HELLAND, George H., age 80, of 1535 Grant Street, passed away at a local hospital Sunday, February 11, (1951). Mr. Helland had been a resident of Bellingham for the past five years. Surviving relatives include a nephew, Joe Helland, of Route 2, Tacoma. Services were conducted Friday, February 16, at 3:30 p.m. within the Rose Chapel of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home with the Rev. Alvin S. Hansen, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church officiating. Cremation.

HELLAND, Jarle - Funeral services for Jarle Helland, 87, a re tired carpenter, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Westford Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leonard Ericksen officiating. Graveside services will follow in Bayview Cemetery. Mr. Helland, 3010 St. Clair St., died Tuesday (April 19, 1988) at his home. He was born Dec. 29, 1900, in Norway. Mr. Helland started working at carpentry with his father in Norway when he was 14. He moved to Minnesota in 1923, before moving to Bellingham in 1929. He married Tora Steinbakke in 1937. Mr. Helland worked with Guy Efford as a finish carpenter. He was a member of Sons of Norway for 60 years, a member of the local carpenters union and had served in the Norwegian Army. His wife, Tora, died in 1985. Survivors include, a daughter, Agnes Ann Wolton, of Blaine; two sons, Roy of Puyallup and Norm of Bellingham; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Odd Helland and Roar Helland, both in Norway; four sisters, Margaret Stallvik, Marlene Westerlund, Asbjorg Slette and Hjordis Helland, all of Norway; and numerous nieces and nephews. HELLAND, Tora, age 73, of 3010 St. Clair, passed away Mon. May 6, (1985). Mrs. Helland had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 55 years, coming from Norway in 1930. She was a member of the Central Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway and leaves to survive her husband, Jarle of the home, who she married in 1937; 2 sons, Norman & wife Judy of City and Ray & wife Jean of Puyallup; 1 daughter, Agnes Ann and husband Jerry wolten of Blaine; 9 grandchildren, Mike Chapman, Cindy & Erik Helland, Linda & Todd Berge, Jennifer, Brad, Karri & Ron Wolten; a sister, Anne Vea of Norway, 3 brothers, Ed Bakke of City, Ola and Thorstein Steindakke, both of Norway. Funeral services will be conducted Fri. May 10 at 2 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church with Rev. Leonard Ericksen officiating. Interment Bayview. Arrangements by the Westford Funeral Home.

HELLBERG, Gunnar L., Dr., age 69, of 923 Liberty St. passed away Saturday, July 28 (1973). Dr. Hellberg has been a resident of Bellingham for the past 39 years, was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, past president of the Bellingham Central Lions. A member of Bellingham Bay Lodge No. 44 F & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Nile Temple, National Ski Patrol, the Norwegian Male Chorus, Sons of Norway, board of the Salvation Army, the Gold Foil Study Club and the Washington State and Whatcom County Dental Association. He leaves to survive his wife, Inger F. Hellberg of the family home; 1 daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Ormiston of Cour d' Alene, Idaho; 3 sisters of Norway; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are pending at the Westford Funeral Home.

HELLER, Agnes, 77, Maple Falls, died at home Friday (Aug. 19, 1966) following a lingering illness. Mrs. Heller was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church at Columbia Valley; a charter member of Welcome Grange, of which she was secretary for more than 30 years; and president of the Democratic women's auxiliary. She was also retired postmistress at Maple Falls and a graduate of Bellingham Normal School. Surviving are the husband, Noah, at home; three sons, Jack and Robert of Bellingham and Frank of Kendall; four daughters, Mrs. Ellen Wight and Mrs. Marian Stangeland, both of Bellingham, Mrs. Dorothy Courtman, St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Marjorie Duncan, Nimpo Lake, B.C.; 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements are pending at Gillies Funeral Home in Sumas.

HELLER, Anna Louise, age 90 of 2800 W. Maplewood, Bellingham, died Friday, January 6, 1984. She had been a resident of Bellingham for 12 years, was a retired registered nurse. She was born in Carbon County, WY. Surviving is 1 son, Raymon of Bellingham; 3 grandchildren. Graveside services Tues., Jan. 10, 2:00 p.m. at Pioneer Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Under the direction of Hill Funeral Home, Puyallup.

HELLER, Esther Nyback, age 67, of 2626 Humboldt St., passed away Friday, July 23, (1965). A sixty year resident of Bellingham, Mrs. Heller was a member of the Northwest Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a graduate of St. Luke's School of Nursing, served as a surgery nurse and was an instructor of nurses for a number of years. Survivors are her husband Philip M. at home; one son, Phillip N. of Greensburg, Penn.; five granddaughters, two sisters, Mrs. Hulda Sherman of Bellingham, Mrs. Freda Leland of Seattle; numerous nieces and nephews. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services will be conducted by Pastor Howard T. Olson Tuesday, July 27, at 3 p.m. followed by cremation.

