DeMERITT, canning business, Waterbury [Washington County, Vermont], was born in 1850 at Waterbury Center [Washington County, Vermont], son of Albert and Laura (SMITH) DEMERITT. Educated at Green Mountain Seminary, Waterbury Center. Was engaged as a commercial traveler, selling candy and cigars for H. S. HOWE, Rutland [Rutland County, Vermont], from 1871-1885, was in the cracker and candy business at Plattsburg [Clinton County, New York] from 1885-1905. In 1905 went into the canning business at Waterbury. When the DeMeritt & Palmer Packing Company was organized, he was made president, which office he still holds. Democrat. Member and trustee of the Methodist Church, and superintendent of the Sunday school. Member Winooski Lodge No. 49, Free & Accepted Masons; Waterbury Chapter No. 24, Royal Arch Masons; Mount Zion Commandery No. 9, Knights Templar, Montpelier; and Oriental Temple, Mystic Shrine, Troy, New York. In 1874 Mr. [Richard N.] DeMERITT married [Miss?] Elizabeth D. STEARNS of Waterbury; they had three sons: Homer D., Henry H., and Roy S. After his first wife's death in 1896, Richard N.
