Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 167-168 Frank R. DAWLEY, merchant, Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], was born 18 January 1851 at Mt. Holly [Rutland County, Vermont], son of Perry Alvinso and Rhoda S. (BARBER) DAWLEY. Educated in the public schools of Shrewsbury, Mt. Holly, and East Wallingford [all in Rutland County]. Mr. DAWLEY came to Montpelier in 1873, and in 1884 became associated with H. R. WHEELOCK in the printing, picture framing, and sporting goods business. Mr. DAWLEY is a locksmith and safe opener of statewide reputation. Independent Republican; was school collector Berlin 1891-1892; lister Berlin 1893, 1894, and 1898; constable 1895-1899; in 1899 was elected lister in Montpelier for three years, and re-elected in 1902; constable Montpelier 1901-1902; truant officer 1895-1903; in 1904 elected alderman from Ward Six, serving four years; president of the board 1907; in 1908 nominated for mayor on the second ballot in a citizens' caucus, and elected at the March meeting; in 1910 elected to serve a third term as mayor, making seven years continuous service in the city council; during the seven years never missed a regular meeting of the board, and never made a motion to adjourn. The new city hall was built during his administration. During his term of office he safeguarded Montpelier's water supply by acquiring land around the ponds that furnish the city drinking water. An associate member of the Grand Army of the Republic; member of Vermont Lodge No. 2, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; Thomas Wildey Encampment No. 11, I. O. O. F.; Montpelier Lodge No 13, Knights of Pythias; Susadah Temple No. 140, Knights of Khorassan; charter member of Montpelier Board of Trade, and the Montpelier Gun Club; life member of State Historical Society. In 1882 Mr. [Frank R.] DAWLEY married [Miss?] Cora M. MILES of Montpelier; she [Cora M. DAWLEY] died in 1904. They had two children: Eva M., and Angie R. (deceased). Submitted by Cathy Kubly