HELLER, Noah H. - Rosary for Noah H. Heller, 89, formerly of Maple Falls, will be said by the Rev. Anthony B. Corrigan at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bingham & Jerns Funeral Home. A resident of the Maple Falls community for 60 years, Mr. Heller died Sunday (Feb. 16, 1975). He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and of Welcome Grange 463. He leaves to survive 3 sons, Jack of Bellingham, Frank of Deming and Robert of Maple Falls; 4 daughters, Mrs. Ellen Wight and Mrs. Marion Stangeland, both of Bellingham, Mrs. Marjorie Duncan of Abbotsford, B.C. and Mrs. Dorothy Courtman of Mercer Island; also 28 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Inez Hinds and Elva Stant, both of Indiana. ...Mass of the Christian Burial to be celebrated Friday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Catholic Church of Deming, Washington with Father Thomas Pitch as celebrant. HELLER, Philip Mose - Memorial service for Philip Mose Heller, age 85, of Sehome Plaza, will be Wed. June 9 at 3 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home with Dr. James Mason officiating. HELLER, Willard J. "Blackie" age 63 of Bellingham, died June 18, 1989 in B'ham. He was born Oct. 16, 1925 in Stroudsburg, PA. He was employed in the construction business & was a member of Local No. 276. Survivors include his wife, Della Heller of B'ham; Mr. & Mrs. Edward McGlothren (sic) of Murphy, CA; 4 sons, Edward McGlothern of Murphy, CA, Jack McGlothern of B'ham, Robert McGlothern of Lakewood, Daniel McGlothern of B'ham; a daughter, Sharon McGlothern of B'ham; brothers, Floyd Heller of Allentown, PA, Jack Heller of Hellertown, PA; a cousin Jim stiff of Las Vegas, Carol Dodd of El Cajon, CA; a sister-in-law & brother-in-law Pat and Stan Kink of Burlington; 10 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; numerous nieces & nephews. HELLGREN, Thelma Galbraith, formerly of Acme, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, in Port Angeles. She was 83. At her request, no service will be held. Burial will be in Saxon Cemetery. Born April 3, 1914, to Will and Hursel Galbraith in Acme, she graduated from Mount Baker High School in 1932. Mrs. Hellgren was a member of Acme Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert. Survivors include son Bill Hellgren of Woodland, Calif., daughter Nancy Mills of Littleton, Colo., and sister Maude Hendry of Bellingham.

HELLYER, Glen Audley, 86, of 1530 James St., Bellingham, passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 1994 in Bellingham. Mr. Hellyer was born Nov. 23, 1907 in Bellingham to Harold and Melinda (Galbraith) Hellyer and lived in Acme all of his life. He was a logger and enjoyed hunting and hiking in the woods. He is survived by his two sons, Glen Earl Hellyer and Jon C. Hellyer of Seattle; a daughter, Margaret Hellyer of Bellingham; brother Clare Hellyer of Acme; sister Linda Hellyer of Bellingham; two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie in 1989. A graveside service was held Tuesday at Saxon Cemetery with Rev. Sharon Hare officiating. The arrangements and services were entrusted to The Jerns LeVeck Funeral Chapel and Crematorium of Bellingham.

HELLYER, Harold Christie, 80, of Acme, passed away in a local hospital Friday, November 15, (1957). Mr. Hellyer had been a resident of Whatcom County the past 56 years and was a retired watchmaker, Surviving relatives include the widow: Minnie G. at the family home; two sons; Glen A. and Clare G., both of Acme; a daughter: Miss Linda Hellyer of Acme; six grandchildren, and two sisters: Miss Stella Hellyer and Miss Linda Hellyer, both of Truro, Nova Scotia. The remains rest at the Jones' Harlow-Hollingsworth Funeral Home where services will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 1:00 p.m. Final resting place Saxon Cemetery.

HELLYER, Marie Irene - Services for Marie Irene Hellyer, 66, a former Bellingham schoolteacher, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Acme Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Tom Tweedie officiating. Mrs. Hellyer of 2087 Valley Highway, Acme, died Wednesday (April 26, 1989). She was born Feb. 18, 1923, in Seattle, and had been a Whatcom County resident for 35 years. She grew up in Ketchikan, Alaska, and moved to Bellingham in 1941, where she attended Western Washington University. She received her bachelor's degree in education in 1945, and taught in Auburn, Burlington and Bellingham schools from then until 1953. She loved quilting and was a member of the Roeder and Evergreen Quilters. Survivors include her husband, Glen; a daughter, Margaret Hellyer of Bellingham; two sons, Glen and Jon Hellyer, both of Seattle; her mother, Gertrude Michalsen of Seattle; two brothers, Ivar Eines of Edmonds and Thorlief Michalsen of Seattle; two sisters, Johanna Close of Ketchikan and Selma Snaring of Seattle; one grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Jerns & LeVeck Funeral Chapel.

HELLYER, Minnie Galbraith, age 82, of Acme, passed away in a local hospital Saturday, December 23, (1961). A 75 year resident of Whatcom County, Mrs. Hellyer was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Acme. Survivors are two sons, Glen A. and Clare G. Hellyer, both of Acme; one daughter, Miss Linda Hellyer of Bellingham; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Naomi Pettigrew; two brothers, Audley A. and Hugh R. Galbraith, all of Acme; many nieces and nephews. The remains rest at the Jones Funeral Home where services will be conducted by Albert C. Gunderson Tuesday, December 26 at 11:00 a.m. Final resting place Saxon Cemetery.

HELLYER, Virginia Lee, of Acme, passed away December 10, 1992 at the home of her daughters in Santa Barbara, CA. Following cremation she will be interred in the Lee family plot at Panaca, Nevada. Virginia is survived by her husband Clare; six chinldre; Lee and wife Carol of Fort Worth, Texas; Sara Boe and husband David of San Diego, CA; Peter and wife Marcia of Bellingham, Reed of Carmel, cA; Melinda and Louise of Santa Barbara; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. HELM, Howard, age 85, of Samish Island, passed away in a local hospital Monday, April 19, (1954). Mr. Helm had resided at Samish Island for several years, and was a retired oyster grower. Only surviving relatives include several nieces and cousins. The remains will be forwarded by Harlow-Hollingsworth Funeral Home to the Gant Funeral Home in Rudsburg, Wis., for services and interment.

