Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, pp 234-235 Joseph Wells JACKSON, physician and surgeon, Barre [Washington County, Vermont], was born 25 April 1868 at Stockholm [St. Lawrence County], New York, son of Dr. John Henry and Anna Dutton (WELLS) JACKSON. Educated at Barre Academy; Goddard Seminary, graduated 1886; Queen's College, Kingston, Ontario [Canada], one year, and medical department University of Vermont, graduated 1890. After receiving degree spent three years in hospital work, serving as house surgeon at Mary Fletcher Hospital, Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont]; Butler Hospital for the Insane, Providence [Providence County], Rhode Island, and Danvers (Massachusetts) Lunatic Hospital [Essex County]. Was instrumental in starting the Barre City Hospital, and is one of the trustees and treasurer of that institution; is now working on some solution for the care and treatment of the ever increasing cases of tuberculosis in his home city. Appointed assistant surgeon of First Regiment Vermont Volunteers at the outbreak of Spanish-American War; at Chickamauga Park was on duty in First division Third corps hospital as ward surgeon; in charge of the hospital train bringing the sick of the regiment back to Vermont, and on duty at Fort Ethan Allen hospital until all were recovered. Democrat. Appointed to the board of pension examiners for Washington County, February 1901, he has held the office of secretary since; health officer for city of Barre at various times, holding the office at present, having been re-appointed in August 1911; elected school commissioner from Ward Six, March 1910, for three years; has devoted much time in an effort to have physical training carried on in the public schools. Member Congregational Church; served several years on business committee; scout master for troop of boy scouts connected with the church. Member Granite Lodge No. 35, Free & Accepted Masons; past high priest of Granite Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; past commander of St. Aldemar Commandery No. 11; potentate of Mount Sinai Temple, Mystic Shrine, having been elected in December 1911, and as such attended the meeting of the imperial council held in Los Angeles, May 1912, as chairman of his delegation.
