West Marlboro or Old Hogback Cemetery,
located corner of Butterfield Road and Old Hogback Road,
within sight of Capt. Ira Adams' house
In 1919 a file was made and is in the D.A.R. room of the Brattleboro
Memorial Library. It omitted the Sawtell marker- that is the only
difference between the 1919 file and one compiled in 1959. There was
some controversy in the thirties about the location of the Sawtell
marker. The tragedy, which caused the death of the whole Sawtell family
except one, took place on Timson Hill in Williamsville. Some believed
that the remains were buried on Newfane Hill and remained there. Others
maintained that the remains were brought to this cemetery (Old Hogback)
and placed in one grave. The Sawtell Marker here is very weathered-
1. The following was copied from it many years ago ---
LEVI SAWTELLE, the only survivor, died in 1812
   Reader, observe this grave contains
   Seven near relative remains.
   Two parents, an ill-fated pair-
   Fairest this hapless offspring were
   Names of the unhappy couple
   HENRY AND JERUSHA SAWTELL
   Henry, one son's the same,
   Jerusha, bore the mother's name.
   Another, as we know well-
   Was Thomas, and young Joel
   In age was nearly equal.
And now is sun the sequel -- the oldest was 14
and all of the children seen one under two, his fate befell.
Eight in all for year 1768 (((error? news accounts say 7 victims)
In this disaster met their fate
at their home on Newfane Hill
No one heard their groans in the embers and pile of stones
We hope for their salvation in spite of this sad cremation
In this bed of coals---GOD REST THEIR SOULS.
There is on Timson Hill a marker at the site of the conflagration.
The marker (above) was inscribed with 7 sad faces at the top.