HELMER, Howard Earl Jr., 62, passed away Nov. 9, 1994 in Renton, WA. Howard lived in King County. He acquired many friends during his 38 years with Greyhound before retiring. He used his strengths and knowledge to help many people and will be dearly missed. He enjoyed computers, motorcycles, water and snow skiing, boating, camping and garage saleing. He was very mechanically inclined and enjoyed new technology and the Republican party. He is survived by his son Howard O'Grady and his wife Lori. Daughters Colleen Stafford, Jennifer Barnhart and Barbara Hartman and her husband Kyle, Tacoma; mother Ellen Helmer, sister Helen Fischer and her husband Richard, all from Bellingham. 7 grandchildren. Services 3:00 p.m. Monday Nov. 14th at the Tacoma stake Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, 1102 South Pearl St., Tacoma. HELMER, Robert E. of 3212 Alderwood Ave. died Tuesday, July 6, 1993, at home. He was 48. Cause of death was unavailable at time of publication. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Jones-Moles Funeral Home in Bellingham. Burial will be in Nooksack Cemetery. He was born July 30, 1944, in Bellingham to Howard E. and Ellen Moberg Helmer. A lifelong resident of Bellingham, he was a graduate of Bellingham High School. Mr. Helmer attended Skagit Valley College before serving with the Coast Guard on the icebreaker "North Wind." He drove a school bus for Bellingham School District No. 501 until his disability retirement. He was a member of the Teamsters union, Bellingham Bay Lodge No. 44 F&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and American Legion Post No. 7. He was preceded in death by his father in July 1971. Survivors include his mother of Bellingham; sister Helen E. Fischer, also of Bellingham; brother Howard E. Helmer J. of Seattle; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

HELMS, Charles A., Sr. age 81 who resided at Route 3 Ferndale passed away at the family home Saturday, May 30, (1959) following a brief illness. Mr. Helms was a pioneer of Whatcom County having resided here for the past 40 years. He was a retired railroad employee and farmer. He was a member of the Christian Science Church. He leaves to survive his wife, M. Anna Helms at the family home; two sons, Warren D. of Custer and Charles A. Jr. of Bellingham; four daughters, Mrs. Mable Holmstrom of Seattle, Mrs. Ruth Thue of Guam, Mrs. Ruby Huff of Vashon Island and Mrs. Lucy Jane Pearson of Aberdeen; two brothers, Orville and Guy and one sister, Mrs. Annie Willis, all residing in Kansas. Also 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The remains rest at the Bingham and Jerns Funeral Home where services will be conducted by Mrs. Ida Badiker, C.S., on Thursday, June 4, at 2 o'clock. Final resting place, Bay View Cemetery.

HELMS, Charles Lloyd, of Blaine, passed away October 3, 1983 at the age of 66. He had been a member of the Local 302 of Seattle and the Thoroughbred Horse Race Assoc. of Vancouver, B.C. He had been in the community since 1967. He is survived by his wife, Isabella; 3 sons, Gail, Max and David Helms; 3 daughters, Donna Helms, Charleen Koehn, Judy Merrett; 3 brothers, Ralph, Jay & Harley Helms; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces & nephews. HELMS, Mona R. - A graveside service for Mona R. Helms, 88, of Bellingham will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Greenacres Memorial Park, with Rabbi Yossi J. Liebowitz of Beth Israel Synagogue conducting the services. Mrs. Helms died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at home. Arrangements are by Westford Funeral Home.

HELMS, Warren D., age 81, of 2214 Vining St., passed away Monday, Aug. 17, (1987). Mr. Helms had resided in Whatcom County since 1921 and was a machinist. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Science, the Bellingham Yacht Club, the Model Railroad Club, the Motorcycle Taxi Service, Mason Lodge F & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Nile Temple of the Shrine, past president Northwest Shrine Club, Elks Club, and was a C.P.O. In the U.S. Coast Guard, was a fireman and relief engineer at Blodell (sic) Donovan on the Olympic Penninsula (sic). Survived by his wife, Mona of the home; 2 daughters, Julie Quimby and Donna Grady, both of city; 4 grandchildren; brother Charles city; 3 sisters Ruth Phue of Fairfax, Virginia, Ruby Huff of Seattle, and Lucy Jane Pearson of Aberdeen; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted, Thurs., Aug. 27, 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home.

HELMSING, George H. - Memorial funeral services for former Lynden insurance agent George H. Helmsing, 82, were conducted on Tuesday, in the chapel of Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden, with his nephew, Hewitt Helmsing, officiating. He passed away July 28, 1992. Born in Davidson, Saskatchewan on Oct. 28, 1909, George moved with his parents, Harold and Lilian Helmsing, and their family to British Columbia in 1913. Following graduation from high school, he became an officer of the Port Moody police force and also served in the former B.C. police force. It was while stationed at Sidney, B.C. that he met Marilou Bechaud on Labor Day 1934 when George helped Marilou and her mother after they had car trouble coming off the ferry in Sidney; they were married in Anacortes on Jan. 6, 1935. Marilou passed away in 1986. In 1943 George and Marilou moved to the Lynden area and for many years Mr. Helmsing was the Farmers Insurance agent in Lynden. He and Marilou lived on the Rathbone Road, where they shared their love of Appaloosa horses. George was well known for his abilities as an emcee at horse events at the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden and at many other horse events throughout Washington. He was a former member of the Appaloosa Horse Association and was also a member and past-president of the B.C. Provincial Police Association. He is survived by a brother, Bill Helmsing of Penticton, B.C. and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, George was preceded by brothers Walter and John Helmsing. Services and cremation are under the directions of the Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.

