found the perfect Rusty Nail and has embarked on a grand, new chapter. Everyone is invited to a memorial service to celebrate Dick's life on Wed., August 27th, 4:00 p.m. at the Yacht Club/Sapphire Cove with an informal reception to follow.
