Washington County, Vermont Obituaries - 2000 MORI, ELEANOR MAY, 85, of Barre Town, died Jan. 1. Born in 1914 in Montreal, P.Q., she was the daughter of Joseph and Eleanor (Smith) Wyatt. Following the death of her parents, she was raised by Jessie and John Matson in Lower Graniteville. She attended elementary school in Lower Graniteville and graduated from Spaulding High School. In 1938, she married Virgilio Mori, who died in 1991. She had been employed at the Department of Motor Vehicles for the state of Vermont and was a member of the Barre Congregational Church. Survivors include one son, Ronald; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Binaghi, Olga P., 89, of East Barre, died Jan. 3. Born in 1910 in Barre, she was the daughter of Daniel and Ida (Bassani) Saporiti. She attended elementary school in Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School. In 1940, she married Guido Binaghi, who died in 1975. She worked at Berg, Carmolli and Kent Insurance Agency and from 1965 to retirement in 1974, she was the secretary for the Granite Cutters International Association. Parker, Howard F., 81, of Vershire, died Jan. 2. Born in 1918 in Vershire, he was the son of Frank and May (Ricker) Parker. He attended school in Vershire. In 1947, he married Edith M. O'Donnell. He was a logger and worked on the grounds crew at Dartmouth College. After retiring, he did roadside mowing for several area towns. He served in the 104th Yankee Division Medics during WWII. Pike, Teresa, 76, formerly of Montpelier, died Jan. 2. Born in 1923 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of Amalio and Ormalinda (Lavin) Setien. She attended Barre schools and Spaulding High School. She had worked for New England Telephone and had been married to Henry B. Pike, who died in 1980. Survivors include one son, Peter; one daughter, Fawn Wheat; three grandchildren; two brothers. LAFOUNTAIN, LLOYD M., 71, of Moretown, died Dec. 29. Born in 1928 in Montpelier, he was the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Queor) LaFountain. He attended Barre City schools and was a veteran of WWII and Korea, serving in the Army. He had been employed at Rock of Ages. He then moved to Wallingford, Conn., where he was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and to Meriden, Conn., where he was employed by Nasa at Revere Electronics. In 1971, he returned to Barre. He retired in 1974. In 1948, he married Beatrice V. Edson. PURVEE, JESSIE M., 87, formerly of Waterbury Center, died Jan. 1. Born in 1912 in Waterbury Center, she was the daughter of Fred and Ollie Mae (Davis) Graves. Survivors include two daughters, Blanche Gault and Barbara Prescott; two sisters; two brothers; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. DEFORGE, CHARLIE, 59, of East Montpelier, died Dec. 30. Born in 1940, he was the son of Frank DeForge and Rena (Pecor) DeForge. He was a longtime granite industry employee. Chenette, George E., 77, of Randolph, died Jan. 3. Born in 1922, in Burlington, he was the son of Viola Archer. He graduated from Randolph High School and Burlington Business College. He worked at a grocery store in Hardwick, Howard's Market in Barre and P&C grocery store in Randolph. He retired after several years at the Petco Mini Mart in Randolph. In 1953, he married Virginia White. Survivors include his wife; a brother, Elmer Archer. BUZZELL, GLEN R., 88, formerly of Warren, died Jan. 1. Born in 1911 in Warren, he was the son of Richard and Emily (Church) Buzzell. He graduated from Waitsfield High School and in 1939, married Marion Harris, who died in 1999. He was a millwright, designing, operating and troubleshooting sawmills, working at several mills in the Connecticut River Valley, including the Frank Gilman Sawmill in Tunbridge. He became custodian at the Brown Dormitory at Dartmouth College, retiring in 1976. Survivors include two sons, George and Max; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. LINCOLN, JONATHAN D., 41, of Montpelier, died Dec. 30. Born in 1958 in Montpelier, he was the son of Arthur Lincoln Jr. and Arline (Picken) Lincoln. He attended Montpelier High School and New England College in Worcester, Mass. He was employed as a data processor for the State of Vermont and for various insurance companies. Born in 1903 in Barre, she was the daughter of Ermano and Caterina (Arioli) Andreoletti. She attended Barre City schools. She had been employed at Holmes Jewelry Store, retiring in 1973. WALRATH, JEANETTE A., 75, formerly of Barre, died Dec. 14. Born in 1924 in Essex Junction, she was the daughter of Donat and Eva Lefevre. She graduated from Spaulding High School, from Riverside City College in California and from UCLA. In 1944, she married Leslie Walrath. She worked for the State Department in Washington, D.C. and was a substitute teacher. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Stephen and David; five grandchildren; a brother; a sister. Evans, Ralph F., 87, of Marshfield, died Dec. 27. Born in 1912 in Groton, he was the son of Ralph and Bessie (Morrill) Evans. He graduated from Groton High School and attended Vermont State School of Agriculture (VTC). He was employed by the University of Vermont Extension Service as a DHIA milk tester. He graduated from the University of Vermont with a BS in dairy and animal husbandry. He taught dairy husbandry at VSSA was an instructor and assistant professor of animal husbandry at UVM. He attended the University of Maine, receiving an MS in animal husbandry. He managed the HP Hood Demonstration Farm in Beverly, Mass. and was head of the Agricultural Technology Division at VTC, retiring in 1978. Born in 1914 in Topsham, he was the son of Hadie Belle (Welch) and Herbert Williams. He was married to Vina Williams, who died in 1978. He was a carpenter for Elmer Frost Building in Groton and a member of Groton Baptist Church. ALSTON, DOUGLAS W. 61, formerly of Hardwick and more recently of Barre, died Jan. 3. Born in 1938 in St. Johnsbury, he was the son of Reginald and Doris (Jaeckel) Alston. He