Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 257 George William MANN, real estate, Barre [Washington County, Vermont], was born 02 August 1846 at Plainfield [Washington County, Vermont], son of Abram and Lucia (DARLING) MANN. Educated in the public schools. Was engaged in farming until he was twenty-four years of age. In 1870 he came to Barre, and a year later began the trade of granite cutter in the only stone shed in town; then only 1,800 of them in the township. In 1875 he opened a third shed in Barre, employing two men. In 1877 purchased a stone quarry for $700, later selling it for $3,000, which is now valued at $30,000. Put in the first steam powered polishing machine in Barre, paying $400 for the outfit, and eight years later selling it for $3,000. In 1886 bought another quarry of four acres of Wetmore & Morse, known as Mann's quarry, and in 1904 sold it to Marr & Gordon for $20,000. Retired from the granite business in 1894, since which time he has engaged in the real estate business, having erected upwards of forty dwelling houses which he now owns and rents. Republican. Member of the Evangelical Church and its class leader. In 1874 George W. MANN married [Miss?] Mary Ellen WHEELER of Barre; they had three children: Walter Edgar (deceased), Frank Ernest (deceased), and Jennie Ethel (Mrs. E. M.
