DEAVITT, lawyer and banker, Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 17 February 1840 at Richmond [Chittenden County, Vermont], son of William and Chestina (PRESTON) DEAVITT. Educated in the public schools of Moretown, Barre Academy [both in Washington County]; studied law three years with the Hon. Paul DILLINGHAM, Waterbury [Washington County]. In 1863 worked in a guncap and currycomb factory in Troy [Rensselaer County], New York. Returned to Waterbury, read law, and was admitted to the Vermont bar 1866; began practice at Moretown; after six years removed to Montpelier, where he continued his practice. Was director, treasurer, and manager of the Watchman Publishing Company for several years, and edited a popular department in the Vermont Watchman called "Soldiers' Budget." In 1870 he [Thomas J. DEAVITT] married [Miss?] Carrie E. HARRINGTON of South Royalston [Worchester County], Massachusetts; they have five children: Edward H. [whose biography follows], Henry M., Carrie E., George T., and William J. Mr. DEAVITT is a Republican; was superintendent of schools, Moretown; member of the first constitutional convention, held in 1870; president of the Capital Savings Bank and Trust Company since its organization in 1891; director in Barre and Montpelier Electric Railway Company; a director of other companies; justice of the peace. Edward Harrington DEAVITT, lawyer, Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 01 December 1871 at Moretown [Washington County, Vermont], son of Thomas Jefferson and Caroline Ellen (HARRINGTON) DEAVITT. Educated in the public schools of Montpelier, University of Vermont, class of 1893; Harvard Law School, class of 1896. Admitted to the bar of Suffolk County, Massachusetts, and to the Vermont bar 1896; practiced one year in Boston [Suffolk County, Massachusetts], and since at Montpelier; member of the board of bar examiners; a director of the First National Bank of Montpelier; a director and treasurer of the Barre & Montpelier Traction and Power Company; Corry-Deavitt-Frost Electric Company; Capital City Gas Company; and Wetmore & Morse Granite Company. Republican; referee in bankruptcy for Washington County 1898-1906; state treasurer and ex-officio one of the insurance commissioners since 1906. Member of Apollo Club of Montpelier.
