DILLON, of Putnamsville [Washington County, Vermont], was born 17 July 1850 in East Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], son of William and Sarah (MEGAW) DILLON. He received the usual privileges of a farmer's son, attending the district schools of his native town and the Washington County grammar school. Soon after he went into a railroad office and learned the art of telegraphy; subsequently he acted as bookkeeper for John C. Dow & Company, of Lawrence [Essex County], Massachusetts; afterwards engaged with C. C. Putnam & Sons of Putnamsville as clerk, bookkeeper, and overseer of their extensive business; remained with them fourteen years; is now interested in the granite and insurance business at Barre [Washington County, Vermont]; has also become the owner of some valuable properties near Hardwick [Caledonia County, Vermont]; was appointed postmaster by the Republican administration of 1881; held that position until his resignation in July 1892; has been justice of the peace during nearly his entire residence in Middlesex [Washington County, Vermont], which town elected him representative in 1892; served on the general committee; has always been interested in public affairs; when called to public office has conscientiously discharged his duties and responsibilities to the general satisfaction of those who have entrusted him with the various positions he has assumed. On 15 December 1880 Mr. [John W.] DILLON was married to Belle M., daughter of G. M. and Mary S. (PUTNAM) WHITNEY, of Middlesex [Washington County, Vermont]; they have one child living: Grace E.
