His grandparents on both sides were early arrivals to the Northern Section of Whatcom Co. Phyllip's grandfather, Serril Jacob Martin and wife, Frances F. Holmes Martin (both born in NY) arrived at Semiahmoo in the spring of 1872. Serril took out a homestead and was proving up on it when it ended up across the U.S. Canadian Border in the fall of 1872 after Germany's Kaiser Willhelm finally decided where to establish the Border ending the Pig War. He eventually sold the homestead and located in Blaine. Phyllip's mother's family came out on the first Canadian Pacific Railroad that carried passengers from coast to coast. She was two years old. She was born on the Gaspe Penn. to John Eli Milligan and Elizabeth Margaret McCormick Milligan in 1885. Most of Phyllip's siblings were born in Pt. Roberts. Phyllip's family moved to Bellingham, where he attended Roeder Grade School until his father bought acreage where Mobil Refinery (Conoco Phillips) is now located in the Mt. View area. Phyllip joined the Marines when of age, and served in the South Pacific until WWII ended. He worked as an electrician for Puget Sound Pulp and Timber Co. (later GP) for 36 years before retiring. Phyllip met his wife to be, Zelda "Pat" O'Brine in 1946 and they eventually married. They had two sons, Brian Henry Martin and Wade Allen Martin. Phyllip loved boating and sport fishing. On one boating outing, when the water became more than Pat cared for, they started looking for property on Lummi Is. They found a lovely, secluded sandy beach approachable by water or an old logging road, and bought the beach front property on Lummi Is. in 1956. Pat's parents soon after bought a lot next them, and then a sister and husband did also. It was a wonderful place to camp on the weekends. Brothers, sisters, and lots of nieces and nephews enjoyed all the fun of camping, fishing, swimming, boating, etc. Phyllip and Pat eventually built a residence and moved full time to the Island, commuting to work in Bellingham on the six car ferry.