graduated from Rochville High School in Rochville, Conn. In 1965, he moved to Hardwick, and was employed by the state of Vermont as a boiler room operator in Montpelier and Waterbury. Born in 1916 in Stockbridge, he was the son of Alton and Caroline (Harlow) Bullard. He attended schools in Hartford and served in the Army during WWII. He began working at Central Vermont Railroad in Randolph in 1938 and retired in 1981. In 1938, he married Margaret Muir. Born in 1923 in Brookfield, he was the son of Herbert and Gladys (Williams) Knowles. He attended schools in Brookfield. In 1941, he married Florence Sprague. He worked on the family farm in Brookfield and later joined Lord and Son Excavating of East Barre. He operated heavy equipment and drove trucks for 25 years, retiring in the mid-1980s. SMITH, ROBERT W., 51, of Hardwick, died Jan. 3. Born in 1948 in Morrisville, he was the son of Fay and Beulah (Bapp) Smith. He attended Peoples Academy. He was first married to Gail Boyce and later to Pauline Dufresne Howard. He was a truck driver for Anderson Concrete Co. and worked for the Stowe Mountain Co. He owned and operated a logging business in the Northeast Kingdom. VALLIERE, MARY, 84, of Montpelier, died Jan. 4. Born in 1915 in Wickham, Quebec, Canada, she was the daughter of Antonio and Angeline (Fagnan) Joyal. She attended high school in Wickham. Her husband, Ronald Valliere died in 1974. She was a nurses' aide and caregiver in several local nursing homes. She was a member of the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall in Montpelier. Born in 1977 in Woodsville, N.H., she was the daughter of Linda (Burroughs) Emerson and Philip R. Emerson. He had been a member of the Vermont Army National Guard. In 1935, he married Glenna C. Gallison. He was a member of St. Monica Church. BAKER, RALPH D., 75, of Randolph, died Jan. 5. Born in 1924 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Charles and Helen (Swenson) Baker. He was educated in N.Y. schools and at the Armed Forces Institute. He worked for Western Electric, now known as Lucent Technologies, retiring as a quality assurance inspector for Western Electric at the G.W. Plastics Plant in Bethel. In 1969, he married Ellen Pearson. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII and was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church. She had been married to Leonard P. Preston. she was a psychiatric technician at Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury and a waitress and manager at the Park Restaurant in Waterbury. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury. ROULEAU, LUCIEN P., 69, of Barre Town, died Jan. 12. Born in 1930 in Montpelier, he was the son of Rodolphe and Jeannette (Gaudreau) Rouleau. He attended St. Monica Elementary School and graduated from Spaulding High School. He was president and chairman of the board of Rouleau Granite Co. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 955th Field Artillery battalion attached to the Ninth Army. In 1952, he married Gloria Pinto. He was a member of St. Monica's Church. CARRIER, RAYMOND, 76, of Barre Town, died Jan. 13. Born in 1923 in Compton, Que., Canada, he was the son of Louis and Gracia (Sevigny). The family moved to Graniteville and then to Middlesex. He attended the Middlesex Center School. He served in the Air Corp, graduating from fighter pilot school at Luke Field, AZ, and served two tours in Japan, a tour in Italy and one in Turkey. He retired from the Air Force in 1968 and worked for Over-Seas National Airways in New York as a pilot. He also taught flying and did charter flying. In 1946, he married Lucille Lamothe. MACDONALD, LOUISE P., 90, formerly of Barre, died Jan. 10. Born in 1909 in Lombardia, Italy, she was the daughter of Angelo and Virginia (Locavna) Puricelli. When she was young the family moved to Barre. She attended Barre City schools and graduated from Spaulding High School. In 1938, she married Howard MacDonald, who died in 1938. She was a bookkeeper. DOTEN, RUTH MILES, 77, of Barre, died Jan. 16. Born in 1922 in Barre, she was the daughter of Henry and Blanche Ann (Williams) Miles. She attended East Montpelier schools. In 1976, she married Percy Doten, who died in 1994. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. GOULET, LUCIEN J., SR., 78, of Montpelier, died Jan. 18. Born in 1921 in Dixville, Quebec, he was the son of Philippe F. and Clara (Giguere) Goulet. His family moved to Vermont in 1925 and he attended graded schools in the Graniteville and Barre area. He also attended Spaulding High School. He served in the Navy and in 1945, married Marie Van Hooser. He graduated from Massachusetts Radio School and was employed as an engineer at Radio Station WSKI before going into business for himself. He operated Twin City Radio-TV, retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Augustine's Church. BISSON, RICHARD J., 90, of Barre City, died Jan. 14. Born in 1909 in Barre, he was the son of Henry and Cordelia (LaRochelle) Bisson. He attended Barre City schools and later moved to Springfield, Mass., where he graduated Springfield High School. He also graduated from Duke's University and moved back to Vermont. After discharge from the Army, he worked with his aunt, Agnes LaRochelle at the Barre Dry Cleaners, becoming owner and operator. He retired in 1990. In 1926, she married Harry Tarbox, who died in 1935. After his death, she was employed by the Unemployment Division of the Vermont Department of Employment Security, retiring in 1969. