Washington DWINELL, Frank A. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 115-116 (portrait p 115) Frank A. DWINELL, of Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 23 May 1848 at East Calais [Washington County, Vermont], son of Albert and Irene D. (RICH) DWINELL. Received his education from the common schools of his native place and graduated from Barre Academy, class of 1868; began business in active life in his father's store at East Calais, remaining until 1874, when he removed to Plainfield [Washington County] and engaged in the mercantile business, which he successfully carried on for a number of years. In 1885 the Farmers' Trust Company was organized. Mr. DWINELL was elected president, at once taking an active interest in the management, which position he has retained up to this time. Under the conservative policy and prudent management inaugurated, and which has always been maintained, a strong financial corporation has been built up. In consequence of his connection with this company, he moved to Montpelier in the spring of 1890. On 15 December 1870 at East Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont] he [Frank A. DWINELL] was married to Hattie A., daughter of Lawson and Asenath (CLARK) HAMMETT. Two children are the issue of this marriage: Elbert Hammond and Melvin Raymond. [Elbert's middle name, Hammond, suggests some connection to Joseph Hammond DWINELL, who is mentioned in the Orleans County, Vermont, biography of Joseph Elmer DWINELL.] In politics Mr. DWINELL is a Republican; takes an active interest in political affairs; has held several public offices; was for a number of years town clerk and treasurer of Plainfield; elected to the General Assembly of 1878; in 1890 elected senator from Washington County and was elected president pro tempore of the Senate; also served on several important committees.
