OBITUARIES OF WHATCOM COUNTY HALM - HALY
HALOWI, Kenneth Wayne 12/12/1943 – 11/03/2005 Born in Vicksburg, MS, to Myrtle (Holder) and Nicholas Halowi and raised in Chicago, IL. Ken graduated from North Park College and received his masters in Education from Northeastern Illinois University. Like his childhood cowboy heroes, Ken wanted to help people to be a good guy. His dad taught him to live with integrity and to work hard. His mom taught him dignity and the value of family. His father-in-law, Jack, shared Ken's love for learning and electronics. His mother-in-law, Ruth, was his movie buddy and told him, "You have to live for today." Ken is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Kathy, by his brother Keith Halowi, who was his good pal, and sister-in-law Jean Halowi, who was really a dear sister to Ken. Ken also leaves many friends, relatives and coworkers all around the U.S. Ken served in the U.S. Air Force and hoped to teach. When he couldn't find permanent teaching job, he joined the U.S. Government Dept of Labor's Pension, Welfare and Benefits Administration. Ken was proud to lead criminal investigations that recovered millions of dollars for pension, medical and dental plan participants. He worked in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and while in Philadelphia, he became Deputy Director for that region.
Although he had never taken a computer programming course, when the Department of Labor had trouble finding a suitable program, Ken created a complex DOS program on his own time. For developing that program, a big step forward, Ken received the Special Act Award, the U.S. Government's second highest civilian honor. Ken's program was used for several years in offices around the country, even after he retired. Ken loved to sing and belonged to the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Singing in America. He lent his baritone voice to the Golden Gate Chorus and quartets in San Francisco. When Ken retired, he chose Bellingham for its movies, Chinese restaurants, beauty, and the excellent doctors and heart specialists. While here, Ken volunteered with the Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board. He also held several offices on the Fir Ridge II Condominium Association Board of Directors. The Halowi family would like to thank his wonderful doctors, staff and everyone who joined Ken's fight against heart disease and stroke. At his request, there will be no formal services, instead Ken wanted everyone to celebrate the time he was with us. So if you drink a toast to him while watching a good movie, Ken would be glad.