HELMSING, Marilou Armande - Memorial services for Marilou Armande Helmsing, age 76, were conducted on Monday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. in Gillies Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Hewitt Helmsing officiating. Mrs. Helmsing passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, (1986) after a long illness. Marilou graduated from Chehalis High School with high honors ar the age of 14. She received her B.A. from The College of Puget Sound at the age of 19. Marilou also received her master's degree from the University of Washington at 22. She was the youngest teach at Issaquah High School. She worked for the welfare office in Mt. Vernon for the San Juan Islands for two years. She married her husband, George, Jan. 6, 1935, in Anacortes. Marilou taught English, and foreign language and drama from 1947 to 1952 at Lynden High school, From 1952 until her retirement in 1971 she was in charge of the business education department at Lynden High School. Mrs. Helmsing is survived by her husband, George, of Lynden, and several cousins. Cremation was under the direction of Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.

HELSELL, Virginia Ruth Satterberg - Virginia Ruth (Ginny) was born on May 15, 1925 at Seattle's Swedish Hospital to Ruth and Elmer Satterberg. She attended the University of Washington and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor's degree in economics and business. The Delta Gamma sorority proved her with a group of life long friends. She was married in 1945 to Pat Pigott who died in a 1962 racing car accident. Virginia married Bill Helsell in 1964 and with him untied six children into a strong close family. Ginny is survived by her husband, Bill; her sister, Sally Brookbank; her children, Judy Swenson, Kate Lazarus, Mary Pigott, Pete Helsell, Frank Helsell and Michael Piggott; and by her 15 grandchildren, Stephen, Caroline, Sean, Damien, Brynne, Benjamin, Jonathan, Amy, Paul, Brian, Alex, Tyler, Kelly Danny and Nicholas. Ginny served on the Seattle King County Council of Camp Fire Boys and Girls Board of Directors for many years. She served more recently as a member of the Board of Trustees for Seattle Prep - Matteo Ricci College Form 1. She belonged to the Alma Stewart Ballinger Guild of Children's Hospital and was an active member of Christ the King Parish in North Seattle. She was an ardent enthusiastic golfer who played "rain or shine." After Pat Pigott's death, Ginney assumed the operation of his Volkswagon dealership, becoming the first woman to own and operate such a dealership in the United States. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Christ the King Catholic Church, 405 North 117th Street, Seattle, on Monday, April 4, 1994 at 2 p.m.

HELSLEY, Fred, 2551 Lake Samish Road, age 57, passed away Thursday, March 16, (1967). A fifteen year resident of this community, Mr. Helsley was retired from the U.S.A.F. He was honorary life member, and former chief, of the Lake Samish Fire department. Survivors are his widow, Sue A., at home; two sons, George A. and Alvin A. Marsten, both of Seattle; a daughter, Mrs. Jack Hueston, City; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Warren Ambrose and a sister, Miss Ruth Helsley, both of Norfolk, Va. Services will be conducted by Rev. Joe Walker Monday, March 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jones Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Bay View Cemetery.

HELSLEY, Susan A., age 94, formerly of 1200 Lincoln St., passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 1992 in Blaine. Born May 7, 1898 in Ameersfort, Holland to Lambertus and Marie VanKeulen, Mrs. Helsley has been a resident of Bellingham since 1952 and was well known for her artistic abilities in ceramics and rug making. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Helsley in 1967; and her daughter Jane Quiggle in 1988 and son Alvin Marsten. Survived by son Albert & wife Mildred Marsten of Seattle, 12 grandchildren and numerous gt grandchildren and several great great grandchildren, 2 sisters Mary Bergman of Bellingham, Antionette Beasley of Tunnel Hill, GA, numerous nieces and nephews. HELSTROM, Clyde M., age 57, resident of 1401 Bernice St., Mt. Vernon died at this home Tues. Sept. 5, 1978. He was born in Burlington in 1921, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Axle Helstrom. He was educated in Mt. Vernon & entered the U.S. Army during WWII serving in the Panama area. After being discharged he returned to Mt. Vernon where he has lived since. Mr. Helstrom had been employed by Petrolane Northwest Supply for 18 years, retiring in Nov. of 1977 due to ill health. He was united in marriage to Arlie Gilbert in Mt. Vernon, Sept. 2, 1972. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 411. Survivors are his wife, Arlie of Mt. Vernon. 1 daughter, Norma Gilbert of Mt. Vernon. 1 step-son, Rodney Britt of Modesto, CA. 1 sister, Mrs. Grace LaRue of Arizona. 2 brothers; Irvin Helstrom of Ridgefield, WA & Donald Helstrom of Silverdale, WA. 3 grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held in the Hawthorne Lawn Cemetery at 1 p.m. Fri. Sept. 8th with Rev. Willholland Williams of the First Baptist Church officiating. Mr. Helstrom will lie in state at Kern Funeral Chapel until noon Friday for those wishing to pay their last respects.

