Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 198 Benjamin GATES, lawyer, Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 06 August 1873 at Pittsford [Rutland County, Vermont], son of Amos L. and Isabella (JOHNSON) GATES. Educated at Brandon Graded School [Rutland County], Montpelier Seminary, and the Law Department of the University of Michigan. Admitted to the Vermont bar in 1903. Enlisted in Company A, First Regiment Connecticut Volunteers, served as a private during the Spanish-American War at Fort Knox [Waldo County], Maine, and at Camp Alger, Virginia [just outside Washington, D. C.], and was honorably discharged in 1898. Republican; was deputy clerk of Washington County Court from 1899 to 1901; second assistant state librarian from 1902 to 1903; city grand juror from 1904 to 1906; state's attorney for Washington County 1906 to 1910. Methodist. Member of the Modern Woodmen of America, Knights of Pythias, Masons, Vermont Historical Society, Montpelier Historical Society, The Club (a literary institution); Vermont and Washington County Bar Associations; and state lecturer and counsel of the local camp in Modern Woodmen of America.
