GANNON, Laura Genevieve – In tribute to our grandmother, Laura Genevieve Gannon, in loving remembrance. "Gen" as she was affectionately called, was born in Basin, Montana, September 30, 1905. She and her family moved to Bellingham, WA when she was a small child. She attended school in Bellingham, and graduated at the age of sixteen. In 1923, at the age of eighteen, she and her older sister Delores, boldly left home to attend Berkeley college in California. Upon arriving, she quickly found work at a boarding house to raise the fifteen dollars needed for a semester at Berkeley. Not long after, she and her sister found work singing in a Cabaret during the evenings, while she attended college during the day, to major in history between 1924-1926. When work and funds ran out, she accepted a job offered by the teachers union, and headed to Christmas Arizona, where she taught children of the mine workers for two years. By World War II, she had married and had a daughter and a son, while working as an expediter for Boeing until 1946. She went on to finish her teaching degree in 1949, and taught in the Renton school district for many years. She spent her last years of teaching working with children who had learning disabilities. With her love of culture and history, she traveled extensively through South America, China, Europe and Africa, and once spent 3 months aboard a steamer traveling throughout the Pacific. Among her many talents and hobbies, Gen was a wonderful writer, photographer and poet, composing a most perfect goodbye to the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her 7 great-great-grandchildren. Who survive to tell the life of a truly exceptional woman: "I'll See You In The Spring" When the crocus meet with the daffodils, and the clouds part for the sun, I'll be there. When the swamp cabbage turns yellow, the alder buds turn green, and the robin sings his love song, I'll see you then. The smell of cedars rise up the hillsides, Fog comes out of the earth to meet the snow in the mountains, Look for me then, And I'll be there.