HELT, John, age 77, of 2513 Utter street, passed away at a local hospital (April 15, 1950) following a brief illness. He had been a resident of Bellingham for the past four years, and is a retired shingleweaver. Survivors include a cousin, Mrs. Ruth Main, of this city; a son of Ivan LeRoy Helt, of Texas, and a brother, Ivan Helt, in Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 19, at 2:30 p.m. in the Clear Lake Community Church under the direction of the Bingham-Dahlquist & Jerns Funeral Home. HEMBREE, Marie Cooper, of 1310 Humbolt St. died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1993, at her home. She was 65. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenacres Memorial Park with the Rev. David Korsen officiating. She was born Oct. 30, 1927, in Powell, Tenn. to Walter and Beatrice [Branam] Cooper. She married Homer D. Hembree on Dec. 5, 1946. A Bellingham resident since 1947, Mrs. Hembree worked at Sehome Park Care Center and was a member of Free Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband of the family home; sons Steve Hembree of Bellingham and Dewayne Hembree of Minnatonka, Minn.; brothers Ralph Cooper of Powell, Tenn. and Frank B. Cooper of Bensalem, PA; sister Viola Paluzelle and Glendora P. Hubbs, both of Knoxville, Tenn., Dot Womac and Carolyne Callahan, both of Powell, Tenn. and Donna Henry of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. HEMINGWAY, Harriet Louisa, age 71 of 119 W. Grover st., Lynden, passed away Monday, November 3, (1958). Born in New York March 26, 1887, she came to the Lynden area in 1891. She was married to Walter G. Hemingway in 1904 and he preceded her in death in 1950. She was a past matron of the O.E.S. No. 12 of Lynden. She is survived by 1 sister, Mrs. Jennie A. HEMMEN, Paul George, age 62, of Bellingham, WA, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 1997 in Bellingham. He was born to George and Johanna (Fredrickson) Hemmen September 14, 1934, in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Hemmen was a resident of Whatcom County for 26 years. He married Susan Doerman of November 10, 1962 in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Hemmen was preceded in death by his father George Hemmen in 1989. Survived by: wife Susan Hemmen of Bellingham, WA; son, James Hemmen of Bellingham, WA; son Daniel Hemmen of Portland, OR; son, Anthony Hemmen of Bellingham, WA; daughter, Christina Hemmen of Seattle, WA; sister, Marion Hixson of St. Louis, MO; mother, Johanna Hemmen, of St. Louis, MO; in addition he has five nieces and nephews; three aunts and one uncle. Mr. Hemmen was a manufacturing management consultant with the Oliver Wight Co. and a former Vice-President with Uniflite, Inc. He was formerly with the Emerson Electric Co., St. Louis, MO and McDonald Douglas, at St. Louis, MO as a project planner for NASA space projects. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Washington University, St. Louis, MO. Mr. Hemmen was active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Committee Chairman of Troop 40 for 20 years and District Chairman for the Mount Baker area council. He served in the Sacred Heart Church Parish Council. He was a Rotary and Kiwanis Club member. In addition, he served on the board of the Whatcom Psychiatric and Counseling Clinic, and the United Way of Whatcom County. He served on the President's Circle at WWU and the university's business school advisory board. He helped design and create WWU's new Manufacturing Management degree. Future students will be recognized through a scholarship award from the Oliver Wight Co. established by Mr. Hemmen. In his spare time he enjoyed the following hobbies with his family; boating in the San Juans, fishing in oceans and lakes, woodworking in his shop, hiking and camping in the local Cascade mountains. He truly loved skiing, locally and taking ski trips to places like Whistler, B.C., Mt. Bachelor, Bend, OR and Vail, CO. He loved to travel to places such as Hawaii, Cancun, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bavaria, Germany. His true love was in the art of Jazz music. Often time you would find him playing his favorite instruments, the clarinet and the tenor saxophone, or listening to his wide collection of music. Mr. Hemmestad had been a resident of this community for the past 21 years and was affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Tailors' Union. Immediate surviving relatives include, his wife, Mrs. Ida Hemmestad; one son, Robert, of the home; three daughters, Pauline, of the home; Anita, a student nurse at the Providence Hospital, Everett, Mrs. James M. Gann, of Rapid City, South Dakota; two brothers, Olaf, of Huron, South Dakota, and Theodore, of Norway; one sister, Julia, in Norway. HEMMI, Ann, age 63, of 1785 Bennett addition, passed away at an Olympia hospital Monday, March 13, (1950) following a short illness. HEMMI, Ralph H., age 48 years, 2115 Cory Street, passed away at a local hospital Saturday, March 6, (1948) following a lingering illness. Mr. Hemmi had been a resident of Bellingham for the past two years, coming here from Milwaukee, Wis. He was in the employ of The Hindman Home Electric Co., as electrician, and was a member of Electrical Workers Union LEBW No. 1032. HEMMINGSON, Lois Ann, 45, died Thursday in Mount Vernon. Mrs. Hemmingson was born July 14, 1941, in burlington. She had been a Mount Vernon resident since 1980. She was a member of the Bow Church of Christ and the Bow Women's Club. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Norma and Del Hughes of Bow; a daughter, Myrna Hemmingson of Mount Vernon; two sisters, Lloydene Jenkins of Bow and Susan Snoke of Puyallup; a brother, Ronald Otis of Lewiston, Idaho; and two granddaughters. HEMMINGSON, Margery MacPherson, executive secretary to the publisher of the Bellingham Herald for more than 25 years, passed away Monday at her Lake San Marcos, Calif., home. She was 67. Hemmingston moved to California in 1975 following her retirement from the job she had held since May 12, 1949. She is survived by her sister, Wanda Jones, of Bellingham. Funeral services were today at the Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista, Calif.