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was employed as supervisor and engineer for construction companies throughout the northeastern states. In 1944, he married Joyce Swift. He worked in Barre granite sheds and was self-employed in the papering and carpentry business. She was predeceased by her first husband, Salvatore Saffioti Sr. In 1959, she married Nathaniel Phillips Jr., who died in 1995. She was a seamstress and presser for D&I Manufacturing Co. in New Haven and moved to Graniteville in 1989. She attended the St. Monica's Church in Barre. She attended Newbury High School and Wells River High School. In 1937, she married Joseph Wheeler, who died in 1990. She was a housekeeper at Goddard College and also worked at the Ginseng Farm and the Legare Farm. BAILEY, SUSAN JEAN, 29, of Williamstown died Jan. 18. Born in 1970 in Nashua, N.H., she was the daughter of Richard and Anna (Garneau) Bailey. She attended Mount Hope School in Nashua and received her certificate from Nashua High School. She had been active in the Special Olympics and had won medals in the swimming and bowling competition. Born in 1918 in White Plains, N.Y., he was the son of Frank and Ida Jones. He graduated from White Plains High School and attended Virginia Military Institute. He was married to June B. Jones, who predeceased him. He served in the military during WWII and the Korean War. He retired from the Army in 1965 as a Lt. Col. He then worked for the Vermont State Property Appraisers' Office. WILKINS, HARRY JOHN, 75, of Barre Town, died Jan. 18. Born in 1924 in Littleton, N.H., he was the son of Roy and Birdie (Neal) Wilkins. He came to Barre with his family and attended Mathewson school and Spaulding High School. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. In 1947, he married Barbara Corey. He owned and operated a Harley-Davidson motorcycle business in Barre and more recently in South Barre. He also helped his wife with Prosperity Dry Cleaners. He was a communicant of the Barre Congregational Church. Survivors include his wife; twins Alan and Ann; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister; nieces and nephews. ROSELLI, VICTOR J., 87, of Montpelier, died Jan. 19. Born in 1912 in Toronto, Canada, he was the son of Michele and Mary (Alberici) Roselli. He attended schools in Bedford, N.H. and served in the Army-Air Force during WWII. In 1952, he married Evelyn Volpi. He did an apprenticeship at the Indiana Limestone Co., specializing in handcarved sculpturing and carving. In 1931, the family purchased the West Side Memorial Works in Ill. and in 1946, they bought Desilets Granite Co. in Montpelier. He managed the plant as vice president and general manager until retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Augustine's Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Daniel; two brothers; two sisters. Born in 1929 in Hemstead, N.Y., she was the daughter of John and Ruth (Brandt) Schmitt. She graduated from Marshfield High School. In 1948, she married Earle Curtis. Born in 1905 in Barre, he was the son of Charles and Giovannina (Galli) Monti. He graduated from Spaulding High School and from Burlington Business School. In 1929, he married Erma Carminati, who died in 1986. He began working at the Granite Savings Bank in Barre where he served as an assistant treasurer and later treasurer and director. He retired in 1970. He was a member of St. Monica Church in Barre. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Monti; many cousins. ROSS, RALPH A., 90, formerly of East Montpelier, died Jan. 21. Born in 1910 in Boston, Mass., he was the adopted son of Jerome and Florence (Rogers) Ross. He was raised in Tunbridge and East Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School. In 1934, he married Mary Stone, who died in 1993. He was an electrician and refrigeration mechanic. He had worked for Fred Holden Inc. in Barre and was self-employed for several years. He later was employed by Washington Electric Co-op and National Life of VT. He retired in 1975. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Balentine; a son, Stuart; five grandchildren. STEVENS, REGINA, 83, of Calais, died Jan. 21. Born in 1917 in East Barre, she was the daughter of Wyness and Alyce Ruth (Morse) Tucker. She attended schools in Washington, graduated from high school and later attended two years of business college in Orford, N.H. In 1942, she married Louis Stevens, who died in 1993. WILSON, ELIZABETH A., 64, of Greensboro Bend, died Jan. 23. Born in 1935 in Candia, N.H., she was the daughter of Daniel and Beatrice (Howland) Stafford. She attended schools in Meredith Center, N.H. and Cape Cod Community College. In 1956, she married Charles Wilson, who died in 1986. She was a clerk at the Leichmere Co. in Worcester, Mass., retiring in 1997. She moved to Greensboro Bend in June 1999. Born in 1926 in Graniteville, she was the daughter of Madeline (Carey) Allaire. She attended the former Holy Ghost School in Graniteville, St. Michael's High School and was an associate member of the Spaulding High School, class of 1944. In 1959, she married Bruce Judd. She and her husband operated the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre. She was a communicant of St. Monica's Church. BOUTWELL, MARGUERITE J., 85, of Montpelier, died Jan. 19. Born in 1914, she was the daughter of Richard and Ella (Gillette) Jacobsen. She received a bachelor's degree from National College of Education in Evanston, Ill. and a master's degree in early elementary education from Middle Tennessee State University. GOODRICH, EZOA "ZOIE", 78, of Hardwick, died Jan. 20. Born in 1921, she was the daughter of Samuel and Claire (Knight) Daniels. In 1941, she married James Goodrich. She operated a nursery school and taught kindergarten classes. She also taught in the Rural School Development Program, was an aide in the Hardwick Elementary School and taught in Title One. She married Robert LaRochelle and was employed at the Vermont State Banking and Insurance Co. and the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Dayville, Conn. Survivors include two sons, Scott and John. CALCAGNI, CHARLES, 98, of Barre, died Jan. 22. Born in 1901, he was the son of Rinaldo and Elizabeth (Rossi) Calcagni. In 1931, he married Madelina Cavoretto. He had worked at the former Comolli and Comolli Granite Company, at Smith, Whitcomb and Cook and retired from Sprague Electric. HASKINS, LAWRENCE A., 74, of Waterbury, died Jan. 26. Born in 1925 in Lincoln, he was the son of Arthur and