DANA, manufacturer, Fayston [Washington County, Vermont, was born 18 May 1833 at Warren [Washington County, Vermont], son of Samuel and Calista (PASTOR) DANA. Educated in the public schools. He is an insurance agent, builder, a member of the firm of S. J. & H. W. Dana, shingle manufacturers. Mr. [S. J.] DANA enlisted in Company B, Thirteenth Regiment Vermont Volunteers, September 1862, and was mustered into service in October 1862. He was wounded by a shell in the left arm at the battle of Gettysburg, 03 July 1863, and mustered out 21 July 1863, at the expiration of his term of service. S. J. DANA was one of six brothers who served in the civil war, all of whom came out with honorable discharges. In 1853 Mr. [S. J.] DANA married [his first wife] Adeline W. BENTON [a maiden name?], who died in 1886. They had seven children: Plina J., Clarence W., Frea A., Harry C., Henry W., Winfield R., and Charles H. (deceased). In 1888 Mr. [S. J.] DANA married [Miss?] Miranda DAVIS [his second wife], who died in 1889. In 1894 S. J. DANA married [his third wife] Mary J. FISHER [a maiden name?], who died in 1909. In 1910 Mr. [S. J.] DANA married [Miss?] Hattie RICHARDSON [his fourth wife] of Warren. Republican; was town clerk for twenty-seven years, and justice of the peace for thirty years; has been selectman, town treasurer, lister, school director, town grand juror, and overseer of the poor; is now health officer; served as assistant judge of Washington County court for two years, and represented Fayston in the Vermont Legislature 1872.