HEMMINGSON, Ronald Carl, our beloved brother passed away on December 13, 2003 at the age of 63 in Bellingham, WA. He was born July 10, 1940 in Bellingham and was raised at North Avon, in Mount Vernon, WA. Ron was the grandson of Jacob Martin and Evline Lillian (Layton) Shetler-Hill, who homesteaded in Ferndale, Washington Territory in 1882 and had the first Steam Powered Saw Mill along with his father Hezekiah Shettler. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Ione (Shetler) DePew Hemmingson Storrs, born in Ferndale and died in 1989, father, Karl Johan Algot Al Hemmingson, born in Föglö, Åland, Finland and died in 1993. Ron is survived by his brothers, Eugene and wife Kathleen DePew of Ferndale, Larry and wife Sandy Hemmingson of Mount Vernon sisters, Hilda and husband Orval Meryhew of Auburn, WA, Shiela and husband Darwin Wogan of Anacortes, WA several nieces and nephews, aunts, cousins & his good friends, Bob, Juanita, Jason and Jarel Lloyd of North Avon. Ron loved animals and enjoyed helping his friends and the Farmers Market in Burlington and Mount Vernon. He also enjoyed helping out at a cattle farm in Bow, WA. He was very generous and outgoing. HEMMINGSON, Ruth Odell - Graveside services for Bellingham native Ruth Odell Hemmingson, 87, of Mount Vernon will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ferndale. Burial will follow. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Kern Funeral Chapel in Mount Vernon. Mrs. Hemmingson died Saturday at Skagit Valley Hospital and Health Center. She was born Ruth Odell Aug. 3, 1904 in Bellingham to John M. and Bessie Mae White Odell. She attended school in Bellingham and moved to Seattle as a young woman. Mrs. Hemmingson moved to Orcas Island where she and her husband, Al Hemmingson, owned and operated The Waldheim Resort. In 1952, she moved to Salt Lake City and later to Portland, Ore., where she became an executive and retired in 1974. After retirement, she moved to Mount Vernon where she had lived for 17 years. She was a member of the Baptist Church, The Soroptimist Club, The Vasa Lodge, dance clubs of the Hillcrest and Cook Road dances. She was active in Park Village activities and music activities with senior citizens. Survivors include her husband, Al Hemmingson of the family home; three daughters, Marjorie Yokum of Honolulu, Kathleen Erhold of Anacortes and Julie Woods of Sand Point, Idaho; one son Kenneth Erickson of Anacortes; three stepsons, Eugene DePew of Ferndale, Larry Hemmingson of Oak Harbor and Ronald Hemmingson of Mount Vernon; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Kern Funeral Home of Mount Vernon.

HEMMESTAD, Ole A., age 74 of Route 3, Ferndale passed away at his home Monday, Feb. 3, (1964) following an extended illness. Mr. Hemmestad had been a resident of Whatcom County the past 53 years and was a retired fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Olga at the family home; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted in the Moles Funeral Home Friday, February 7, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Donald Cornell officiating. Final resting place Enterprise Cemetery.

HEMNES, Carl K., 90, formerly of Bellingham, died Jan. 6, 1992, in Globe, Ariz. He was born June 8, 1901, in Norway to Knut and Marta Larssen. He came to the United States in 1926. He was employed in the commercial fishery in Alaska. He married Hannah Akre on June 14, 1930, in Whatcom County. She survives his at the family home. Other survivors include his sons, Aldin Hemnes of Laurel, Edwin Hemnes of Bellingham, John Hemnes and Richard Hemnes, both of Globe, Ariz., and Marvin Hemnes of Boardman, Ore.; daughters Marion McKelvy of Glove and Caroline McManes of Xenia, Ohio; his brother, Magnes Knutzen of Norway; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Jan. 9 in Globe.

HEMNES, Hannah, 85, a former Laurel resident, died March 31, 1994 at a health care center in her hometown of Globe, Ariz. She was born Jan. 25, 1909 in Wild Rose, N.D. She lived in the Laurel area from 1927 to 1963. She then moved to Globe, but returned to Laurel, living there from 1978 to 1990 before going back to Globe. She was a member of Central Lutheran Church in Bellingham and the Norwegian Ladies Aid. She enjoyed crocheting and needlework. Mrs. Hemnes is survived by two daughter, Marion and husband Mac McKelvy of Globe and Caroline and husband Tom McManes of Xenia, Ohio; five sons, Al and wife Jane Hemnes of Laurel, Ed Hemnes of Bellingham, Marvin and wife Barbara Hemnes of Boardman, Ore. and John Hemnes and Richard Hemnes, both of Globe; two sisters, ethel Nelson of Bellingham and Helen Hindman of Proberta, Calif.; 25 grandchildren and 35 grandchildren (sic). She was preceded in death by her husband Carl in 1992; two children, Olive and Robert; sister Cora Mickelsen; brother Earl Akre; and two grandchildren. Services were held April 4 in Globe. No local services will be held.