Eleanor (Devoid) Haskins. He attended schools in Lincoln and Moretown. He worked as a mechanic in Waterbury and also New York, Connecticut and Florida. He retired in 1984 and returned to the Waterbury area in 1997. He had served in the Army during WWII. NARAMORE, DONALD K., 47, of Barre, died Jan. 25. Born in 1952 in Newport, he was the son of William and Blanche (Knowles) Naramore. He graduated from North Country Union High School and graduated from the University of Vermont. He was commissioned a second lieutenant through the ROTC program. He graduated from the Vermont State Police Academy and was assigned to the Middlebury Barracks and then at Ferrisburgh. He later was assigned at state police headquarters in Waterbury. He later was assigned to the Middlesex station as Station Commander. From 1997 until retirement in 1999, he commanded the Commercial Vehicle Unit at the VT State Police Headquarters in Waterbury. He was a member of the Vermont National Guard and was company commander and later operations officer of the 1-172 Armor Battalion and the 86th Armored Brigade. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel. In 1976, he married Frances Magnifico. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ian, Andrew and Seth; two sisters; one brother. SELF, DOUGLAS C., 79, of Northfield, died Jan. 25. Born in 1920 in Spray, N.C., he was the son of Jesse and Alma (Gray) Self. In 1979, he married Marion Eastman, who died in 1993. Born in 1919 in Moretown, he was the son of Fred and Ola (Warren) Wheeler. In 1940, he married Theresa Seckington. He had worked for the State of Vermont Highway Department and in 1968, joined the Village of Northfield Electric Department, retiring in 1985. He was a volunteer fireman for the town of Northfield and a member of St. John the Evangelist Church of Northfield. He operated the family farm, worked at the Red and White market and Waterbury Plastics, both in Randolph and sold produce at the farmers market in Randolph. He was a member of the Sts. She was a retail manager in Barre and she and her husband owned and operated Mario's Restaurant. Prior to retirement in 1988, she managed the Round Table Lounge at the Sir Anthony Motel in Barre. Born in 1915, he graduated from Bradford Academy and received his master's degree from Boston University School of Theology. In 1958, he married June (Helfer) Blanchard. In 1948, she married Hadley Gaylord Sr. They made their home in Waitsfield, where she owned and managed Phyl-Den's Dairy Bar and was co-owner and bookkeeper of Hap's Service Station. She was a member of Waitsfield United Church of Christ. She was first married to Leslie Cole and in 1970, she married Richard (Bud) Lanphear. She had worked at Sprague Electric Co. and McFarland House, both in Barre, and later for the Vermont State Tax Dept. She had been a resident of the Waterbury area since 1994 and was employed by Resources for Community Living. Born in 1932 in Bethel, he was educated in Little Northfield, Gaysville and Randolph schools. In 1953, he married Stella Nelson, who died in 1993. He operated a dump truck and a milk truck and farmed in Williamstown, retiring in the late 1980s. He then worked at the Lyle Haven Farm in East Montpelier. He had served in the Navy during the Korean War. Survivors include two stepsons, Worley Parton Jr. and Charles Parton; three brothers; five sisters. PELKEY, CARL L., 83, of Barre, died Feb. 4. Born in 1915, he was the son of August and Amelia (Blow) Pelkey. He attended Spaulding High School. In 1950, he married Lillian Hyde, who died in 1988. He worked in Barre for Dubois Paint and Wallpaper Company and later for Smith, Whitcomb & Cook. After retirement he worked part-time for Peter Glenn Ski and Sports Outlet in Berlin. He served in the Army during WWII. He had been a member of St. Sylvester Church in Graniteville and more recently of St. Monica Church in Barre. Born in 1926 in Northfield, he was educated in Washington schools. He became a master carpenter and also a mechanic, employed by Twin Town Motors in Barre. He worked at Randolph Furniture Co. and the Van Raalte Co., retiring from the Harris Co. in New Hampshire. He had served in the Army during the Korean War. Born in 1904 in Washington, D.C. she was the daughter of Thomas Edward and Ella Julia Cogan. She was retired from the National Institute of Health in 1969. Born in 1925 in Clifton, N.H., he was the son of Harvey and Hannah (Poor) Palmer. He graduated from Paterson High School and married Margaret (Pez) Palmer in 1944. They moved to Orange in 1985. He was a truck driver with Pacific International Express in N.J. and had served in the Army during WWII. She attended local schools and later college in Lancaster, PA. She worked as a secretary in New York City. In 1931, she married Wilber Lee Eckert, who predeceased her. She and her husband were self-employed as sellers of farm produce and later operated an animal dealership. She had been employed by Voc Rehab Division for the Blind, St. Johnsbury Convalescent Center and the Vermont Department of Social Welfare. She also worked at Rich's Department Store in Berlin. BOYCE, DWIGHT EDWIN, 89, of Stowe, died Jan. 28. Born in 1910 in Stowe, he was the son of Melvin and Laila (Magoon) Boyce. He grew up and lived most of his life in Stowe. He attended the West Branch School in Stowe. In 1952, he married Adeline Roy Leveway. He worked as a janitor at the Capitol Building in Montpelier, for the Stowe Cemeteries and at the Stoweware Mall in Lower Village of Stowe, until his retirement. Survivors include his wife; many cousins. MEDVED, KATHERINE T., 88, of Marshfield, died Feb. 8. Born in 1911 in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of Theodore and Anna Sayka. She graduated from Froebel High School in Gary, Ind. In 1936, she married Paul Medved, who died in 1988. After her husband's death, she moved to Marshfield where she was a member of the North American Martyrs Church. Born in 1910 in Barre, she was the daughter of Giacomo and Elettra (Lizzari