KNAPP was born 26 February 1809 in Berlin [Washington County, Vermont]. Served an apprenticeship in a printing office in Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont]. Elected reporter for the Legislature in 1833. Co-proprietor and editor for some years of the "State Journal." Elected secretary of state in 1836, in which capacity he served four years. Removing to Massachusetts, was elected secretary of the Massachusetts Senate in 1851; was elected to the Thirty-fourth and re-elected to the Thirty-fifth Congress. To him was awarded the credit, while editing the "Journal," of first nominating General HARRISON for the presidency, which resulted in his obtaining the electoral votes of Vermont four years before he was really elected.
