She remembered the early years in Washington: when the family built the first house on Laurelwood in Bellingham picked wild blackberries and morel mushrooms (to be sauteed in fresh-churned butter) raised chickens, a large garden and fruit trees and helped with their dad's sugar beet contracts for the U & I sugar plant. Overseas trips with the Harpers, Hemmingsens, and Hewitts were well documented with terrific photos and "you had to be there" stories. There are a lot of "Ardie fans" and she will be remembered for many things: her excellent memory and telling of family stories known by some as "Ardie Central" for being the hub of friends and family communication the "calm" in the Harris storms the mom all the kids could talk to maker of the best popcorn balls, waffles and pancakes with homemade raspberry jam Walt's fishing assistant ("Ardie, get the net!") and an avid promoter of the "answer the phone with a pencil and a smile" philosophy.