Hoffer) Cecchini. She graduated from Spaulding High School and worked for the Barre Granite Association and then the M&W Railroad Office in Montpelier. In 1931, she married Clarence Campbell, who died in 1982. FOSTER, SABA LAURA, of Montpelier, died Feb. 5. Born in Wollaston, Mass., she was the daughter of Saba Drew Thomas and James Paul Foster. She worked as a secretary before joining the Houhgton, Mifflin Company as a text book editor. When she moved to Vermont she began working at National Life Insurance Company. She owned and operated a rubbish route in Montpelier and also worked at Petco, Cody Enterprises and Twinfield Auto Repair. Born in 1948 in Woodbury, he was the son of Altos and Thelma (Rathburn) Corey. He graduated from Hardwick Academy. He had worked at a cement company in Colorado, was a truck driver in Washington state and had been employed by Pike Industries. Most recently, he worked for the Willey Construction Co. of East Calais. He served in the Army during the Vietnam war. She graduated from Montpelier Seminary and Bay Path Institute in Springfield, Mass. In 1938, she married Carroll Williams, who died in 1977. She had been employed by the VT Tax Department, retiring in 1983. She and her husband provided foster care for many children. She was a member of the Moretown Methodist Church. She attended schools in Barre and graduated from Spaulding High School She attended Smith College and earned a bachelor of arts degree in Romance Languages. In 1926, she married Vincent P. Sassone, who died in 1946. She taught in Dorchester, Mass. and Spaulding High School, retiring in 1964. She was a member of St. Monica's Church in Barre. HOWARD, KAY, 50, formerly of Montpelier, died Feb. 11. Born in 1949 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of Brendan and Marjorie (Stewart) O'Brien. She worked in various doctors' and medical offices as a secretary and receptionist. LEA, WINIFRED HOOPER, 89, formerly Calais and East Montpelier, died Feb. 9. Born in 1910 in New Hampshire, she spend her early life in Elmore where she attended school. She attended Montpelier Seminary. In 1931, she married Leslie Hooper. They made their home in Calais and later in East Montpelier. She was employed at Heaton Hospital and later at Central Vermont Hospital in the nursing profession. Her husband died in 1967. In 1968, she married Raymond Lea and they resided in Worcester. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Montpelier and attended Shady Rill Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Cecilia Hooper Martin; a step-daughter, Linda Lea Hopkins; a step-son, Gary Lea; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons. MCINTYRE, IDA M., 89, of Berlin, died Feb. 10. Born in 1910 in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of Pierre and Zelia (Gagne) Bouchard. She graduated from Lawrence High School and attended Boston University and the Danvers School of Nursing. She married Joseph P. McIntyre. She was a registered nurse, working in the Metropolitan State Hospital in Waltham, Mass. and the McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. Born in 1926 in Williamstown, he was the son of Avila and Maude (Jeannette) Couillard. He graduated from Spaulding High School. He served in the Army Air Force. He began employed at Couillard's Heating Oils in Barre in 1948, retiring in 1988. In 1950, he married Jeannine Bergeron. WEBSTER, OLIVE A., 89, of Montpelier died Feb. 14. Born in 1910 in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of Fernando and Sarah (Colby) Ayer. She attended Manchester schools and graduated from Keene State with a teaching degree. In 1933, she married Russell G. Webster, who predeceased her. The family moved to Vermont in 1956 and settled in East Montpelier and later moved to Montpelier. She was an art teacher in many Washington County rural schools and was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ. Born in 1919 in Lynn, Mass., she was the daughter of Henry and Charlotte (Booth) Wentworth. She graduated from Saugus High School in Saugus, Mass. She attended Jackson College for Women and Framingham State College, both in Mass. In 1940, she married Edmond Sorrie. They moved to Barre Town in 1972. She was a bookkeeper for Zayre's Department Store and a tax collector for Fire District 5 in Barre Town. She was a member of the Barre Congregational Church. Born in 1942 in Northfield, he was the son of Leroy and Rosemond Trombley. He graduated from Northfield High School and served in the Navy. CARR, LUCINA CUMMINGS, 86, formerly of East Montpelier, died Feb. 14. Born in 1913 in East Montpelier, she was the daughter of Edgar and Jennie (Staples) Cummings. She graduated from Montpelier High School and received an associate's degree from Lasalle Junior College in Mass. In 1937, she married Wendell Carr. She was an assistant librarian at the Dana Medical Library at the University of Vermont for 25 years and a member of the First Congregational Church. Survivors include two sons, Wendell and Rodney; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. O'NEILL, JOHN "JACK", 77, of Northfield, died Feb. 15. Born in 1922 in Rutherford, N.J., he was the son of John and Alice (Cleak) O'Neill. He graduated from Norwich University. In 1960, he married Isabel Watson, who died in 1989. He was an associate professor emeritus in chemistry at Norwich University and had served in the Army during WWII. Survivors include several cousins. LAWRENCE, VICTOR M., 78, of Barre, died Feb. 16. Born in 1921 in Waterbury, he was the son of Charles and Jessie (Fairwell) Lawrence. He attended Waterbury schools. He worked on several farms in Waterbury. He retired from employment as a dietary technician at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury. He was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Waterbury. Survivors include two cousins, Louise Sherman and JoAnn Pecor. CARR, KATHERINE B., 80, formerly of Calais, died Feb. 9. Born in 1919 in Plainfield, she attended school in East Calais and graduated from Plainfield High School. She attended business college in Boston and was employed in that area. She married Robert Carr and moved to Pittsburgh. