WHATCOM COUNTY OBITUARIES     HEP - HESS

HEPLER, Mary Lou (Angell) passed away peacefully at home on November 13, 2006, surrounded by close friends and both sons. She was born in Bellingham June 4, 1929 to Jack and Bea Angell, the youngest of four children. While growing up, her life centered around family, school, sports, and lots of friends. In high school she started her first "real" job at Bellingham National Bank as a secretary, staying for 13 years until starting a family. In 1958 Mary Lou wed Dr Earl Hepler, an instructor at Western. During their marriage, two sons were born, they traveled extensively, and lived in such diverse locations as Oregon, Alaska, Ethiopia, and Montana. In 1985, Mary Lou came back home to live, work and spend time with her Mother. Although always involved, it was after her retirement from the Bellingham School District that she was able to dedicate her extra time toward concerns that mattered the most to her. These included volunteering at Wise Buys, the hospital and Stafholt Rest Home, her sisterhood at P.E.O. (she never would tell us what the initials stood for), and church activities. The pinnacle of her retirement started in 1999 after moving to Birch Bay Village. Still able to continue with outside pursuits, it was her ability to relax in the quiet, birdwatch, and walk the many beaches (with or without a lab) that gave the greatest joy. Mary Lou is survived by sons Karl and Kurt, as well as beloved dog Rufus. At her request, there will be no formal funeral services.
