Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 256 James MACKAY, city clerk and treasurer, Barre [Washington County, Vermont], was born 14 March 1861 at Aberdeen, Scotland, son of William and Isabelle (STEVENSON) MACKAY. Educated at the public schools in Aberdeen. Learned the trade of granite cutting in Aberdeen. Came to Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, in 1882. In 1884 located in Barre, following the occupation of granite cutter until 1892, when he entered the firm of Imlah & Company and engaged in granite manufacturing until 1902. In that year he assumed the position of manager of the Barre Granite Exchange, relinquishing it the following year to assume the office of city clerk and treasurer, which he still holds. Republican; has served as alderman of the Third Ward for three years, and president of the board of aldermen. Presbyterian. Is a Mason, and a member of the Order of Scottish Clans, the Knights of Pythias, and the Modern Woodmen of America. In 1885 Mr. [James] MACKAY married [Miss?] Agnes Law ROBERTSON of Dunfermline, Scotland; they have five children: William Kerr, James Robertson, George Fleming, Roy, and Hazel Isabel.