HEMNES, Regina P., age 94. Mrs. Hemnes was married December 1917 in Bellingham to Rasmus Hemnes. Mr. Hemnes was drowned February 8, 1919 in Bellingham Bay while operating a boat. She continued to live in Bellingham until the middle '40's when she moved to Seattle. Survived by numerous nieces & nephews & their families, member of Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church and Foss Home Auxiliary, both Seattle. HEMPEL, Andrew, age 86, 214 So. 14th St., Lynden, passed away suddenly at his home on Tues. Sept. 27, 1983. Born March 12, 1897 in the Netherlands, Mr. Hempel moved to the Lynden area from California in 1935. A retired farmer, he was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he was past president of the Mens Society and had also been active in the Lynden senior Activity Center. He was married to Ida Kooy in Everett on June 6, 1935. He is survived by his wife Ida; a son, Rev. Ron & wife Irene of Port Orchard; 8 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Grace Andersen of Lynden; numerous nieces & nephews. He was also preceded by a son Alvin & 2 daughters, Iola & Bonna. HEMPEL, Bonna Mae, age 13 years, of Lynden, Route 1, passed away at home, Tuesday, July 8th, (1952). She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hempel; one sister, Iola; two brothers, Alvin and Ronald, all at home; her grandmother, Mrs. Bertha Kooy, of Lynden, Route 1. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 10th, at 1:30 p.m. from the First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden, with the Rev. Louis Voskuil officiating. Interment, Monumenta Cemetery under direction of the Gillies Funeral Home at Lynden.

HEMPEL, Iola Joyce, age 15 years, of Lynden, Route 1, passed away Sunday, March 29, (1953). She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hempel; one brother, Ronald W., at home; her grandmother, Mrs. Bertha Kooy, of Lynden. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 4, at 2 p.m. from the First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden with the Rev. Louis Voskuil officiating. Interment, Monumenta Cemetery under direction of the Gillies Funeral Home at Lynden.

HEMPEL, Weldon, age 58 of 505 W. Bakerview, passed away Wed. Nov. 15, (1978). Mr. Hempel had resided in Bellingham for the past 14 years and was a brick layer with the Buckeye Construction Co. He was a member of Langley Lodge No. 218 F & AM, Brick Layers Union No. 9, Albert J. Hamilton Post No. 7 American Legion, Disabled American Veterans Post No. 19. He leaves to survive his wife, Arletta of the Family home, 2 sons, Chip Hempel of City and Gary Hempel of Seattle; 1 daughter, Karen Lee of Oklahoma; 3 step-daughters, Peggy Horswell of Arizona, Michel Hall and Patricia Hanchett of Seattle; 5 grandchildren. 4 brothers, Ralph and Jerry, both of Minnesota, Clarence of Texas and Roger of Seattle, 1 sister Angelia Wolke of Minnesota. Funeral services will be conducted Monday Nov. 20 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Westford Funeral Home. Followed by Cremation.

HEMPHILL, Charles, age 58, of Route 3, Ferndale, passed away suddenly at his home Friday, June 8, (1951). Mr. Hemphill had been a resident of the Ferndale community for the past four years, and was a veteran of World War 1 and a member of the American Legion at Friday Harbor. Surviving relatives include two sisters, Mrs. Annie McKenzie and Mrs. Edna Nash, both of Friday Harbor; five brothers, A. T. Hemphill of Ontario, Canada, Sam and Bruce of Friday Harbor; Wallace and Melville of Bremerton. The remains were sent to Friday Harbor by the Monroe Mortuary. Services will be held at the Presbyterian church at Friday Harbor, Monday, June 11, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Postma officiating. Interment in the Valley Cemetery under the direction of the King Mortuary.

HEMPHILL, Clarence J., 83, 706 Lake Samish Drive, died Saturday (Dec. 27, 1986) in Bellingham. Arrangements are pending with Jones Funeral Home.

HEMPHILL, Paul W., 75, of Vancouver, B.C., died Sunday (March 20, 1988) in Bellingham. Services and burial will be in Canada. Local arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home.

HEMPHILL, William George, aage 43 years, of Route 5, Box 465, Bellingham, passed away suddenly at his home Saturday, July 26, (1947). He had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 23 years, having resided in Eburne, B.C., prior for 20 years. He had been employed at the Columbia Valley Sash & Door factory, and was a member of the Timberworkers' Union. He leaves to survive, two brothers, Clarence, of Bellingham, and Joseph, of La Grade, Oregon. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 1, at 2:30 p.m. within the Cathedral Chapel of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home with Rev. James M. Wilson officiating. Interment in Woodlawn cemetery.

HEMPLE, Bruce Calvin, Rev. - Visitation for the Rev. Bruce Calvin Hemple will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Gillies Funeral Home. Burial will be in Monumenta Cemetery at 1 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at New Life Fellowship. The Rev. Hemple died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, near Ferndale. He was 68. Born Nov. 10, 1929, in Alameda, Calif., to Jerry and Martha Hemple, he attended Calvin College in Michigan. He joined the U.S. Army, served two years and returned to Calvin College and Seminary. He married Beatrice Shurman on July 18, 1952, in California. The Rev. Hemple spent 26 years as an Army chaplain. He retired from the military in 1977 and moved to Lynden. He became pastor of Wiser Lake Chapel and director of Project Hope, spending the next 14 years ministering to his congregation and helping needy people. He again retired in 1991,but remained as a guest pastor at many churches. The Rev. Hemple served on the Lynden Community Center and Lynden Pioneer Museum boards of directors. He enjoyed serving his Lord and was regarded as a well respected member of the community. Survivors include his wife of Lynden; sister Bertha Verkaik of Michigan; sons Russell Hemple of Ferndale, Jerry Hemple of Lynden and Tim Hemple of Belfair; daughters Renda Hemple of Bellingham and Joy Moorlag of Lynden; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

HEMPLE, Cora, of Lynden, passed away Friday, August 9, (1946) at the age of 76 years. She had been a resident of Lynden for the past nine years and is survived by her husband, Bert; one daughter, Mrs. Chris Anderson, of Vina, California; two sons, Jerry, of Alameda, California, Andrew, of route 1, Lynden, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, August 13, at 2 p.m. from the First Christian Reformed Church in Lynden with Rev. J. C. Verbrugge officiating. Interment in Monumenta Cemetery under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.

