Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 160-161 (portrait p 161) Jonas Eli GOODENOUGH, of Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 27 October 1860 in Berlin [Washington County, Vermont], son of Alonzo F. and Elizabeth (ROULSTON) GOODENOUGH, on the farm originally bought and settled on by Joseph GOODENOUGH in 1794. Educated in the district schools and Washington County grammar school; taught school several winters; studied dentistry with Dr. O. P. FORBUSH of Montpelier, receiving a certificate of qualification form the state board of dental examiners. On 01 August 1884 he entered the Montpelier post office as clerk under Postmaster George W. WING, and was appointed assistant postmaster 16 June 1888, which position he held until the expiration of the term of Mr. WING"s successor, Mr. MORSE, when Mr. GOODENOUGH was appointed postmaster by President HARRISON, taking possession of the office 01 August 1892; has administered the duties of the office to the satisfaction of the entire community and made many improvements in the service. Member of Aurora Lodge No. 22, Free & Accepted Masons, of which he has been Master; member of King Solomon Lodge, Royal Arch Chapter, and Mt. Zion Commandery. On 18 February 1889 Mr. [Jonas Eli] GOODENOUGH married Eliza P., daughter of James H. and Catharine B. HOLDEN, of Middlesex [Washington County, Vermont]. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