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Kehr and Susan Carr; a sister. Her husband predeceased her. GUTZMANN, LILLIAN I., 90, of Craftsbury, died Feb. 20. Born in 1909 in Everett, Mass., she was the daughter of John and Ethel (Tait) Stoker Sr. She graduated from Arlington High School in Arlington, Mass. In 1938, she married Walter C. Gutzmann, who died in 1958. They moved to Craftsbury in 1946 and purchased the Craftsbury Inn, which Mrs. Gutzmann operated until 1968. She later was a teller at Merchants Bank in Hardwick, retiring in the late 1970s. She was a member of the United Church of Craftsbury. Born in 1916 in Roxbury, he was the son of Joseph and Josephine (Pinkham) Tierney. He lived in Cornish, N.H. as a youth and attended schools in Cornish, Plainfield and Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H. He moved to Northfield in 1943 after marrying Gladys R. Coutts. She predeceased him in 1992. He was a veteran of WWII, having served it he Army. He worked as a stonecutter in the granite industry in Montpelier and Barre, retiring in the early 1980s. He was also employed by the National Life Insurance Company of Vermont and P&C Food Market in Northfield. Survivors include four children, Gayla Tierney, Michael Tierney, Brigitte (Mrs. Terry) Lackey and Guy Tierney; one brother; four sisters; five grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. BROUGHTON, KENNETH C., 47, formerly of Montpelier, died Feb. 12. Born in 1953 in Montpelier, he was the son of Harry and Emmaline (Hopkins) Broughton. He graduated from Montpelier High School. In 1996, he married Lorraine Kymes in Ohio, they moved to Largo, Fla. in 1997. He was a member of the Church of God Prophecy (New Life Ministries) and a pastor of several churches. Born in 1939 in Colchester, he was the son of Robert C. Springer Sr. and Helen I. Shaw. He graduated from Spaulding High School and in 1968, married Gloria Hutchinson. CROUSE, DOROTHY M., 84, of Montpelier, died Feb. 19. Born in West Lebanon, N.H., she was the daughter of Fred and Myrtle (Lumbard) Riopelle. She attended schools in Swanton, Montpelier and Mass. MILNE, ETHEL ANNE, 90, of Barre, died Feb. 17. Born in 1909 in Barre, she was the daughter of John and Jennie (Riddel) Milne. She attended Spaulding High School. She worked as a sales clerk at Woolworth's Department Store in Barre and later as a cook at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Barre. CHARTIER, ANTOINE E., 64, formerly of So. Barre, died Feb. 15. Born in 1936 in Barre, he was the son of Joseph and Orilla (Landry) Chartier. He graduated from Spaulding High School and served in the Navy. He married Donna Marsha and lived in Keene, N.H. and Florida. He owned and operated Tony's Power Equipment in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., retiring in 1998. Survivors include two daughters, Marcy Blad and Laurie Chartier; two brothers; six sisters; three grandchildren. CAMPBELL, CURTIS, 75, of Montpelier died Feb. 20. Born in 1924, he was the son of Charles and Sadie (Curtis) Campbell. He graduated from Montpelier High School and served in the Navy during WWII. He was a longtime employee of the US Postal Service, first in Montpelier and later in Worcester. He was also a skilled carpenter and journeyman electrician and had worked for Maxham Supply in Worcester. In 1963, he married Alice Alexander, who died in 1985. Born in Barre, he was the son of Matthew and Margaret (White) Fitzgerald Sr. He attended Spaulding High School and graduated from Troy High School in New York. He was married to Carmela (Coletti) Fitzgerald, who died in 1974. He had served in the Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean War. He was a machinist and a reamer technician at Watervliet Arsenal, retiring in 1985. He had lived in Pittstown, N.Y. since 1959. Survivors include three sons, Michael, Matthew III and Stephen Sr.; a brother; a sister; six grandchildren. GADAREE, RICHARD R., 77, formerly of Waterbury, died Feb. 19. Born in 1922 in Waterbury, he was the son of Leon and Agnes (Herbert) Gadaree. He graduated from Waterbury High School and in 1946, married Eva E. Herbert. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII. He was a Vermont state trooper and also worked in real estate and in security at General Electric. Survivors include a son, Bruce; two sister. LASORSA, RENO R., 75, formerly of Barre, died Feb. 18. Born in 1924 in Elberton, GA, he was the son of Sabino and Aurelia Lasorsa. The family returned to Barre where he attended Barre schools and graduated from Spaulding High School. He attended the University of Illinois and served in the Army during WWII. In 1953, he married Helen Paxenos. His professional career was in the marketing field, mainly in the employ of Dow-Corning Intl. in MI. Survivors include his wife; a son, Matt; two granddaughters. WATHLEY, ETHEL M., 99, of Randolph Center, died Feb. 23. Born in 1900 in Sharon, Conn., she was the daughter of Bertrand and Jennie (Linner) Shaw. She attended schools in Kent, Conn. In 1925, she married Frank Wathley, who died in 1970. She was a member of the Kent Congregational Church. She had worked at the Lee Hat Factory in Danbury, Conn., moving to Randolph Center in 1970. Survivors include two sons, Edward and Norman; two daughters, Alice Lake and Dorothy Wathley; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. NABONI, ANGELO, 76, of Berlin, died Feb. 26. Born in 1923 in Montpelier, he was the son of Peter and Maria (Perlotti) Naboni. He graduated from the former St. Michael's High School. He served in the 282nd Combat Engineer Battalion during WWII. In earlier years, he was a tool sharpener at Desilets Granite Co. in Montpelier and for 25 years, owned and operated Angelo's Tool Co. Survivors include a brother, Emery Naboni; and a niece. His companion, Norma Ciampi, predeceased him. PARKS, PATRICIA A. "PATTY", 