HEMPLE, Jerry, age 80 of 1106 Front St., Lynden, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, (1976). A retired DelMonte employe, Mr. Hemple had lived in Lynden the past 7 years, and was a member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church. He was married to Mrs. Alice Baron (sic) in Lynden, on Sept. 30, 1968. Besides his wife, Alice, he is survived by a son, Chaplin Bruce Hemple of San Antonio, Texas and a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Verkaik of Grand Rapids, Michigan; 2 step-sons, Mr. Sid Barron of Lynden and Mr. Henry Barron of Grand Rapids, Michigan; 3 step-daughters, Mrs. Betty Steiger of Bellingham, Mrs. Greta Baker of Hudsonville, Michigan and Mrs. Mary Prince of Downey, Calif.; a brother, Mr. Andy Hemple of Lynden; a sister, Mrs. Grace Andersen of Lynden; 27 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Hemple will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Bethel Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Robert Vermeer officiating. Interment will follow in the Monumenta Cemetery. Funeral services are under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden.

HEMPLE, Martha, age 70 of Alameda, California, passed away in a Tacoma hospital Thursday, July 28, (1966). A longtime California resident, she is survived by her husband, Jerry; one son, Major Bruce Hemple of Fort Lewis; a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Verkaik of Grand Rapids; 2 brothers, Minne and Marten Boorsma, both in Holland; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Triemstra in Canada; also 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden Tuesday, August 2 at 2 p.m. Burial to follow in the Monumenta Cemetery.

HEMPLER, Adele C., age 63 years, Marysville, passed away at her home, Friday, April 9, (1948) following a lingering illness. Surviving are the husband, Justus Hempler, Marysville; one son, George, of Everett; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Brattkus, Bellingham, Mrs. Gertrude Barthel, of Bellingham; three brothers, Albert Weissenborn, Bellingham, Eric Weissenborn, of Seattle, William, of Aberdeen; two sisters in Germany, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 12, at 3:30 p.m. from the Purdy & Walters Funeral Home in Everett.

HEMPLER, Emmy L. - Services for Emmy L. Hempler, 80, a partner in BB Meat and Sausage Manufacturing Co. Inc. along with her husband, were at 11 a.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kenneth Daugs officiated. Burial was in Greenacres Memorial Park. Mrs. Hempler, of 212 Highland Drive, died Sunday (March 26, 1988) in Bellingham. She was born Sept. 3, 1907, in Borken, West Germany. Her father was a stonecarver who worked on buildings along the Rhine River; her mother, a seamstress, raised the family when her father died. She married Hans Hempler, who lived in the United States, in 1934 in Borken. The couple then took a steamer to the United Sates and settled in Bellingham. They became partners in BB Meat, a business that specialized in manufacturing ham, bacon and sausage products. Their products eventually were marketed in a five-state area. During World War II, Mrs. Hempler sent packages and gifts to numerous people in Germany and assisted many others who moved to Whatcom County. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the church's Mary Martha Guild. She also was a member of the Order of Easter Star's Maple Leaf Chapter; Order of Amaranth; Daughters of the Nile; Keep Off Pounds Sensibly; and Bellingham Senior center. She was a leader for Campfire Girls for many years. Activities she enjoyed included gardening, knitting, sewing and lake-fishing with her husband. Survivors include her husband, of the family home; her son, Richard Hempler of Bellingham; her daughter, Katherine Parker, of Edmonds; her sister, Edith Mardorf, of Borken; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements were by Westford Funeral Home.

HEMPLER, Hans, age 84, of Bellingham, co-owner and operator of B.B. Meats and Sausage Co., passed away May 12, 1990 at home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 15, at 1 p.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Kenneth H. Daugs officiating. Interment was in Greenacres Memorial Park. Mr. Hempler was born Nov. 30, 1905, in Borken, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1928 to Port Angeles. In 1934 he returned to Germany to marry Emmy Hof and they returned to Bellingham. Mr. Hempler retired from B.B. Meats and Sausage Co in 1980, but remained active in the business until his death. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, PALS, Whatcom Lodge #151 F&AM, The Shrine, and Sehome Chapter #58 O.E.S. His wife Emmy, preceded him in death in march 1988. He is survived by a daughter, Katherine and husband Dale Parker of Edmonds, and a son, Richard and wife Nancy Hempler of Bellingham; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by Jones Funeral Home.

HEMUS, Helen, age 81 years, of 905 Jersey street passed away at a local hospital early Friday morning, June 4, (1948) following a lingering illness. Miss Hemus had been a resident of Bellingham for the past 48 years and was a retired registered nurse having graduated from St. Luke's hospital in 1911. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal church and the St. Luke's Nurses Alumnae. Miss Hemus leaves no relatives in this country but for the past twelve years has made her home at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Haskell. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 5, at 2 p.m. within the Cathedral chapel of the Westford-Beck Funeral Home with the Rev. Canon E. B. Smith officiating. Interment in Greenacres Memorial Park.
