Washington HUSE, Hiram Augustus Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 216-217 (portrait p 216) Hiram Augustus HUSE, of Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 17 January 1843 at Randolph [Orange County, Vermont], son of Hiram Sylvester and Emily Morgan (BLODGETT) HUSE. His parents moved to Wisconsin in 1845, and that was his home until 1868. In the West he went to school at the red schoolhouse at Willard Seminary in Watertown [Jefferson County], Wisconsin, and at Dixon [Lee County], Illinois, and taught district school several terms. In 1860 he went to Randolph where he fitted for college (in part under Edward CONANT), at the Orange County grammar school, and also taught district school again, and in 1871-1872 was Mr. [Edward] CONANT's assistant in the State Normal School. While in college Mr. HUSE enlisted, 19 August 1862 at Randolph, and served as a private in Company F, Twelfth Vermont Volunteers, until the regiment was mustered out 14 July 1863. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1865, and from the Albany Law School (of which Amos DEAN, formerly of Barnard [Windsor County, Vermont] was then the head), in 1867, and was admitted to the New York bar in Albany [Albany County]. After a year at his home in Wisconsin, he moved to Vermont, where he was admitted to the Vermont bar in Orange County, June term, 1869. He moved to Montpelier in 1872, beginning the practice of law, and for some ten years served as editorial writer on the "Green Mountain Freeman." He has been state librarian since 1873, represented Montpelier in the Legislature of 1878, and was elected state's attorney in 1882. On 01 January 1883 a law partnership was formed by Clarence H. PITKIN and himself, under the firm name of Pitkin & Huse, which continued seven years. At the close of William P. DILLINGHAM's term as Governor in October 1890, the partnership of Dillingham & Huse was formed, and by the admission of Fred A. HOWLAND, in 1892, the firm is now Dillingham, Huse & Howland. Mr. [Hiram Augustus] HUSE's mother [Emily Morgan (BLODGETT) HUSE] died at his home in Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont] on 29 May 1890, and his father [Hiram Sylvester HUSE] now resides with him. Hiram Augustus HUSE is a comrade of Brooks Post, Grand Army of the Republic, and a member of Aurora Lodge, Free & Accepted Masons, and of the Sons of the American Revolution. On 30 January 1872 at Randolph [Orange County, Vermont], Mr. [Hiram Augustus] HUSE married Harriet (SMITH) WOODBURY. They have two children: Harriet Emily, and Ray Woodbury. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