69, of East Montpelier, died Feb. 25. Born in 1930 in Barre, she was the daughter of Langdon and Thelma (Miles) Cummings Sr. She graduated from Spaulding High School. In 1950, she married Winston Parks, who died in 1990. She was a sales clerk at Allan Milne Pharmacy in Barre and later worked at Brooks Pharmacy. She was a member of the Barre Universalist Church. HAYWARD, JUDEE, LELA, 57, of Barre, died Feb. 24. Born in 1942 in Barre, she was the daughter of Ray and Lillian (Moody) Hayward. She attended North Barre Elementary School and graduated from Montpelier High School. She had been employed at the Inglenook Lodge at Jay Peak and more recently, had worked for the Washington County Mental Health Services and as a substitute teacher for the Barre City school system. She attended the Barre Evangelical Free Church. Barre, died Feb. 25. Born in 1912 in Corinth, she was the daughter of John and Ethel (Clark) Williams. The family moved to Chelsea in 1922. She attended school in Chelsea and Corinth. In 1933, she married Theodore Ladd, who died in 1965. After her husband's death, she assumed ownership and management of a trucking company, the Tedd Ladd Motor Transfer Company, retiring in 1996. Born in 1958, she was the daughter of William and Karlene (Martin) Stone. She graduated from Spaulding High School. In 1980, she married David Reed. She was a dispatcher for the Barre City Police Department and corporate secretary of Stone's Service Station Inc. She had served in the Air Force from 1978-83 and had been a volunteer at Twinfield Elementary School. In 1932, she married Percy Manning, who died in 1981. She worked at St. Joseph's Orphanage in Burlington and was a member of St. Augustine's Church. He owned and operated the U-Loc-It-Security Self-Storage in Alamosa, CO, where he currently resided. In 1929, she married Walter Flint, who died in 1959. She and her husband operated the Rexall Drug Store in Newport and after the death of her husband, she worked for Dr. Schurmann and Dr. Mosher and was a housemother at the Elizabeth Lund Home in Burlington. In 1963, she married Charles Litchfield, who died in 1987. Born in 1933 in Randolph, he was the son of Emile and Abbie (Hazen) Merusi. He graduated from Randolph High School and married Mary Abel. He was a printer's apprentice and later manager of Haggett Press in Randolph. He bought the business and it is now known as Beacon Printing. Born in 1925 in Houston, Texas, he was the son of Benjamin and Mabel (Dalton) Andrews Jr. He attended the Phillips Andover Preparatory School in Andover, Mass. He served in the Army during WWII and the Korean War. He had represented the town of Vershire in 1961 in the Vermont House of Representatives. He began a career in real estate in 1965, was president of the Central Vermont Board of Realtors and founder of the Central Vermont Multiple Listing Service. In 1974, he married Ellen Richardson. BORDEAUX, PATSY A., 41, of Waterbury Center, died Feb. 23. Born in 1958 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of Fred and Patricia (Herbert) Sweetser. She attended Harwood Union High School and in 1989, married Glenn Bouchard. She was employed as an aide at Stowe Elementary School and at National Life Insurance Co. More recently she was a clerk at the Stowe IGA and the Stowe Car Wash. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church. Born in Middlebury, he was the son of Stephen and Donna (Cunningham) Merchant. He grew up in central Vermont and Illinois, where he graduated from Conant High School. He returned to central Vermont and graduated from Norwich University and the United States Coast Guard Officer Candidate School. He was commissioned as a Coast Guard Officer and was stationed on Coast Guard Island in Oakland, Calif. In 1999, he married Lara (Walz) Merchant. BOARDMAN, LORRAINE, 82, formerly of Barre, died Feb. 28. Born in 1917 in Barre, she was the daughter of Louis and Emelia (Therrien) Fisher. She graduated from Spaulding High School and attended Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in Burlington. In 1938, she married Vernon Boardman, who died in 1987. They had retired to Florida in 1974. PHANEUF, MARGARET M., 75, of Waterbury, died March 2. Born in 1924 in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Teresa (Ferguson) and John Burns McKechnie. In 1942, she married John Phaneuf, who died in 1974. She graduated from St. Anne's Academy in Marlboro, Mass. and worked for the Diamond Shoe Co. there as a seamstress. In 1967, she moved to Waterbury and worked at the Lobster Pot Restaurant in Montpelier later becoming a psychiatric technician at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury. She retired in 1980. EWEN, ARNOLD J., 40, formerly of Hardwick, died Feb. 22. Born in 1959 in Hardwick, he was the son of Bernard and Thelma (Gochey) Ewen. Born in 1912 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of William and Ruby (Demas) Thompson. She attended schools in Middletown, Conn. In 1942, she married Thornton Storr. She had worked as a secretary in the Hartford and Middletown areas. She moved to Ravena, N.Y. and was a seamstress in a women's lingerie factory. In 1993, she moved to Montpelier. She was an accomplished organist who wrote and arranged her own music. STORY, BARBARA B., 78, formerly of Waitsfield and more recently from Hancock, died March 3. Born in 1922 in Waitsfield, she was the daughter of William and Carolyn (Bover) Graves. She graduated from Waitsfield High School and Johnson Normal School. She returned to Johnson State College to receive her Human Services degree. In 1942, she married Lee Story, who died in 1985. She taught elementary education in Hancock, Waitsfield and Granville. She and her husband moved to Connecticut, where she worked as an engineering aide at Pratt & Whitney. They returned to Hancock in 1968. Her memberships included the Rochester Federated Church. Barre, died March 5. Born in 1918 in So. Barre, she was the daughter of Euclid and Sadie (George) Rock. She graduated from Spaulding High School, Goddard College and the University of Vermont. She had worked at Granite City Creamery and the Barre Recreation Department. She later worked for Jones Brothers Granite Co., Houle-Giudici Granite Co. and retired from S. L. Born in 1913 in Moretown, she was the daughter of Douglas J.A. and Hortense (Sturtevant) Cooke. She graduated from Montpelier High School. In 1933, she married Willard H. McManis and later she married Clifton Haggett, who predeceased her. She was a realtor in Vermont and Florida and was also a baker in Vermont and Connecticut. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Montpelier. She was educated in Kansas and became an elementary school teacher. She moved to Connecticut in the early 1920s. She worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C., Russell Asbestos Mill in Northfield Falls, the former Heaton Hospital in Montpelier and the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles. McDONOUGH, DOROTHEA E., 69, of Moretown, died March 7. Born in 1930 in Lynn Brook, N.Y., she was the daughter of Frank and Mary (Sullivan) Fisher. She was a board member and past president of the Central Vermont Association for Retarded Citizens. She was co-founder of the Serving Group for Special Needs People at Bethany Church, Montpelier and volunteered for the Adult Developmental Disabilities Center in Barre. She was the legal guardian for two mentally challenged and physically handicapped women. She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Moretown. NELSON, EDWIN C., 92, of Vershire, died March 6. Born in 1908 in Perth Amboy, N.J., he was the son of Andrew and Alma (Olsen) Nelson. KING, ALICE TOMKIEVICH, 69, of Barre, died March 9. Born in 1930 in East Hartford, Conn., she was the daughter of Stanley and Edna (King) Tomkievich. After the death of her parents at age 10, she was adopted by her grandparents, Victor and Louisa (Hopewell) King. She graduated from Wellesley College in Mass. and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology. She married Donald S. Barber, M.D. and they made their home in Johnson and later she moved to Essex Jct. She was a homemaker and had been a medical technician in earlier years. Born in 1911 in Burlington, he was the son of Martin and Eva (Cross) Robbins. He attended high school in Burlington and served in the Army during WWII. In 1943, he married Olive Green, who predeceased him. They moved to Barre from Montpelier in 1950. He was an interior decorator and salesman at the Hooker Furniture Store, Chellis Collins Home Furnishings and Kendall Lawson Furniture Store. He later managed the Carpet Center in Berlin and Barre. MAURICE, 82, of Barre City, died March 18. Born in 1917 in Washington, he was the son of J. Arthur and Ruth (Hood) Partridge. He graduated from Spaulding High School and joined the Navy, serving during WWII. He retired in 1983 as a diesel mechanic with the Hill-Martin Corp. in Barre. She received her education in Carlsbad and in 1925, married Achilles C. Folinas. They moved to Montpelier, where they owned and operated Pine's Restaurant through the 1950s. They moved Florida, retiring in 1969. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormand Beach, FL. Born in 1918 in Lowell, Mass., she was the daughter of Peter and Mary (Alexopoulos) Savas. She graduated from Lowell High School and later attended Lowell Commercial College. She had worked for the Veterinarian Services Division of the U.S. Government Dept. of Agriculture from 1949-1955 and returned to that office in 1965, retiring in 1989. NAPP, E. EDWARD, M.D., 93, of Northfield, died March 15. Born in 1907 in New York City, he was the son of Joseph and Rose (Caputo) Napp. He graduated from Columbia University and New York Medical College. In 1938, he married Ruth Helen Marschalk, who died in 1980. He served in the Navy Medical Corps during WWII. His medical career spanned 50 years. He practiced and taught obstetrics and gynecology in New York City, was a clinical professor at New York City Medical College, director of gynecology at Bird S. MILLER, CAROLYN F., 80, of Waterbury, died March 20. Born in 1920 in Waterbury, she was the daughter of Fred and Pearl (Russell) Fahner. She was employed at the Vermont State Hospital as a psychiatric technician and later worked as the bookkeeper for Miller Construction of Waterbury Center, which she helped operate with her husband. She graduated from Skidmore College as a music major. She received her master's degree of Arts and Teaching at National College of Education in Evanston, Ill. In 1942, she married Robert K. She grew up in St. Camille, Wolfe County, Quebec and in 1933, married Bernard Napoleon Lamothe, who died in 1981. She had been a resident of Barre for over 50 years. She received her teaching certificate from the Unsaline Bistens in Three Rivers, Quebec and taught in a one-room schoolhouse before coming to the United States. She later worked at Sprague Electric Company in Barre. She was a member of St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake. Survivors include two daughters, Sr. Mary Theresa Lamothe and Marianne Everit; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. LEE, JOSEPH F., 92, of Marshfield, died April 3. Born in 1903 in Rutherford, N.J., he spent his boyhood in New York City and at Rocklee, the family's farm in Sullivan County, N.Y. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes School and graduated from Regis High School and from Fordham University. He worked as a marine chemist in the New York area and retired in 1972 to Rutland. He was a member of the St. Peter's Church in Rutland. He had lived with his son in Marshfield for the past eight years. Barre and later worked at the Howard Johnson's restaurant. Born in 1916 in Chelsea, she was the daughter of Albert and Irene (Cota) Austin. She attended Chelsea schools and was married to Glenn Kennedy in 1940. Mr. Kennedy died in 1991. She did housekeeping for various people in Chelsea and was a member of the Chelsea Methodist Church.
