LANIER, accountant, Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 20 May 1878 at Barre [Washington County, Vermont], son of Amos and Clementine (LABANCHIERE) LANIER. Educated at St. Michael's School, Montpelier, and at Albany Business College. In 1898 he was employed as bookkeeper for Edward Norton and Company, Bennington, and was later a traveling salesman for the same firm for four years. Has also been employed as an accountant in Lynn [Essex County], Massachusetts, and as financial manager of Cross Brothers, Northfield [Washington County, Vermont]. Has been treasurer of the Empire Granite & Quarry Company, and as such, was joint inventor of the Chase patent granite saw, the machine that revolutionized the granite world. Was one of the incorporators of the American Granite Saw Company, Worcester [Worcester County], Massachusetts. Republican. Member of the Roman Catholic Church. Member of the United Commerical Travelers of America.
