She was born June 3, 1906, on a small farm in Vora, Finland to Fredrik & Lisa Greta (Prast) Westerlund. Her grandfather and father were miners and worked in both South Africa and America. Her grandfather died at an early age while he was in this country and her father died in a mining accident while working in America when Edna was 13 years old. Remaining in Finland, Lisa Greta and her daughter Edna maintained the family farm. In later teenage years, Edna married Edwin M. Johnson in Finland. Their only child, a daughter, died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson came to the United States in 1948 and resided in Tacoma, WA, where Edna worked for various families (while learning English) before moving to Bellingham. In Bellingham she worked as a hotel manager employed by Parberry Iron & Metal and enjoyed her job and worked until the age of 72. Edna was a dedicated care-giver to Edwin M. Johnson, her beloved Uncle Erik A. Erickson, and friend Stanley Lynch. She retained a zest for living with faith in God, a keen sense of humor, generosity and a compassion for others. Always young-at-heart, Edna attracted friends of all ages. We will remember the sparkle in Edna's eyes and her spirited endurance. With cute appearance and personality, she was fun to be with. Friends often likened Edna to a "mom" or "gramma". The phone chats, hospitality and "little cottage", patient listening, wise advice, and quick wit will be dearly missed. But with love and gratitude in our hearts, we thank God for enriching our memories because of Edna Johnson and the influence of her life on family, friends, and neighbors. Through the years she retained her heritage, exchanged frequent contact with loved ones in Finland, and helped others in immigrate from Finland to America in earlier years.
