(DUDLEY) FOSTER. [Note in the Washington County, Vermont, biography of Alonzo M. FOSTER, that he married an Elsie W. DUDLEY. Unknown to submitter, who is not researching this surname, if Elsie W. DUDLEY and Louisa Rich DUDLEY were related.] He [Herbert Sidney FOSTER] was educated in the public schools, Goddard Seminary, Barre [Washington County], and U. S. Military Academy, West Point [Orange County], New York. Mr. FOSTER served as an officer in the U. S. Army from 15 June 1876 to 06 October 1906. [Herbert S. FOSTER was enumerated with about fifty others, most of whom were privates, in the 1880 census of Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas.] Mr. FOSTER was in service in the Spanish-American War; was in the battles of El Caney, Cuba, 01 July, and Santiago, 2nd and 3rd of July, and 10th and 11th of July, 1898; served in the Philippine insurrection; in battles at St. Guadaloupe Church, Luzon, 06 Mar 1899; Pasig, Luzon, 08 Mar 1899; and Cainta, Luzon, 09 Mar 1899; retired from active service with rank of colonel on 06 Oct 1906. Mr. FOSTER has since engaged in farming. Republican; delegate to various conventions, county, district, and state; justice of the peace. In religious preference a Universalist. Member of the Sons of Veterans; Military Order of the Loyal Legion; Military Order of Foreign Wars; Society of Santiago de Cuba; Sons of the American Revolution; Vermont Historical Society; Montpellier Historical Society; Calais Grange, Patrons of Husbandry; Winooski Valley Pomona Grange, Patrons of Husbandry; American Civic Alliance; and the Green Mountain Club. Has held the offices of sergeant of the guard and captain in Camp 19, Sons of Veterans, Burlington; and in Camp 39, North Calais, has been commander, secretary two terms, patriotic instructor two terms, chaplain, and member of the council two terms; in Vermont Division, lieutenant-colonel and colonel 1891 and 1892, patriotic instructor two terms, member of council two terms; member of military committee two terms in the commandery-in-chief, Sons of Veterans; member of council two terms in Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the U. S., Vermont Commandery; judge advocate, and treasurer two terms in Military Order of Foreign Wars of the U. S., Vermont Commandery; member of board of managers three terms, chairman of the board two terms in Sons of the American Revolution, Vermont Society; master one term in Calais Grange, Patrons of Husbandry; lecturer two terms in Winooski Valley Pomona Grange, Patrons of Husbandry; and governor for state of Vermont in American Civic Alliance. In 1884 Mr. [Herbert Sidney] FOSTER married [Miss?] Laura A. KENT of Boston [Suffolk County], Massachusetts [who was born 02 March 1853 at Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont]; they have three children: Forest Kent, Sidney Herbert, and Louise Evangeline.
